StudyLens is a local-AI learning prototype that analyzes a student’s answer, estimates which software-engineering concepts may be weak, and can serve another question on the same concept. Its project author, Samreena Yousaf, describes it as a way to target practice—not a reliable mind-reading system or a proven way to improve learning.
What StudyLens does
Yousaf built StudyLens for a friend studying Software Engineering, starting with the question: “What could I build that would actually help one person I know?” The project turns an answer into evidence for what to practice next. Its learner-facing loop is: “What did I misunderstand? → What should I practice next? → Did I improve?” These are the author’s descriptions of the project’s aim, not measured results.
Rather than simply switching to a random topic after an incorrect answer, StudyLens is designed to revisit the concept that appears weak. For example, if an answer about Coupling suggests difficulty with that concept, the system can choose another Coupling question.

- The student answers a question. The application sends the response for analysis.
- A local model analyzes the answer. It returns structured information such as an understanding score, concepts detected, possible misconceptions, and supporting evidence.
- Backend rules update the estimate. The application uses deterministic logic to update concept-level mastery and decide whether a retest is appropriate. The model interprets the answer; it does not control those decisions.
- The system may target a follow-up question. When the evidence points to a weakness, the intended behavior is to ask another question about that same concept.
- A new answer supplies more evidence. The process can update the estimate again after the student responds.
The author gives this example calculation for a mastery update: new mastery = previous mastery × 0.70 + current understanding × 0.30. It is the project’s described weighting, not a validated learning-science formula. A score produced this way should be read as an application estimate based on answer evidence, not as a definitive measure of what a learner knows.

What it is built with
The project uses Gemma 3:1B through Ollama for local answer analysis, Python and FastAPI for the backend, SQLite with SQLAlchemy for learning data, and React with Vite for the frontend. The split between model analysis and backend rules is consequential: generated feedback can suggest concepts or misconceptions, while application logic filters evidence and controls mastery updates and retest choices.
What local processing means—and what it does not
Yousaf says the intended setup analyzes answers locally on the learner’s machine and avoids a paid AI API. The author also reports that CPU inference on their laptop was noticeably slower than a typical hosted API. No laptop model or minimum system requirements are given, so the account does not establish what hardware another user needs or how fast it will run.

The local-analysis description applies to this project’s intended setup, not every possible installation or deployment. It is not a blanket privacy guarantee for integrations, backups, or hosted deployments. Anyone evaluating a particular setup should check where its answers and related data are processed and stored.
What has been tested, and what remains unproven
In a DEV Community article published October 5, 2026, Yousaf reports 52 automated backend tests passing with zero failures, alongside testing with real local Gemma inference and manual browser use. The reported test areas include Agile, Scrum, Waterfall, Coupling, functional and non-functional requirements, misconception extraction, concept filtering, mastery updates, retest decisions, same-concept question selection, duplicate-submission protection, and API behavior. This is an author-reported project test result, not independent validation.

Those checks show that the author exercised a range of application behaviors; they do not demonstrate learning gains or prove that the mastery estimates accurately reflect understanding. The project is described as a prototype with a relatively small Software Engineering question set. Its 1B model may over-include misconception descriptions, which the application attempts to constrain through deterministic validation and filtering. The author explicitly characterizes its output as an estimate of concept-level weaknesses from answer evidence.

StudyLens is most useful as an example of a practice-targeting design: use answer evidence to select a relevant follow-up instead of treating every wrong answer as a cue to move on. Readers assessing a learning tool with a similar approach can look at whether inference is local or hosted, how answer evidence becomes concept-level feedback, whether follow-up questions target the same concept, how broad the question bank is, and how quickly analysis runs. The project article does not compare StudyLens with other learning products.
