If Stripe says a webhook is failing, check the endpoint’s delivery attempts in the Dashboard before assuming a payment failed. Stripe retries unsuccessful deliveries, but an endpoint that remains unresponsive or returns errors for several days can have delivery attempts stopped and be disabled. In the incident behind this headline, the writer reports finding Stripe’s email 17 days later; Stripe’s documentation does not establish that it normally waits 17 days to send such an email.
Why did Stripe say my webhook was broken?
A webhook is a configured endpoint that receives notifications about selected events in a Stripe account. A failed webhook delivery means Stripe could not successfully deliver an event to that endpoint; it does not, by itself, establish that a payment failed. Payment completion and the application’s follow-up work are separate: check the payment or event in Stripe, then check whether your system received and processed the notification. Stripe’s Webhook Endpoints reference describes configured endpoints, while Stripe Support explains why it retries webhook delivery.
Stripe says it automatically retries failed deliveries. If an endpoint stays unresponsive or returns errors for several days, Stripe can stop delivery attempts and disable the endpoint in the webhook configuration. The available guidance does not specify a precise retry schedule, and the email described in this incident does not prove which failure occurred or when Stripe sent its notice.
How do I see failed Stripe webhook deliveries?
- Open the Stripe Dashboard and go to Webhooks.
- Select the affected endpoint and open its Failed view.
- Choose a failed event, then expand its delivery attempt.
- Inspect the HTTP status and response. Use those details to distinguish a timeout from an application error or other unsuccessful response, then check the endpoint’s logs for the same request and time.

Can Stripe disable a webhook endpoint?
Yes. Stripe documents that it can disable an endpoint in the webhook configuration after it has remained unresponsive or returned errors for several days and delivery attempts have stopped. The source does not promise a universal number of days or a fixed retry ladder, so do not treat the reported 17-day gap as Stripe’s standard notification timing.
After resolving the endpoint problem, inspect its current status and failed events in the Dashboard. Do not assume that re-enabling an endpoint, by itself, replays every event that was not delivered; verify what Stripe currently offers for each event and reconcile missing work separately.

How do I fix timeout-related webhook failures?
Stripe expects a webhook server to acknowledge receipt promptly with an HTTP status in the 200–299 range. Its support guidance says: “Stripe expects your server to promptly respond with an HTTP status code in the 200-299 range to indicate that the Event was successfully received.” — Stripe Support, “Webhooks: how to investigate and fix ‘Timed out’”.
If the handler is doing slow work before responding, separate receipt from processing: validate and record the event, return a 2xx promptly, and perform longer tasks afterward—for example, by placing the event on an internal queue. This reduces timeout risk, but the application still needs to process and reconcile queued work correctly. Stripe’s timeout guidance explains this approach.

How do I recover events after a webhook failure?
Investigate promptly because event visibility depends on both the age of the event and where you look. Stripe’s support page says events within the last 30 days are fully visible through the API and Dashboard. Its Dashboard history extends to 13 months in live mode and 90 days in test mode, but events older than 30 days appear only in summary view. These are Stripe-published windows; the accessed support page does not state a publication year. Stripe’s event-retention guidance provides the details.
The Events API reference separately says individual events can be retrieved for 30 days. That is an event-retrieval window, not a guarantee that a failed delivery can be replayed or that an older event will be available in full. Check the event and its delivery options in the Dashboard, then compare Stripe’s record with your application’s logs and business records. If downstream work is missing, use the event data and your own records to determine what must be reconciled; avoid blindly repeating an operation that may already have completed. What to do when you discover the email late
- Open the affected endpoint’s Failed view and inspect the event attempts and responses.
- Restore the endpoint’s ability to acknowledge requests promptly, and move long-running work out of the request path.
- Compare affected events with application logs and business records to identify work that was not completed.
- Reconcile missing work carefully, checking whether it may already have occurred before repeating it.
- Review the endpoint’s recent deliveries and arrange an operational check so a new failure is noticed sooner.
The reported 17-day delay is one writer’s experience, not a documented Stripe notification interval. The practical priority is to diagnose the delivery attempts, restore reliable acknowledgements, and account for downstream work while the relevant event details remain accessible.
