Yes—if your PC has a GTX 1660 or Radeon RX 5500 XT-class graphics card, 12 GB of RAM, and a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600-class processor, it meets the current minimum specification for Subnautica 2 Early Access. For High or Epic settings experimentation, the practical target is a Core i7-13700 or Ryzen 7 7700X, 16 GB of RAM, and an RTX 3070 or Radeon RX 6700 XT-class GPU. The game is still in development, so both performance and requirements can change.
The fastest first adjustment is to move five options from Epic to High: global illumination, shadows, view distance, shading, and effects. Then use TSR on AMD or Intel graphics, DLSS where supported on Nvidia hardware, and lower resolution or upscaling quality only if frame-time spikes continue.
Official Subnautica 2 PC requirements
The Steam listing gives two hardware tiers. These are the current requirements for the Early Access release, not a permanent specification for the finished game.

The minimum and recommended entries are not promises of a particular frame rate. They define the hardware classes the developer currently lists for running the game and for a stronger experience, respectively. A laptop or desktop with a similar part number can perform differently because of cooling, power limits, driver versions, background applications, and the resolution you choose.

What the minimum tier means
The minimum GPU class is a 6 GB GTX 1660 or 6 GB RX 5500 XT. The processor tier is represented by the six-core-era Core i5-8400 and Ryzen 5 2600, and the memory requirement is 12 GB. This is the baseline to check before buying or installing; it is not the tier to assume will hold High or Epic settings at every resolution.
What the recommended tier means
The recommended list moves to a modern Core i7-13700 or Ryzen 7 7700X, 16 GB of RAM, and an 8 GB RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT. Unknown Worlds positions this tier as the starting point for more ambitious quality settings, but Early Access updates can alter the balance between visual options and frame rate.
How to check whether your PC qualifies
- Open Windows Settings > System > About and record the processor model and installed RAM.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display to confirm your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate. Your target resolution matters as much as the component names.
- Identify the graphics card in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display > Display adapter properties, or in Device Manager under Display adapters. Record its exact model and dedicated video-memory figure.
- Compare the processor, RAM, and GPU with the official rows above. A machine that falls below any listed minimum should be treated as unsupported rather than “nearly recommended.”
- Check free capacity in File Explorer > This PC. Keep at least the listed 50 GB available for the game itself; Windows and updates also need working space, so avoid filling the drive to its limit.
- Confirm that Windows is 64-bit by selecting Settings > System > About > System type. DirectX 12 support is required.
For comparisons between two otherwise similar computers, prioritize the GPU’s raster performance and VRAM, then CPU generation and core count, system RAM, your intended resolution, and whether the relevant upscaling features are available. Those axes match the way the published requirements and performance measurements separate the tiers.

Which settings give the clearest FPS gains?
PC Gamer’s May 14, 2026 testing found that the most useful first compromise was changing five options from Epic to High:
| Option | First change | Why it belongs in the first pass |
|---|---|---|
| Global illumination | Epic → High | It is one of the five options the test identified for an initial performance reduction. |
| Shadows | Epic → High | It is included in the same first-pass group. |
| View distance | Epic → High | Reducing it one step is part of the tested tuning recipe. |
| Shading | Epic → High | Move it down one preset level before cutting textures or resolution. |
| Effects | Epic → High | Use High as the first lower setting rather than immediately choosing Low. |
This approach preserves more image detail than dropping every option at once. Change one group, reload the same save or repeat the same route, and observe whether the particular problem—low average FPS, hitching, or inconsistent frame times—improves. The names and available levels can change as the Early Access build changes.
Textures and resolution are later levers
The practical tuning order is to lower the five options above before reducing textures or output resolution. If those changes do not provide a stable result, reduce resolution or upscaling quality in small steps. A resolution change affects the entire image, so it is a more visible compromise than moving one lighting or effects setting from Epic to High.

Upscaling choices: TSR, DLSS and changing support
PC Gamer reported that its tested build had no FSR support. On AMD and Intel hardware, the broad fallback in that build was TSR quality upscaling. Nvidia users could enable DLSS Frame Generation where the game and GPU exposed the option.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that an option missing from one build will remain missing. Early Access patches can add, remove, or rename upscaling modes. If FSR, DLSS, or another mode appears in your installation, test it at the quality setting that keeps text and distant geometry readable before moving to a more aggressive performance mode.

| GPU and resolution | Average FPS | 1% low FPS |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB at 1080p | 89 | 51 |
| RTX 5080 at 1080p | 132 | 75 |
| RTX 5060 Ti at 1440p | 76 | 46 |
| RTX 5080 at 1440p | 107 | 67 |
Average FPS describes the overall throughput during that test. The 1% low figure is a warning about the slower portions of the run: a large gap between average and 1% low can feel like hitching even when the headline average looks high. Your own result can differ because the test used specified hardware, a particular Early Access build, quality upscaling, a particular scene path, and its own settings.
Notice the resolution effect in the same test: the RTX 5060 Ti result fell from 89 average FPS at 1080p to 76 at 1440p, while its 1% low moved from 51 to 46. The RTX 5080 moved from 132 to 107 average FPS and from 75 to 67 at those resolutions. That is why a PC that feels comfortable at 1080p should not automatically be expected to deliver the same experience at 1440p.
A step-by-step setup for a smooth first run
- Install the game on a drive with room to spare. The listing requires 50 GB available storage. Leave additional free space for the operating system and future Early Access patches.
- Start from the recommended tier if your hardware meets it. Use High or Epic as an experiment rather than assuming Epic is the correct default for every scene.
- Set your native output resolution first. Begin at 1080p or 1440p according to your monitor and note the frame rate before making several changes at once.
- Move global illumination, shadows, view distance, shading, and effects from Epic to High. These are the five settings identified in the May 14, 2026 test as the clearest first reductions.
- Choose an upscaler appropriate to your hardware. Select TSR quality on AMD or Intel hardware in the tested-build configuration. On Nvidia hardware, use DLSS features when your build exposes them.
- Repeat a consistent scene test. Use the same save, location, camera direction, and movement route after each change. Avoid judging a setting from two unrelated areas.
- Address persistent frame-time spikes. Lower output resolution or upscaling quality one step, then test again. If your monitor cannot display the measured peak frame rate consistently, cap FPS to a stable value it can sustain.
- Record the result. Note the resolution, upscaler, five quality settings, average FPS, and whether traversal still hitches. This makes it possible to restore a known-good profile after a patch.
- Recheck after updates. Unknown Worlds says further optimizations will arrive during development, so a setting that was necessary in one build may no longer be the best compromise later.
Choosing between PCs by use case
Existing PC near the minimum
If your computer has a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT with 12 GB of RAM and a Core i5-8400 or Ryzen 5 2600-class CPU, begin with conservative quality settings and the game’s available upscaler. The official listing establishes compatibility at this tier, but it does not promise a specific FPS target. Expect to tune the five high-impact options before considering higher presets.

PC built around the recommended tier
An RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT with 16 GB of RAM and a Core i7-13700 or Ryzen 7 7700X matches the listed recommended class. This is the sensible starting point for testing High and then selectively trying Epic. Resolution remains decisive: 1440p creates a heavier workload than 1080p, so use the tuning order rather than treating the recommended list as a fixed frame-rate guarantee.
Comparing Nvidia, AMD and Intel options
Compare the actual GPU class and VRAM first, not just the brand. The published minimum uses 6 GB cards, while the recommended examples use 8 GB cards. Then compare CPU generation and core count, total system RAM, and your chosen resolution. Finally, check which upscaling options your current game build and GPU expose: the tested build offered TSR as the broad fallback and DLSS Frame Generation on Nvidia hardware, while PC Gamer reported no FSR support in that build.
Troubleshooting common performance problems
Low FPS immediately after starting
- Verify that the game is using the intended discrete GPU rather than an integrated adapter.
- Apply the five Epic-to-High changes before lowering every setting.
- Enable the supported quality upscaler for your GPU family.
- Test at 1080p if you were starting at 1440p, then decide whether the visual difference is worth the performance cost.
Good average FPS but visible hitching
- Watch the 1% low or frame-time behavior rather than average FPS alone.
- Repeat the same route after changing one setting group, especially view distance, effects, or shading.
- Reduce upscaling quality or resolution only after the five first-pass options have been tested.
- Cap FPS to a value your monitor can sustain instead of allowing large swings between peaks and dips.
An expected graphics option is missing
Check the exact Early Access build and your GPU. PC Gamer’s tested build had no FSR support, and options may change with patches. Use TSR where available on AMD or Intel hardware, and use DLSS features where the Nvidia path is exposed.
Performance changes after a patch
Reapply the recorded profile, then test the same scene again. Unknown Worlds expects development to continue for about two to three years based on its previous Early Access games, and it specifically says further optimizations will arrive during development. Requirements and frame rates should therefore be treated as version-sensitive.
Early Access limitations to keep in mind
Steam warns that players may encounter bugs, in-development features, and performance issues. The store description also says the developer expects Early Access to take about two to three years, based on its previous Early Access games. These statements explain why the current requirement table and third-party benchmarks are snapshots rather than final hardware guarantees.
Unknown Worlds’ January 5, 2026 system-requirements note says: “Further optimizations will come over the course of development, so we’ll update this as things change to ensure you continue to enjoy the best possible experience with Subnautica 2.” Keep that qualification beside any purchase or upgrade decision. Meeting the minimum tier answers whether your PC is within the listed baseline; it does not settle the frame-rate question for every future build.
