The best headphones for music production depend on the job: closed-back models help keep sound out of vocal microphones and isolate you from room noise, while open-back models suit mixing in a quiet space but leak sound. MusicRadar’s 2026 guide, updated 10 June, tested 15 pairs and selected five options for different studio roles. Its category labels are reviewer judgments, not a universal ranking.

Which studio headphones fit each production job?

These picks come from MusicRadar’s reviewed 2026 shortlist. The impedance and weight figures below are specifications reproduced by that guide, not independent measurements.

Headphones Best fit in MusicRadar’s guide Design, impedance and weight What to consider
Sennheiser HD 490 Pro Overall mixing and mastering Open-back; 130 ohms; 260 g Reviewer praised its balance, comfort and detail in complex mixes. Open-back leakage makes it a poor default for recording beside a live microphone.
Sony MDR-7506 Budget workhorse Closed-back; 63 ohms; 229 g Reviewer noted a strong midrange and emphasized highs, so learn its sound and cross-check decisions. Fixed coiled cable and limited headband cushioning are trade-offs.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50x Beginner-friendly all-rounder Closed-back; 38 ohms; 285 g Reviewer considers it usable for mixing if you account for its low and high end. The manufacturer lists 45 mm drivers, isolation pads, swiveling earcups, three interchangeable cables, a pouch and a screw-on 1/4-inch adapter.
HEDD HEDDphone Two Premium mastering-oriented option Open-back; 41 ohms; 495 g MusicRadar’s reviewer describes balanced sound and listening comfort. Its weight, cost and leakage are practical compromises.
beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro X Closed-back tracking and monitoring Closed-back; 48 ohms; 350 g MusicRadar recommends it for tracking instruments and vocals, citing isolation and balance. Do not confuse the Pro X’s 48-ohm specification with the classic DT 770 PRO, which is sold in impedance variants.

MusicRadar’s category picks and listening impressions reflect its reviewers’ assessment. They should help narrow a shortlist, not be read as a guarantee that one model will suit every listener or studio.

How should you choose between open-back and closed-back?

For recording with a microphone, prioritize isolation

Closed-back headphones reduce sound escaping toward an open microphone and help block some outside noise. That makes the ATH-M50x and DT 770 Pro X more practical starting points for vocal or instrument tracking than the open-back HD 490 Pro or HEDDphone Two. Isolation is not absolute, so keep monitoring levels sensible when recording.

For mixing in a quiet room, consider open-back

Open-back designs are commonly chosen for a more spacious presentation, which can be useful when judging a mix. They let sound in and out, however, so they are less suitable when a nearby microphone must not pick up the backing track. The HD 490 Pro and HEDDphone Two are the open-back choices in this shortlist.

Will your phone, computer or interface drive them?

Impedance is a useful compatibility clue, but it does not by itself establish how loud or clean a headphone will sound from a particular output. MusicRadar’s general guidance treats models below 100 ohms as lower impedance and more likely to suit phones, laptops and modest interface outputs; higher-impedance models are more likely to benefit from a capable interface or headphone amplifier. All five listed models are below 100 ohms, but check the output specifications of your actual device and whether it drives the headphones adequately at your working level.

How much do tonal balance and familiarity matter?

Headphones can lead you to make mix decisions that do not translate well if you do not know how their sound compares with familiar speakers or playback devices. MusicRadar cautions that the MDR-7506 is not flat overall and describes the ATH-M50x as requiring care with low and high frequencies. Spend time listening to well-known material, then check your mixes on speakers and other familiar playback systems. No headphone alone guarantees an accurate translation.

What should you check for comfort and day-to-day use?

A pair that sounds promising can still become uncomfortable during long sessions. Try to assess how the headband and earcups fit, how firmly they clamp, whether the cable gets in the way, and whether replacement parts are available. Weight provides a comparison point—especially for the 495 g HEDDphone Two—but does not predict fit or comfort for every person. MusicRadar also flags the cable and headband trade-offs on the MDR-7506 and the case size of the HD 490 Pro Plus; that case note applies to the Plus package, not necessarily every HD 490 Pro bundle.

For the ATH-M50x, Audio-Technica’s product page specifies three interchangeable cables and a screw-on adapter in the listed package. Check the exact model and package in your region before assuming accessories are included. For any model, verify replacement-pad and cable compatibility before ordering parts.

What are good headphones to get for studio recording and mixing?

If recording is the priority, start with closed-back options such as the ATH-M50x, MDR-7506 or DT 770 Pro X, then decide based on fit, sound and source compatibility. For quiet-room mixing, compare the open-back HD 490 Pro with the closed-back alternatives; choose the HEDDphone Two only if its weight and cost suit your setup. The product roles are a practical starting point, not a substitute for listening before buying.
