Street Fighter 6 is the best fighting game for most buyers. It combines a substantial avatar-based World Tour, traditional one-on-one matches, and three control styles, making it the easiest package to recommend across skill levels.
Choose TEKKEN 8 instead if three-dimensional movement, relentless offense, and a structured learning route are your priorities. Choose Mortal Kombat 1 if a cinematic story, graphic finishers, guest-character spectacle, and assist-based team building matter most.
Verdict at a glance
These games are not interchangeable versions of the same fighter. Their camera angles, movement rules, teaching tools, single-player designs, and presentation styles lead to very different experiences.

The movement descriptions above are an editorial way to distinguish the games: Street Fighter emphasizes a two-dimensional plane, TEKKEN lets fighters move around one another in three dimensions, and Mortal Kombat presents three-dimensional arenas through a more lane-based fighting model. The official pages establish the systems and modes; the labels explain how those systems feel when you play.

Why Street Fighter 6 is the best overall choice
A broad package instead of a single-purpose fighter
Capcom’s official manual divides Street Fighter 6 into three main modes. One is an immersive single-player story in which you create an avatar and interact with the Street Fighter world. Another is the traditional fighting mode that longtime fans expect. That combination gives a new player somewhere to learn and experiment without removing the direct, round-based competition that defines the series.
The breadth is the reason it is the safest recommendation. A player who starts with exploration can move toward conventional matches at their own pace, while an experienced player can spend most of the time in the traditional mode. You are not buying a game that only makes sense in ranked competition or only works as a story spectacle.
Three control styles lower the entry barrier
Nintendo’s official Switch 2 listing identifies Classic, Modern, and Dynamic control types. Classic preserves the traditional input approach. Modern reduces the execution burden for players who want simpler access to special moves and attacks. Dynamic is designed around assisted actions during play. The exact choice depends on whether you value full manual control, easier first sessions, or more assistance while learning the basics.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

It gives a beginner a starting point and leaves room to change methods as confidence grows. A sensible path is to begin with Modern or Dynamic while learning movement and spacing, then test Classic when you want to practice the complete command set. That is a practical recommendation, not a requirement imposed by the game.
Who should buy it
- Choose Street Fighter 6 when several people with different experience levels will play.
- Choose it when you want a substantial solo mode before committing to head-to-head matches.
- Choose it when you are unsure whether simplified or traditional controls will suit you.
- Choose it when you want a sports-like martial-arts presentation rather than a horror-film tone.
Its main limitation as a recommendation is not a documented feature gap; it is preference. Someone who specifically wants free movement around a 3D opponent or a cinematic gore showcase may be happier elsewhere.
Why TEKKEN 8 is the specialist pick for 3D combat
Movement changes the entire neutral game
TEKKEN 8 is built around three-dimensional movement. Instead of treating the opponent as a target on a single horizontal line, you can use sidesteps and spatial positioning to alter how attacks connect. That makes distance management, angles, and timing feel different from Street Fighter’s 2D spacing. If the idea of circling an opponent and creating openings through movement is what attracts you to fighting games, TEKKEN 8 is the clearest choice of the three.
The Heat System rewards pressure
Bandai Namco describes the game’s direction in one sentence: “TEKKEN 8 will feature exciting new gameplay focused on ‘Aggressive’ tactics.” Its Heat System lets players harness that aggressiveness and use character-specific special movements and abilities. In practical terms, the system gives offense a deliberate framework rather than treating pressure as an accidental by-product of landing a hit.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
That emphasis suits players who enjoy making the opponent respond. It also means that defensive, wait-and-see play is not the only strategic language. You must learn when your character’s Heat options are valuable, how to force a reaction, and when continuing an attack is safer than resetting to neutral. The system is character-specific, so the best route is to study the tools for the fighter you actually intend to use instead of memorizing a generic plan.
Arcade Quest is a guided on-ramp
Arcade Quest lets you create an avatar, visit arcades, defeat rivals, acquire basic knowledge, learn practical techniques, and unlock customization items. It is more than a sequence of matches: the mode wraps instruction in a progression structure so that a newcomer has a reason to keep applying each lesson.
This makes TEKKEN 8 a strong answer to “What is the best fighting game for beginners?” when the beginner is specifically interested in 3D fighters. Street Fighter 6 offers broader control flexibility, but Arcade Quest provides a more focused route into TEKKEN’s movement and offense.
Platform and multiplayer facts
Bandai Namco lists TEKKEN 8 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, powered by Unreal Engine 5. The official product information specifies offline local multiplayer for one or two players and online multiplayer for two players. Those figures describe the supported match formats, not a ranking of the games’ online populations.

Why Mortal Kombat 1 is the spectacle-first choice
A cinematic story and a reset premise
PlayStation describes Mortal Kombat 1 as a “new Era of Kombat” with a cinematic story. The official page also lists offline and online modes, Fatal Blows, defensive Breakers, and Fatalities. This is the game to choose when presentation is part of the reason you play a fighter, not merely decoration around the matches.
The story-led introduction is useful for players who want a clear narrative context for the roster. It also establishes the game’s tone immediately: Mortal Kombat’s identity is built around exaggerated violence, finishing moves, and theatrical character encounters rather than the sports-like presentation of Street Fighter.

Kameo Fighters add an assist layer
Warner Bros. Games says Mortal Kombat 1 has a separate roster of Kameo Fighters who assist during matches. Your main fighter and your Kameo selection therefore form a team, even though they are not equivalent full-time characters. That structure changes how you think about openings, defensive escapes, and combo extensions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose MK1 for this system if you enjoy building a pair of complementary tools. It is a different strategic proposition from the traditional one-character focus of Street Fighter 6 and from TEKKEN 8’s character-specific Heat pressure. The assist layer can be exciting, but it also adds another selection to learn before you feel fully comfortable.
Definitive Edition and what it includes
Warner Bros. Games announced Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition on May 14, 2025. The bundle contains the main game, the Khaos Reigns story expansion, Kombat Pack, Kombat Pack 2, Animalities, and additional skins. The announcement lists digital availability for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, and Nintendo Switch.
| Definitive Edition platform | MSRP listed in the May 14, 2025 announcement |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | $69.99 |
| Xbox Series X|S | $69.99 |
| PC | $69.99 |
| Nintendo Switch | $59.99 |
Those are the announced manufacturer suggested retail prices, not a promise that every retailer will charge them today. They are useful when comparing the amount of included content, especially if you would otherwise need to buy the story expansion and character packs separately.
Who should buy it
- Choose Mortal Kombat 1 when cinematic story presentation is your first priority.
- Choose it when Fatalities, Fatal Blows, and the series’ graphic tone are part of the appeal.
- Choose it when you want an assist-based team decision through Kameo Fighters.
- Choose Definitive Edition when its bundled expansion, packs, Animalities, and skins justify the platform price for you.
Edition complexity is the main buying issue. Before checkout, verify that the edition on your platform contains the downloadable content you want and that the listed price is current in your region.

Which has the best movement system?
Street Fighter 6 is the most direct choice for players who enjoy 2D spacing: controlling a horizontal distance, choosing when to approach, and making each jump, block, or attack matter in a clear plane. TEKKEN 8 is for players who want to change the angle of an engagement with three-dimensional movement and sidesteps. Mortal Kombat 1 presents its fights in 3D but uses a more lane-based structure, so its spatial feel is distinct from both of the other games.
There is no universal winner here. Select the movement model you want to practice for dozens of hours, because familiarity with one does not transfer perfectly to another.

Which has the best beginner experience?
Street Fighter 6 has the broadest beginner safety net because its World Tour mode and three control types address different kinds of uncertainty. You can be unsure about the genre, the controls, or your preferred play style and still find a starting point.
TEKKEN 8 is the better beginner choice for someone already committed to 3D fighting. Arcade Quest supplies a sequence of basic knowledge and practical techniques rather than asking you to learn every system from online matches alone.
Mortal Kombat 1 introduces its mechanics through tutorials and a story-led structure, according to the comparative feature description, but its appeal assumes that you are comfortable with the series’ intense visual tone and assist-based decisions.
Which has the best story?
Mortal Kombat 1 is the clear choice if “best story” means the most cinematic presentation and the strongest narrative framing. Its official description centers a cinematic story and a new era for the franchise, and the Khaos Reigns expansion adds another story chapter in Definitive Edition.
Street Fighter 6’s World Tour is better understood as an interactive adventure around an avatar and the Street Fighter world. TEKKEN 8 offers a main storyline plus character episodes, giving its solo content a different structure. Choose according to whether you want a film-like campaign, an exploratory avatar journey, or a fighting-focused story with character episodes.
Which has the strongest competitive identity?
Street Fighter 6 represents the most traditional one-on-one structure of the three. TEKKEN 8 builds its identity around aggressive offense and the Heat System, with tools that differ by character. Mortal Kombat 1 adds Kameo Fighters, so team construction and assist timing become part of the competitive plan.
That distinction matters more than a generic claim that one game is “more competitive.” All three can support serious improvement; they simply ask you to improve at different systems.

Which has the best local and online fit?
TEKKEN 8’s official listing is the most specific about match formats: one or two players locally and two players online. Mortal Kombat 1’s PlayStation page confirms offline and online modes. The cited Street Fighter 6 material establishes its traditional fighting mode but does not provide a comparable player-count breakdown.
For a living-room purchase, check the exact platform edition and controller support before ordering. A platform-compatible arcade stick or fight pad can be worthwhile for local or ranked play, but compatibility differs between console generations, so confirm it for your system rather than assuming a USB device will work everywhere.

Compare like with like
Do not compare a base game on one platform with a complete bundle on another and call the cheaper sticker price the better value. First identify whether you are buying a standard edition, a bundle with expansions, or a digital package that includes character content. Mortal Kombat 1 has a clearly documented Definitive Edition; current comparable prices for Street Fighter 6 and TEKKEN 8 are not established in the cited material, so check the storefront for your platform and region.
Confirm the generation
TEKKEN 8 is documented for current-generation PlayStation and Xbox consoles plus PC. Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition is listed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Street Fighter 6 has an official Nintendo Switch 2 listing in the cited material. Match the game edition to the hardware you actually own, and read the listing’s compatibility notes before buying a physical accessory or a downloadable upgrade.
A practical decision guide
- Start with movement. Pick Street Fighter 6 for 2D spacing, TEKKEN 8 for three-dimensional movement, or Mortal Kombat 1 for its lane-based 3D presentation.
- Decide how you want to learn. Choose Street Fighter 6 for flexible controls and World Tour, TEKKEN 8 for Arcade Quest’s guided practice, or Mortal Kombat 1 for tutorials wrapped in a cinematic campaign.
- Set your tone preference. Street Fighter 6 uses a martial-arts sports presentation; TEKKEN 8 emphasizes character-driven aggression; Mortal Kombat 1 foregrounds gore and finishing-move spectacle.
- Choose your match system. Select traditional one-on-one play, Heat-based offense, or a main fighter plus Kameo assist.
- Check the exact edition and platform. For Mortal Kombat 1, decide whether Definitive Edition’s included expansion and packs justify its listed MSRP. For every game, verify the storefront, console generation, and controller compatibility.
Final recommendation
Buy Street Fighter 6 if you want the strongest all-round package, the least risky recommendation for a group, and a clear path from solo exploration to traditional matches. Buy TEKKEN 8 if three-dimensional movement and pressure-heavy offense are the reason you want a fighting game. Buy Mortal Kombat 1 if a cinematic story, graphic finishers, Kameo assists, and bundled story and character content matter more than a simpler edition lineup.
No reliable, comparable player-population ranking for all three games is established by the cited official pages, so popularity should not decide this comparison. Your preferred movement model, learning route, tone, and edition value are better buying signals.
