If Street Fighter 6 feels delayed online, start with the network path: connect the playing device directly to the router with Ethernet, stop other devices from using the connection, and restart the modem, router, and game. Then check whether the pre-match screen reports a relay connection instead of direct peer-to-peer (P2P). Relay fallback, strict NAT, router filtering, the other player’s network, and unstable PC frame times can all produce different symptoms that feel like “lag.” The sequence below separates those causes so you can change one thing at a time.
Identify the pattern before changing settings
The fastest fix depends on whether the problem affects every opponent, one opponent, or only the visual smoothness of the game. Record the symptom first, then use the matching check in this table.
| Symptom | Likely scope | First check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inputs feel late against most or all opponents | Your connection, shared bandwidth, or PC performance | Play one match over wired Ethernet with other devices disconnected | A change on your side points to Wi-Fi, congestion, or local performance rather than a single opponent |
| Matchmaking cancels or shows a 50383-MW1 error | Often a NAT difference or router filtering issue | Check the router’s NAT status, UPnP, and packet-filtering settings | A restrictive NAT can prevent some player-to-player paths |
| A 50382-MW1 error appears with one friend | Opponent-specific P2P timeout | Test another opponent, then have both players inspect their networks | If other matches work, the other player’s NAT, ISP, or router environment becomes more likely |
| The pre-match display shows a relay icon | Direct P2P could not be established | Compare a relay match with a match showing the proper P2P icon | Capcom says relay fallback lowers match quality |
| Offline training or every mode stutters on PC | Frame-rate or frame-time instability | Check frame rate, drivers, background programs, and graphics settings | Uneven local frames can feel like input delay even when the network is healthy |
Do not treat every slow-feeling match as an Internet-latency problem. A useful baseline is one short test in Training or another offline mode, followed by one online match with a known-good opponent. If the offline test stutters, fix the PC or console performance first. If offline play is smooth but online play changes with the connection type, investigate the network path.
How Street Fighter 6 reaches another player
Most network battles use peer-to-peer
Street Fighter 6 network battles are built around a connection between the two players rather than a single universal gameplay server. That makes the reachability of both homes, routers, and Internet service providers important. A connection that works perfectly with one opponent can fail with another because the two NAT environments handle inbound and outbound traffic differently.

Relay fallback is a warning, not a faster route
Capcom’s online guidance explains that when the ports needed for direct P2P are not open, the game may fall back to a relay connection. The pre-match screen places an icon above each player title; one icon identifies relay and another identifies a proper P2P connection. Capcom warns that when a relay is used, “match quality will be poor.” Treat the icon as diagnostic information: compare matches that show direct P2P with those that show relay before blaming the game’s controls.
NAT and packet filtering decide who can connect
NAT translates private addresses inside your home network to the public address used on the Internet. A strict or heavily filtered NAT can allow ordinary web traffic while blocking the inbound path needed for a particular opponent. Router firewalls, disabled UPnP, carrier-grade NAT from an ISP, and network policies on shared or apartment connections can all contribute. The exact label varies by router, so use the router manufacturer’s or ISP’s documentation when interpreting the status.
Fixes in the safest order
Work from reversible changes to more involved router changes. After each step, test the same mode and, when possible, the same opponent so you know which change mattered.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Create a clean baseline
- Close Street Fighter 6.
- Power off the modem and router. Capcom advises waiting after network equipment is powered off before reconnecting it; follow the waiting interval in your equipment’s instructions rather than immediately switching it back on.
- Reconnect the modem, wait for its normal Internet status, then reconnect the router and wait for it to finish starting.
- Restart the game and run one controlled match.
- Temporarily disconnect other computers, phones, televisions, consoles, cloud-sync clients, downloads, and streams. Capcom notes that multiple devices using the connection can make the connection unstable.
This baseline removes stale router state and household congestion without changing a permanent setting. Restore the other devices after testing, then add them back one at a time if the problem returns.

2. Replace Wi-Fi with direct Ethernet
If the console or PC is on Wi-Fi, connect it directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and repeat the test from the same room and at the same time of day. Capcom specifically recommends switching from a wireless connection to a wired one for stability. A standard Cat6 cable is more than adequate for this purpose; the important change is the physical, dedicated path, not a special gaming label.
Wired networking removes radio interference, changing signal strength, and contention with other wireless devices. It cannot repair a remote player’s NAT, a relay route, an ISP outage, or an unstable PC frame rate. If wired play is no better, leave the cable connected while you continue testing so Wi-Fi is no longer a variable.
3. Check the pre-match connection icon
- Enter an online mode and look at the player information on the pre-match screen.
- Note whether the icon above the player title indicates relay or proper P2P.
- Record whether the match feels different when the P2P icon appears.
- If your matches repeatedly fall back to relay, move to the NAT and router checks below.
A relay icon does not prove that your own router is the only cause. Direct P2P requires both players to be reachable, so the other player’s filtering can trigger the fallback. It does, however, explain why a particular match can feel much worse than one with direct P2P.
4. Review NAT, UPnP, and filtering
- Open the router’s administration page and find its Internet or network-status section.
- Record the displayed NAT condition and whether UPnP is enabled. Do not change several firewall options at once.
- Check whether packet filtering, parental controls, guest-network isolation, or an ISP-provided security layer is blocking unsolicited or peer traffic.
- Use the router or ISP documentation to determine which changes are supported, then retest the game.
Capcom’s error guidance associates frequent 50383-MW1 errors with differences in NAT, while 50382-MW1 represents a player-to-player connection timeout. Those codes are clues, not proof that one particular setting must be changed. If the router is behind another router or modem-router combination, double NAT can make reachability harder; ask the ISP whether the supplied device is routing or only bridging before altering it.

- The unique flat cable shape allows for a cleaner and safer installation. You can easily and seamlessly make the cable run along walls, follow edges & corners or even make it completely invisible by sliding it under a carpet.
Do not paste a generic Street Fighter V port list into an SF6 setup guide. The official SF6 pages explain the P2P and relay behavior but do not publish a universal SF6 port table. Forwarding arbitrary ports can weaken the router’s protection and still fail when the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. Only apply a port or firewall rule documented for your exact equipment and service.
5. Test the opponent-specific case
If Ranked and Casual matches normally work but a Custom Room or a match with one friend repeatedly fails, test a different opponent. A successful match with several other players makes a problem limited to that friend’s network more likely than a global game fault. Have both players compare wired versus Wi-Fi, NAT status, UPnP, router filtering, and any ISP restrictions. Either side can be the endpoint that prevents direct P2P, and both sides may need to change settings or contact the ISP.
6. Separate PC frame time from network delay
On PC, a low or uneven frame rate can make every input appear late. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance recommends meeting the game’s minimum system requirements, updating Windows and graphics drivers, checking graphics-driver and power settings, closing background applications, and verifying the Steam game cache. If frame pacing remains unstable, lower the game’s Quality settings to Low or Lowest and restart as needed.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Play a short offline session and watch for hitching, uneven animation, or sudden drops.
- Install current Windows and graphics-driver updates appropriate to your hardware.
- Close browsers, recording tools, overlays, launchers, downloads, and other applications that consume CPU, GPU, memory, or disk bandwidth.
- Use Steam’s command to verify the game’s installed files.
- Reduce Quality settings to Low or Lowest, restart the game, and repeat the same offline and online tests.
When offline play becomes smooth but online matches still feel delayed, return to the network checks. When both offline and online play remain uneven, changing DNS or router ports will not fix a local frame-time problem.

Understanding matchmaking modes and disconnect penalties
The official manual lists three online formats: Ranked Match, Casual Match, and Custom Room. Ranked Match changes League Points; Casual Match does not. Custom Room is useful for testing a particular friend, but a failed room connection does not by itself show that Ranked or Casual matchmaking is broken.
Repeated intentional disconnections can lead to penalties, including loss of access to matchmaking. A communication error, timeout, or relay-quality problem is not the same as deliberately quitting, so avoid repeatedly forcing disconnects as a troubleshooting method. Capture the error and leave the game connected while you test the network.
Platform-focused checklists
PC
- Use Ethernet for the baseline.
- Check frame rate and frame pacing in an offline mode before interpreting online feel.
- Update Windows and graphics drivers, review driver and power settings, close background applications, and verify Steam files.
- Lower Quality to Low or Lowest if frame rate is unstable, then restart.
- Record the exact error code and the relay or P2P icon.
Console
- Connect the console directly to the router for the comparison test.
- Restart the modem, router, console, and game in that order after the network equipment has had time to power down.
- Use the console’s network-information screen and the router’s status page to record NAT information.
- Check for guest-network isolation, packet filtering, or an ISP security service that could block peer traffic.
- Test another opponent before concluding that the console or game service is unavailable.
Changes that are unlikely to be a universal cure
There is no established “best DNS” setting
The reviewed official guidance provides no supported evidence that one public DNS service universally fixes SF6 input delay or matchmaking. DNS helps resolve names; it does not make a Wi-Fi radio stable, open a strict NAT, create a direct P2P path, or correct a PC’s frame time. If you change DNS for another reason, treat it as a separate experiment and keep the original setting recorded.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume a global outage from one failed room
A timeout with one friend is consistent with an opponent-specific network incompatibility. Test several opponents and modes before treating the issue as a service-wide outage. The available official material does not establish a single current global outage or provide a universal outage duration. If every opponent, every mode, and both wired and Wi-Fi tests fail, check Capcom’s current notices and support channels rather than guessing at router settings.

When to escalate and what to send
Contact support or your ISP after the controlled tests produce repeatable evidence. A useful report is more actionable than “online feels laggy.” Include:
- The exact error code, such as
50382-MW1or50383-MW1, and the screen on which it appeared. - Platform and game mode: PC or console, Ranked, Casual, or Custom Room.
- Whether the issue affects every opponent or only one friend.
- Wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi, and whether other household devices were disconnected.
- Router NAT status, UPnP state, and any packet-filtering or guest-network setting you changed.
- Whether the pre-match icon showed relay or proper P2P.
- Whether offline and online frame rates were stable, plus the graphics settings used on PC.
- The approximate time of the failure and whether restarting the modem, router, and game changed anything.
Capcom’s support index directs players to the SF6 online manual, the Steam troubleshooting guide, and the support contact form. Use the exact labels and codes from your screen, and describe the wired comparison; support can then distinguish a local performance issue, a NAT incompatibility, and a broader service problem.
A practical decision path
- Only Wi-Fi fails: stay on Ethernet, remove household traffic, and retest.
- Relay appears repeatedly: inspect both players’ NAT, UPnP, and filtering; do not use an unrelated SFV port list.
- One friend fails while others work: compare both networks and involve the friend’s ISP or router if necessary.
- Offline play stutters: follow the PC performance checklist before changing network settings.
- Every opponent and mode fails: preserve the evidence, check official notices, and escalate with the error code and platform details.
This order keeps the low-risk fixes first and prevents a router change from masking a frame-rate problem. It also recognizes the central limitation of SF6’s P2P design: the quality of a match depends on the path available between two players, not solely on the person reporting the delay.
