Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li are the best starting points for understanding Street Fighter. Ryu is the disciplined wanderer seeking true strength, Ken is his flamboyant rival, and Chun-Li is an investigator, protector and elite fighter. Around them, the games build a worldwide cast connected by rivalries, martial-arts traditions and the criminal organization Shadaloo. The films reuse those ingredients but rearrange them into separate continuities.

Street Fighter 6 is the current main-series reference point. It takes place after Street Fighter III, updates returning characters’ lives and introduces a substantial newer generation. The 1994 live-action film, the 2009 Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li project and the announced 2026 film should be treated as adaptations, not as one continuous movie canon.

What Street Fighter is about

Capcom’s Street Fighter began in 1987, but Street Fighter II (1991) established the format most people recognize: a global tournament-style setting, selectable fighters with distinct techniques and personalities, and a recurring conflict involving rivals, criminal factions and personal quests. Later games expanded the timeline rather than replacing the original cast.

The games are not a single tournament retold unchanged. Each installment advances or reframes character stories. Street Fighter 6 is the latest main-series checkpoint, set after Street Fighter III. It shows what familiar fighters are doing now while introducing Luke, Jamie, Kimberly, Marisa and JP as major representatives of a newer generation.

The central characters

Ryu: the wandering martial artist

Ryu is the franchise’s sincere, self-improving protagonist. His official Street Fighter 6 biography describes him as “Ever training”: he travels the world seeking true strength and worthy opponents. His life is organized around practice, discipline and the search for a higher level of mastery rather than fame, money or political power.

Ryu’s story also explains one of the series’ most important ideas, the Satsui no Hado—a destructive impulse associated with killing intent. Ryu has overcome that influence, but he is not presented as finished. Continuing to train after overcoming a major inner threat is what makes him the clearest entry point for the series’ martial-arts ethos.

Ken Masters: Ryu’s rival and counterpart

Ken is Ryu’s closest rival, not his brother. The two trained together and share a foundation, but Ken is more flamboyant, competitive and socially confident. Their relationship works because they push each other while expressing opposite temperaments: Ryu is austere and itinerant, whereas Ken is instinctive, expressive and accustomed to public success.

Street Fighter 6 gives Ken a serious new problem. He is described as a former U.S. national fighting champion and former vice president of the Masters Foundation who has gone into hiding after accusations that he orchestrated a criminal plot. That status makes him more than a comic rival; it gives his current story a question of reputation, identity and survival.

Chun-Li: fighter, investigator and protector

Chun-Li is an elite high-kicking fighter and an investigator figure. In Street Fighter 6, she is a former ICPO agent who now looks after Li-Fen, a victim of the Black Moon Incident, and runs kung-fu classes. Her post-agency life combines public service, teaching and personal responsibility.

When readers ask, “Is Chun-Li a cop?”, the most accurate answer is that she has been a law-enforcement and intelligence-linked investigator, not simply a generic police officer in every version. Her ICPO background ties her to the campaign against Shadaloo and gives her a different motivation from Ryu’s search for self-mastery or Ken’s rivalry.

Guile and Charlie Nash: the military connection

Guile is a U.S. Air Force pilot whose game biography links him to dismantling Shadaloo and avenging his friend Charlie. His motivation is therefore both strategic and personal: stopping an international criminal network and pursuing the person he believes was taken from him.

Charlie Nash is the connective tissue between Guile’s military story, the Shadaloo conflict and the franchise’s changing continuity. Games and films do not treat every event involving Nash identically, so readers should regard him as a continuity-sensitive character rather than assume that one version explains all others.

M. Bison and Shadaloo

M. Bison is the recurring antagonist associated with Shadaloo and Psycho Power. Shadaloo is not just a tournament team; it is a criminal organization whose membership, plans and leadership details change across installments. Bison’s role is to turn individual rivalries into an international threat.

Asking “Who is M. Bison?” has a different answer depending on the continuity. In the games, he is the supernatural, politically ambitious center of the Shadaloo storyline. In the 1994 film, he becomes a theatrical military dictator played by Raul Julia. Capcom’s 2009 film project cast Neal McDonough in the role. Those are adaptation-specific presentations, not contradictory biographies that must be reconciled into one real-world history.

Cammy: Delta Red and Shadaloo’s shadow

Cammy’s Street Fighter 6 biography identifies her as a Delta Red special-forces member with a fated connection to Shadaloo. That affiliation gives her story a built-in tension: she serves a legitimate unit while carrying a past tied to the organization she opposes.

Cammy is therefore best understood through the contrast between disciplined service and manipulated identity. Her role in a particular game or film can vary, but the Delta Red and Shadaloo links explain why she belongs in the same larger conflict as Chun-Li, Guile and Bison.

Balrog and Vega: Shadaloo’s distinctive enforcers

Balrog and Vega are prominent Shadaloo-linked fighters in the game mythology. Balrog is defined by a boxing-based archetype and direct physical force; Vega is associated with a more acrobatic, theatrical style and a distinctive claw weapon. Their importance comes less from being the ultimate leaders than from showing how Shadaloo recruits fighters with very different motives and techniques.

Both were included in Capcom’s 2009 film cast announcement: Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog and Taboo as Vega. Film screen time and characterization differ from the games, so those castings identify adaptation roles rather than a definitive version of either fighter.

Luke

Luke is a private military contractor who teaches mixed martial arts. His combination of professional security work and coaching makes him a bridge between the franchise’s military characters and its modern training culture.

Jamie

Jamie is a Chinatown peacekeeper inspired by Yun and Yang. His role is local and community-focused, showing that a fighter’s motivation can come from protecting a neighborhood rather than entering a world tournament for personal glory.

Kimberly

Kimberly is Guy’s Bushinryu student, a prodigy who loves 1980s pop culture. Her character links an established ninja tradition to a younger fighter with a distinctly contemporary personality.

Marisa

Marisa is an Italian jewelry designer who claims ancient Greek warrior ancestry. Her civilian profession and imposing warrior identity are deliberately presented together, reinforcing the series’ habit of giving fighters lives and ambitions outside competition.

The Street Fighter films, in order

1994 live-action film

The 1994 movie is a separate, highly stylized continuity centered on Guile and M. Bison. The Associated Press described it as a campy 1990s adaptation and contrasted it with the games’ tournament setup. Its military-dictator framing and broad tone mean it should be watched as a period action film inspired by the games, not as a literal translation of the arcade story.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (2009 project)

Capcom’s 2008 announcement made Chun-Li the title character and listed Kristin Kreuk in the role. The same announcement named Michael Clarke Duncan as Balrog, Neal McDonough as M. Bison, Taboo as Vega and Chris Klein as Charlie Nash, with a planned February 2009 North American release.

This version foregrounds Chun-Li’s personal story rather than treating Guile and Bison as the sole center of the narrative. Its casting and emphasis are specific to this film continuity; they do not replace the game biographies.

Announced 2026 live-action film

Capcom announced filming with Legendary Entertainment and lists Noah Centineo as Ken, Andrew Koji as Ryu and Callina Liang as Chun-Li. The announced release date is October 16, 2026. Because production and release plans can change, that date and cast should be treated as time-sensitive announcements rather than completed-film facts.

The announced trio signals a different balance from the earlier movies: Ryu and Ken’s rivalry is central, while Chun-Li is a co-lead rather than a supporting investigator or a character omitted from the main premise.

Who is the strongest Street Fighter character?

There is no single answer that works across gameplay and story. In a competitive game, strength depends on the specific title, version, ruleset, player skill and balance updates. A character who dominates one Street Fighter 6 season can be less effective after a patch or in a different matchup.

In story terms, “strongest” is also not the same as “most important.” Ryu is the clearest protagonist and has overcome the Satsui no Hado; Bison is the recurring supernatural threat; Chun-Li, Guile and Cammy are formidable specialists; and Ken is Ryu’s near-peer rival. Their narrative functions are different, so ranking them on one ladder loses the reason each character exists.

A useful comparison asks four questions instead: What role does the character play? What motivates them? What fighting tradition or archetype do they represent? Which continuity are you discussing? Those questions produce a more accurate answer than a universal top-ten list.

How to choose a starting point

  1. Start with Ryu and Ken to understand the central rival relationship and the contrast between disciplined and flamboyant martial artists.
  2. Add Chun-Li for the investigator, protector and community-facing side of the universe.
  3. Follow Guile, Charlie Nash and Cammy to understand the military and intelligence conflict around Shadaloo.
  4. Use M. Bison as the continuity check. Compare how the games and each film reinterpret the same antagonist rather than assuming every version shares one biography.
  5. Move to Street Fighter 6 for the current game-era status of returning fighters and the newer generation.

That path explains the franchise without requiring a complete roster guide. It also makes clear why a game character’s playable moves, a film character’s screen role and a fighter’s story importance are related but not interchangeable.

The Bottom Line

Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li provide the clearest map of Street Fighter: a wandering idealist, his rival and an investigator-protector. Guile, Cammy, Charlie Nash and M. Bison explain the Shadaloo conflict, while Street Fighter 6 introduces a broader new generation. The 1994, 2009 and 2026 films are separate adaptations, so compare each character within its stated continuity.
