Choose the Stylophone Mini Original if the smallest possible instrument, an attached stylus, a built-in speaker and batteries in the box matter most. Choose the Stylophone S-1 if you need a clearly documented three-octave range, a volume control, octave switching, or standard 3.5 mm audio connections.

There is an important naming trap: the manufacturer calls its larger original pocket synthesizer the Stylophone S-1, while Mini Original is also the name of a Mini color variant. This comparison uses “S-1” for the larger model so you can identify the correct product when shopping.

Mini Original and S-1: the decision in one minute

The two instruments share the basic Stylophone concept: you play a metal keyboard with a stylus, and each has a built-in speaker. Their practical priorities are different.

  • Pick Mini Original for keychain-sized portability, the attached stylus, a speaker for immediate play, and two LR44 batteries supplied with the instrument.
  • Pick S-1 for a larger body, three octaves, a three-way octave control, a dedicated volume control, 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out, and an optional headphone connection.
  • Do not assume “Original” means the S-1. “Mini Original” identifies a Mini version; “S-1” is the manufacturer’s name for the larger pocket synthesizer.
  • Neither model has an independently established sound, durability or battery-life advantage in the available product information. The recommendations here follow the manufacturer’s listed design and specifications rather than hands-on testing.

The manufacturer’s displayed 2026 search-result prices were £19.95 for Mini Original and £29.95 for S-1. Treat those as time-sensitive manufacturer figures, not guaranteed checkout totals; tax, shipping, regional stock and later price changes can alter what you pay.

What is the naming difference?

“Mini Original” is a Mini variant

The Mini product page uses “Mini Original” for a color variant of the small instrument. It is not the name of the larger model. The Mini is described as a playable keychain instrument and is presented as a compact modern product inspired by the first Stylophone.

“S-1” is the larger pocket synthesizer

The manufacturer identifies the larger pocket synthesizer as the Stylophone S-1. When a listing says “original Stylophone” without a model number, check the dimensions, controls and connections. An S-1 should match the 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm specification and the three-octave control layout; a Mini listing should describe the much smaller 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm unit.

Side-by-side specifications

Decision point Stylophone Mini Original Stylophone S-1
Manufacturer positioning Playable keychain instrument Original-style pocket synthesizer identified as S-1
Stated dimensions 10.4 cm long × 7.9 cm wide × 2.3 cm high 18 cm wide × 12 cm high × 4.5 cm deep
Playing range Octave count is not stated on the cited Mini product page Three octaves
Controls listed Power and vibrato Power, volume, vibrato and three-way octave control
Playing method Stylus over the keyboard Stylus over the keyboard
Built-in sound Built-in speaker Built-in speaker
Audio connections No external audio connection is listed on the cited Mini page 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out; optional headphone jack listed
Batteries Two LR44 button cells included Three AA batteries required; not included
Displayed manufacturer price £19.95 in a 2026 search result; verify current price £29.95 in a 2026 search result; verify current price

“Not stated” in the Mini range row means the product page does not publish an octave count; it does not prove that the Mini has no octave options. Likewise, the lack of a listed Mini connection should not be read as proof that no version has one without checking the exact regional product listing.

Portability: how much smaller is the Mini?

Portability is the Mini’s clearest advantage. Its stated 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm body is substantially smaller in every listed dimension than the S-1’s 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm body. The manufacturer’s “playable keychain instrument” description also signals a different carry scenario: the Mini is intended to be attached to or carried with everyday items, while the S-1 is still portable but occupies more room in a pocket or bag.

Choose Mini for constant carry

The Mini makes sense when the instrument needs to be present rather than stored in a case. Its attached stylus means there is no separate pen-like accessory to lose, and its built-in speaker allows immediate play without another device. The small body can be useful for short musical ideas, novelty playing and travel where every centimetre matters.

Choose S-1 when portability still needs usable range

The S-1 remains a pocket instrument, but its larger footprint gives you the documented three-octave range and additional controls. If you are willing to carry a device measuring 18 cm wide, 12 cm high and 4.5 cm deep, you get more explicit control over octave selection and volume than the Mini page documents.

Stylophone GENX-2 Portable Analogue Synthesizer with Built-in Speaker, LFO, Filter, Analogue Delay and CV/Gate Output | Synthesizer Keyboard | Synth Musical Instrument
  • CREATE ANYWHERE, ANYTIME - Unleash your creativity the moment inspiration strikes. The GENX-2 is fully portable with battery operation and a built-in speaker, making it the perfect musical instrument. The dedicated headphone and audio outputs give you the flexibility to play your way.
  • SCULPT YOUR SIGNATURE SOUND - Don't just play presets, design unique tones from scratch. The flexible LFO with square and triangle waves, a resonant low-pass filter, an attack/decay envelope, and new Pulse Width Modulation controls give you the power to craft everything from gritty, punchy basslines to soaring, expressive leads.
  • SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY - Connect to external music production equipment with ease. Not only can the GENX-2 be played with a full-size keyboard or sequenced from your DAW, but it can also become the brain of your hardware rig. Use its feature-packed CV and Gate outputs to control your modular and semi-modular equipment directly.
  • ENRICH YOUR SOUND - Give your sounds incredible weight and retro character. The new dual sub-octave switches add two layers of earth-shaking bass for truly massive tones, while the built-in analogue delay provides everything from subtle slapback echo to sprawling, atmospheric soundscapes for a richer, fuller sound.
  • ENHANCED PLAYABILITY - Go beyond static notes and add real human feeling to your music. The iconic stylus-powered keyboard is now paired with a multi-function, finger-sensitive expression strip. Effortlessly bend the pitch, modulate the LFO, or perform dramatic filter sweeps for a truly dynamic and lively performance.

Neither specification establishes weight, case protection or long-term mechanical durability. Do not infer those characteristics from dimensions alone.

Range and controls: what can you actually adjust?

Mini Original controls

The Mini page lists power and vibrato controls. Vibrato adds a periodic pitch variation to the sound, but the manufacturer does not publish a measured depth, speed range or independent comparison for it. The same page does not state an octave count or list an octave selector. That makes the Mini’s documented control set intentionally simple: switch it on, use the stylus on the keyboard and engage vibrato when desired.

S-1 controls

The S-1 page documents three octaves, a three-way octave control, power, volume and vibrato. The octave control is the important distinction for players who need to move the keyboard’s working range rather than stay within an unspecified Mini range. A dedicated volume control also lets you adjust the built-in output directly from the instrument; the Mini page lists no volume control.

Why the missing Mini octave count matters

A specification omission is not the same as a performance limitation. It means you should not buy the Mini expecting a particular number of octaves unless the exact retailer or manual for your version confirms it. If your music requires a known range, the S-1 is the safer choice because “three octaves” is explicitly documented by the manufacturer.

Audio connections and private listening

S-1 connections

The S-1 is the only model in this comparison with manufacturer-documented external audio connections. Its listed 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out can connect it to compatible audio equipment, while an optional headphone jack is also listed. Those connections make the S-1 the practical choice when you want to integrate it with another device or monitor without relying solely on its speaker.

Mini connection information

The cited Mini product page lists a built-in speaker but does not list an external audio input, output or headphone jack. That means the available specification does not establish a cable-based connection path for Mini Original. If silent practice or routing audio to another device is essential, choose the S-1 unless the current Mini documentation for your exact edition explicitly confirms otherwise.

Stylophone Pink - The Original Pocket Electronic Synthesizer - Special Edition | Synth Musical Instrument | Synthesizer Keyboard | Stylophone Instrument
  • Miniature stylus operated synthesizer is a recreation of the 1967 classic.
  • 3 Octaves. Optional vibrato effect.
  • Tuning knob on bottom allows you tune the Stylophone or do pitch-bend effects.
  • Built in speaker with volume control, Optional headphone jack.
  • Line Out (3.5mm).

The specifications do not state connector wiring beyond the S-1’s “3.5 mm stereo” descriptions, nor do they provide measured output levels or compatibility tests. Use equipment with matching 3.5 mm connections and follow the relevant device manuals.

Speakers, styluses and included parts

Both models include a stylus and a built-in speaker, so neither requires an external speaker for basic play. On the Mini, the stylus is attached. The Mini box contents are listed as the Mini unit, attached stylus and a tin. The S-1 page confirms that a stylus is included and that the instrument has a built-in speaker, but the cited specification does not provide an equivalent full box-content list.

The Mini also lists a white LED, automatic switch-off, a nickel-plated keyboard and a vibrato button. These are product features, not evidence of longer battery life or greater durability. The S-1 specification emphasizes its range, controls and audio connections instead.

Batteries and readiness out of the box

Mini Original: two LR44 cells included

Mini Original uses two LR44 button cells, and the manufacturer lists them as included. That gives the Mini an immediate out-of-box advantage if you want to start playing without buying a separate battery pack. LR44 cells are small, so store replacement cells safely and follow the product’s battery instructions.

S-1: three AA batteries, not included

The S-1 has three AA battery slots, but batteries are not included. Add three compatible AA batteries to your purchase list before planning to play. The available specification does not state runtime, whether rechargeable AAs are recommended, or how battery life compares with the Mini, so no reliable duration claim can be made.

Battery type is a practical difference, not a sound-quality measure. The Mini’s LR44 cells reduce initial setup shopping; the S-1’s AA format is larger and commonly stocked, but you must supply the batteries yourself.

Which model fits your use case?

For a keychain or travel instrument

Choose Mini Original. Its smaller stated dimensions, attached stylus and built-in speaker align directly with a carry-everywhere role. The included LR44 batteries also reduce preparation before a trip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a known musical range

Choose S-1. Its three-octave specification and three-way octave control give you a defined range-selection feature that the Mini page does not document.

For volume adjustment on the instrument

Choose S-1. Volume is explicitly listed among its controls; the Mini page lists power and vibrato but no volume control.

For headphones or connected audio equipment

Choose S-1. It is the model with listed 3.5 mm stereo line-in, line-out and an optional headphone jack. The Mini page does not list external audio connections.

For the lowest displayed manufacturer price

Choose Mini Original if the price remains the deciding factor. The manufacturer’s 2026 search-result figures put it at £19.95 versus £29.95 for S-1, a £10 difference at that time. Verify the current product page, country, tax and shipping before treating that gap as your final cost.

For a beginner who wants the simplest specification

Mini Original has fewer listed controls and a smaller body, which may make it less intimidating to carry and operate. That is a design-based inference, not an independently tested claim that it is easier to play. The S-1 may be preferable if the player will quickly need volume, octave selection or headphones.

How to choose without confusing the listings

  1. Confirm the model name. Look for “Mini Original” or “S-1,” not only “Original Stylophone.”
  2. Match the dimensions. Mini listings should identify approximately 10.4 × 7.9 × 2.3 cm; S-1 listings should identify approximately 18 × 12 × 4.5 cm.
  3. Check the controls. Three octaves, a three-way octave control and volume indicate S-1. Power and vibrato alone match the controls listed for Mini.
  4. Check the audio panel. 3.5 mm stereo line-in and line-out and an optional headphone jack are S-1 features in the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. Check the battery line. Mini includes two LR44 cells; S-1 needs three AA batteries that you must provide.
  6. Check the box contents and color. Mini Original’s listed box includes the unit, attached stylus and tin. A color name can identify a Mini variant, so do not use “Original” by itself to identify the S-1.
  7. Verify price and availability at checkout. The cited manufacturer figures are from a 2026 search result and can change; they do not establish local stock, tax or shipping.

What the manufacturer says about the Stylophone

The manufacturer describes the Stylophone as “a small electronic synthesizer that makes creating music simple and fun.” Its homepage says the instrument was inspired by the first Stylophone introduced in 1968. It also displays “Making Music for 58 Years” and “Millions Sold.” These are manufacturer statements and promotional wording; the page does not provide an independently sourced, dated sales figure behind “Millions Sold.”

The Mini page similarly says it is “more than just a collectible keychain” while identifying the 1968 instrument as its inspiration. That language explains the product’s heritage and positioning, but it is not an independent historical sales record or a comparative test of the Mini and S-1.

What is not established by these specifications

The listed product information is enough to compare size, controls, connections, batteries and displayed price. It does not establish several questions buyers may reasonably have:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which model sounds better in a listening comparison.
  • Which speaker is louder or clearer.
  • How long either battery set lasts in normal use.
  • Which instrument is more durable over time.
  • Whether one is easier or more comfortable to play for a particular age group or hand size.
  • Whether a current retailer has stock in your country.

Marketing descriptions such as “unique analogue sound” should therefore be treated as product positioning, not as a controlled sound-quality result. If one of those factors determines your purchase, look for model-specific documentation or an independent test rather than assuming the smaller or larger body settles it.

Final recommendation

Buy Stylophone Mini Original when your priority is the smallest carry size, an attached stylus, built-in speaker and included batteries. Buy Stylophone S-1 when you need the more fully documented playing system: three octaves, three-way octave selection, volume control and 3.5 mm audio connections with an optional headphone jack. Confirm the model name and current regional price before ordering, because “Mini Original” and “original Stylophone” can describe different products and the displayed prices are time-sensitive.
