SafeWalkr, a pedestrian-focused route-mapping program created by three Northern Virginia high school students, is being piloted with families near 14 Fairfax County public schools. The students designed it to help people find safe walking routes to school, including which streets have sidewalks and which side of the road to walk on. Fairfax County Public Schools’ Safe Routes to School team collaborated with them to refine the program for local families. The pilot is underway; broader adoption has not been confirmed.

Why students built SafeWalkr

Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology seniors Daniil Prokofev, Isaac Leetyn and Ashwath Muppa started SafeWalkr after a run home from school exposed a gap in ordinary route planning. Prokofev’s roughly eight-mile route, recommended by Google Maps, took him onto a busy road without sidewalks.

The students began the project at their school’s 24-hour hackathon in March and spent seven months refining it. They used Python, JavaScript and C++ to build an algorithm that considers both safety and speed. The goal is not to replace general-purpose navigation: Prokofev described the effort as, “We are not re-creating Google Maps,” adding, “We’re trying to push the bounds of what kind of mapping software exists.”

What SafeWalkr is reported to do

According to the students and The Washington Post’s October 12, 2026 report, SafeWalkr draws on Fairfax County records, Google Maps imagery and street databases. Its reported mapping features include crosswalks, traffic volumes and sidewalk coverage. It can show which streets have sidewalks and recommend which side of a road to walk on.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Those details describe the program’s reported inputs and features, not a published technical audit. The available reporting does not explain how often its data are updated, how the algorithm weighs each factor, or how it handles missing or conflicting sidewalk and crossing information. Families should treat a suggested route as planning information rather than a guarantee that every segment is safe or accessible.

Who is in the pilot

The pilot launched in the week before the October 12, 2026 report and serves hundreds of families who live within walking distance of 14 Fairfax County public schools. Fairfax County Public Schools’ Safe Routes to School staff had been working on static safe-route maps and collaborated with the students to refine SafeWalkr for county families.

The student creators attend Thomas Jefferson, a magnet school, and live too far away to walk there themselves. Their work addresses a local need beyond their own commute: families need route information that accounts for the experience of walking, not just the fastest path between two points.

What comes next—and what remains uncertain

Prokofev said the students hope to expand SafeWalkr to all 200 Fairfax County schools and then to other counties, depending on how the pilot goes. That is an aspiration, not a published rollout schedule or a commitment by the school system. The pilot’s eventual results will matter to any decision about expansion.

The report does not provide a public URL for the program, pricing, licensing terms, privacy policy or open-source status. It also reports no independent route-accuracy study, crash evaluation or user-outcome data. As a result, there is not yet evidence in the available reporting that SafeWalkr prevents crashes, improves safety outcomes or performs better than other route planners.

Why pedestrian-focused school routes matter

The national context helps explain the problem SafeWalkr is trying to address, but it does not demonstrate that the program works. Smart Growth America’s 2026 Dangerous by Design report says 7,080 people were struck and killed while walking in the United States in 2024—more than 19 a day. The report says that total was 72% higher than in 2009. Heidi Simon, a co-author of the report, told The Washington Post, “The country is still very much in a pedestrian safety crisis, and we are not doing enough to get ourselves out of it.” She also said, “When you are designing a road for speed, you are not designing a road for safety.”

Distance is a major factor in whether children walk to school. The Federal Highway Administration’s brief on the 2017 National Household Travel Survey, published in March 2019, reports that 10.4% of U.S. children ages 5–17 usually walked or biked to school; 54.2% were usually driven in a private vehicle, and 33.2% took a school bus. Among children who lived within a quarter mile of school, 80.9% usually walked. Among those living at least two miles away, fewer than 1% did.

The Washington Post also cites a National Center for Safe Routes to School figure that about 48% of U.S. K–8 students usually walked or biked to school in 1969. That historical figure and the 2017 federal survey use different populations and sources, so they should not be treated as a precise like-for-like measure of change.

What to look for when evaluating a walking route planner

SafeWalkr’s reported features point to practical questions families and school systems can ask about any pedestrian route tool:

  • Sidewalk continuity: Does the route account for whether sidewalks continue along the full street segment, rather than simply noting that a street has one?
  • Crossings and traffic: Does it show marked crossings and account for traffic exposure?
  • Road-side guidance: Does it indicate which side of the road to use where that matters?
  • Safety and time: Does the routing explain how it balances a safer path against a shorter or faster one?
  • Data quality: Are the underlying sources and update dates clear, and can users report errors?
  • Evidence: Has the tool published route-accuracy findings or evaluations of safety outcomes?

For SafeWalkr, the reporting describes several relevant features, but does not provide the update schedule or independent performance evidence needed to answer all of those questions. The project’s pilot is an opportunity to learn how the program works for local families; its existence alone is not proof of safer outcomes.
