Verdict: Mortal Kombat (1995) is the stronger live-action fighting-game adaptation because it preserves the games’ supernatural tournament structure, gives its fights a clear progression and built a larger commercial legacy. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the best animated option, earning an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score as reported by JustWatch in 2026.

Street Fighter (1994) is still the more colorful, deliberately campy watch, largely because of Raul Julia’s M. Bison. Choose it for loud 1990s comic-book excess; choose Mortal Kombat when faithfulness to the game premise matters most.

The short answer: Mortal Kombat for live action, Street Fighter II for animation

These franchises take opposite approaches to adaptation. The 1995 Mortal Kombat film turns the games’ signature premise into its plot: fighters enter a tournament, face increasingly dangerous opponents and are pulled toward Outworld, where the fate of realms is at stake. The 1994 Street Fighter film instead makes Colonel Guile’s military campaign the story engine, placing the game’s fighters inside a fictional war and changing several characters’ relationships and functions.

That difference decides the live-action comparison. Mortal Kombat is not a polished drama, but its world, stakes and match-by-match structure resemble the source game. Street Fighter is less faithful, yet its heightened color, comic timing and flamboyant villain can make it more entertaining for viewers who enjoy intentional camp.

Animation reverses the result. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the critical and home-video standout, while the Mortal Kombat Legends films are enjoyable straight-to-video adventures that have not been as consistently strong.

Why Mortal Kombat works better as a live-action adaptation

It adapts the game’s organizing idea, not just its character names

A fighting game does not arrive with a ready-made film plot. The adaptation has to decide what turns a sequence of playable matches into a story. Mortal Kombat chooses the most direct answer: the tournament itself. The heroes travel toward a competition that determines whether Earthrealm can resist Outworld. Every fight therefore has a narrative function, even when the dialogue and acting are uneven.

This approach also lets the film preserve the series’ supernatural identity. The danger is not merely a military coup or a criminal conspiracy; it involves realms, prophecy and opponents whose abilities exceed ordinary human limits. That otherworldly atmosphere is one reason the film still feels recognizably connected to the games despite its limitations.

The tournament gives the action a readable shape

The film’s confrontations are staged as steps in a journey rather than unrelated set pieces. Viewers can tell who is learning, who is protecting the group and what each victory means for the larger contest. The one-on-one martial-arts emphasis is not technically flawless, but it is easier to follow than a war plot in which many characters pursue separate objectives.

That clarity matters in a game adaptation. Fans are not only looking for familiar costumes or names; they want to understand why fighters are meeting and what a win changes. Mortal Kombat supplies that connective tissue, making its fights feel like adaptations of playable encounters instead of generic action scenes.

Its tone is earnest B-movie fantasy

The 1995 film does not pretend to be prestige fantasy. It embraces techno-driven fan service, exaggerated villains and visual effects that now look dated. The result is an earnest B-movie tone: the filmmakers take the stakes seriously while allowing the material to remain cheesy.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus captures the trade-off, praising an “effective otherwordly atmosphere and appropriately cheesy visuals” while faulting the “poorly constructed plot, laughable dialogue, and subpar acting.” Both halves are important. The weaknesses are real, but the atmosphere and visual language are pointed in the correct direction for this particular game.

The ensemble has a stronger shared identity

Mortal Kombat benefits from putting its fighters on the same mission. Their personalities can clash, cooperate and develop through the tournament. Christopher Lambert’s Raiden is eccentric rather than solemn, but that unusual performance helps the group feel like a team in a strange world.

Street Fighter has a larger and more famous roster on paper, yet the military-war structure separates its characters into plot functions. Several fighters appear as recognizable faces without receiving a role that resembles their game identity. Mortal Kombat makes fewer such concessions in its central premise.

Why Street Fighter remains the more entertaining camp classic for some viewers

Raul Julia gives it a performance people remember

The strongest argument for Street Fighter is Raul Julia’s M. Bison. He plays the villain with theatrical confidence, treating every grand declaration as an opportunity for another flourish. That performance supplies the film with a center of gravity that the rest of its war plot sometimes lacks.

If your definition of “better” means “the one I can quote, revisit with friends and enjoy as a gloriously excessive 1990s spectacle,” Street Fighter has a legitimate case. Its camp is not a side effect; it is the movie’s defining mode.

Its military setting changes what the roster means

The adaptation makes Guile the main driver of the story. Ryu and Ken are not presented as the central wandering martial artists that players know, and Dhalsim, Zangief and Chun-Li receive altered functions within the war narrative. Those changes are not small cosmetic adjustments. They replace the tournament framework with a campaign against a dictator.

That can work as a broad action-comedy, but it weakens the connection to the games’ fighting structure. The film uses the characters as ingredients in a new story rather than allowing the game’s tournament logic to dictate the story.

Broad spectacle comes at the cost of consistency

The colors, costumes and comic-book scale make Street Fighter immediately legible as a 1990s game adaptation. The same choices can also make the tone feel scattered. Military melodrama, slapstick and villainous pageantry compete for attention, while the fighters’ personal goals are not always aligned.

That inconsistency is precisely why the film divides viewers. Some experience it as energetic camp; others see a roster rearranged around a plot that could have belonged to almost any action franchise.

Is Mortal Kombat (1995) actually good?

It depends on the standard. As a piece of polished filmmaking, it has obvious problems: the critics consensus identifies the plot, dialogue and acting as major weaknesses. As a translation of a specific fighting game, it performs better because it keeps the tournament, supernatural conflict and fighter progression visible.

Rotten Tomatoes’ current page, accessed in 2026, lists a 44% Tomatometer and a 58% Popcornmeter from more than 250,000 ratings. Those figures describe a divisive, imperfect film rather than a hidden masterpiece. They also explain why the movie has retained a following: audiences can accept the cheese when the adaptation delivers the elements they came to see.

The commercial record reinforces that staying power. The film made $70.5 million in the United States, and JustWatch Guides’ 2026 comparison reports more than $122 million worldwide. Those totals do not prove artistic quality, but they show that the film connected with a substantial audience and established a durable live-action identity for the franchise.

Animation changes the winner

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the strongest overall adaptation when animation is included. JustWatch reported an 80% Rotten Tomatoes score in 2026 and highlighted the film’s remarkable home-video performance. Its format allows the fighters, rivalries and visual techniques of the game to receive more room than a crowded live-action production can provide.

The animated film is therefore the recommendation for readers asking, “What is the best Street Fighter movie?” The answer is not necessarily the 1994 live-action film. The animated entry better captures the appeal of watching skilled fighters move through a world built around their techniques and rivalries.

Mortal Kombat Legends

The Mortal Kombat Legends films are enjoyable straight-to-video stories, but the available comparison does not rate them as consistently strong as Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. They remain useful choices for viewers who want animated versions of Mortal Kombat’s mythology and violence, yet they do not overturn the animation verdict.

Film-by-film guide

Mortal Kombat (1995): the classic live-action choice

Choose this film when you want the clearest bridge between a fighting game and a live-action fantasy adventure. Its tournament-to-Outworld structure, supernatural stakes and martial-arts progression are the reasons it wins this comparison. Expect dated effects, conspicuously cheesy dialogue and uneven acting, but also a coherent sense of what the fighters are doing and why the contest matters.

Street Fighter (1994): the camp choice

Choose this version for Raul Julia’s M. Bison, colorful production design and broad 1990s comic-book energy. It is less faithful to the game because Guile’s military campaign replaces the tournament identity and several characters are substantially rearranged. That makes it a better fit for a group viewing built around camp than for viewers seeking a close adaptation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009): a cautionary comparison

The later live-action attempt did not establish the same commercial footing. JustWatch Guides’ 2026 comparison reports less than $13 million worldwide against a $50 million budget. That result does not make the 1994 film faithful, but it helps explain why the older movie remains the better-known live-action Street Fighter reference point.

Mortal Kombat (2021): modern violence and fan references

The 2021 reboot is aimed largely at fans and updates the franchise with more explicit violence and game references. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls it “largely for fans of the source material but far from fatal(ity) flawed,” describing a revival in appropriately violent fashion.

It is the modern pick if you want gore and contemporary production values. It does not erase the 1995 film’s advantage in establishing a clear live-action tournament identity; the two movies are serving different expectations.

Street Fighter (2026): an unsettled new entry

The 2026 Street Fighter release is too new to change the established ranking with confidence. Associated Press critic Jake Coyle called it a confused, nostalgia-heavy throwback and wrote that, while video-game adaptations have improved over the last decade, this film feels like a return to an era when they were campy and actors mainly cosplayed game characters.

The promotional rivalry has become part of the conversation. Cody Rhodes, who plays Guile, said, “We will dog-walk anyone from Mortal Kombat. Anybody. And I loved Mortal Kombat… but which movie is better in terms of fighting… Street Fighter dog-walks Mortal Kombat.” GamesRadar reported Lewis Tan’s reply: “Literally almost spilled his drink laughing.” Those comments are entertaining fan banter, not evidence that the new film has surpassed the older adaptations.

Which one should you watch?

Pick Mortal Kombat (1995) if you want:

  • A story built around a tournament rather than a military campaign.
  • Supernatural stakes and an Outworld setting.
  • More legible one-on-one martial-arts progression.
  • An earnest, techno-heavy B-movie atmosphere.
  • The live-action film with the stronger commercial legacy.

Pick Street Fighter (1994) if you want:

  • Raul Julia’s flamboyant M. Bison.
  • Colorful costumes, broad comedy and deliberate camp.
  • A war-movie framework led by Guile.
  • A film to enjoy as 1990s comic-book spectacle rather than faithful game translation.

Pick Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie if you want:

  • The strongest critical standing among the compared animated options.
  • A movie that better reflects Street Fighter’s fighter-centered appeal.
  • The 80% Rotten Tomatoes score reported by JustWatch in 2026.

Pick Mortal Kombat (2021) if you want:

  • Modern gore and more overt game references.
  • A reboot made primarily for existing fans.

Where to watch

Availability depends on your country, subscription catalog and the date you check. JustWatch lists HBO Max, Prime Video and Crunchyroll among services carrying films from these franchises, but a listing in one territory does not guarantee access in another. Rotten Tomatoes lists HBO Max for Mortal Kombat alongside rental and purchase options.

For the most accurate result, search the exact film title in a regional availability guide, then confirm the service’s own listing before subscribing or renting. Check the release year as well: “Mortal Kombat” can refer to the 1995 original or the 2021 reboot, and “Street Fighter” can refer to the 1994 film, the 2009 Legend of Chun-Li entry or the 2026 release.

Final verdict

Mortal Kombat (1995) is the better live-action adaptation because it understands that the tournament is the story. Its execution is cheesy and uneven, but its structure, supernatural stakes and ensemble journey are recognizably those of the game. Street Fighter (1994) is the more flamboyant camp artifact, powered by Raul Julia and a deliberately oversized tone rather than fidelity.

For animation, switch the recommendation: Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is the standout. For a modern, violent reboot, try Mortal Kombat (2021). The 2026 Street Fighter adds a new point of comparison, but current criticism does not yet justify replacing the established live-action winner.
