Classic is Street Fighter 6’s traditional six-button control scheme, Modern simplifies special-move inputs and adds assisted combo routes while remaining available online, and Dynamic uses AI-assisted attacks for limited offline casual play. For online matches, choose Classic or Modern; Dynamic is not eligible.

The right choice depends on how much execution you want to handle, whether you play online, and whether you are learning a character or preserving the series’ traditional control vocabulary.

The short answer: which control type should you choose?

Street Fighter 6 offers three distinct control types rather than three cosmetic layouts. They change how you call special moves, how many attacks are directly assigned to buttons, and which modes you can enter.

  • Choose Classic if you want the familiar Street Fighter six-button layout, traditional command inputs, and the broadest direct control over attacks.
  • Choose Modern if you are new to fighting games, returning after a long break, or want simpler special-move execution without giving up online play.
  • Choose Dynamic for quick, casual local games and basic character experimentation. It is restricted to certain offline Fighting Ground modes and cannot be used in online matches.

Classic and Modern are both available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub, and World Tour. Dynamic is the exception: its mode access is narrower, so online play is a hard constraint rather than a preference.

How the three control types differ

Control type Input philosophy Best suited to Online availability Mode scope
Classic Traditional six-button layout and command inputs Experienced players and learners of traditional execution Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour
Modern Simplified special-move inputs plus assisted combos Beginners, returning players and anyone seeking easier execution Yes Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour
Dynamic AI-assisted attack selection Casual local play and quick character experimentation No Certain offline Fighting Ground modes only

The table captures the practical decision: Classic and Modern are full choices for the game’s online and hub-based experiences, while Dynamic is a deliberately limited way to make an offline match approachable immediately.

Classic controls: the traditional Street Fighter layout

What Classic preserves

Classic uses the familiar six-button setup from earlier Street Fighter games. Light, medium and heavy punches and kicks each have their own attack buttons, and special moves use the series’ conventional directional command inputs. Nintendo describes it as a “Traditional six-button setup.”

This arrangement gives every normal attack a dedicated place. Players who already know the series’ vocabulary can transfer habits more directly: movement directions, button strengths and command inputs remain the organizing principles instead of being condensed into a smaller set of prompts.

Where Classic is available

Classic can be selected in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour. It is therefore usable for offline practice, avatar and hub activities, and online matches. That broad availability makes it the least restrictive option when you do not yet know which modes you will play most.

Who benefits from Classic

  • Experienced Street Fighter players: the six-button layout and command-input model match the control language they already use.
  • Players studying traditional execution: Classic lets you practice the directional motions and timing associated with older entries.
  • Players wanting direct attack selection: each normal attack has a dedicated button rather than being selected through an assisted system.

Classic does ask you to perform the full command for a special move. If remembering directional motions or executing them under pressure is the main barrier, Modern removes much of that initial burden.

Modern controls: simplified inputs that still work online

How Modern changes execution

Modern replaces the most demanding part of many special-move inputs with a simpler command. Capcom explains that a special attack can be performed by combining the “Special Move” button with one directional input. Instead of reproducing a traditional motion every time, you select the special-move function and indicate a direction.

“For those who are worried that fighting game inputs are too complicated, we would like to introduce you to Street Fighter 6’s Modern Control Type, where a special move can be performed by combining the ‘Special Move’ button with one directional input.” — Capcom News, June 2, 2022

Modern also includes assisted combo routes. Holding the “Assist” button while pressing attack buttons produces simple combos, giving a new player a repeatable way to turn individual attacks into a sequence while learning spacing and timing.

Why Modern is easier for many beginners

Modern reduces the number of separate execution tasks you must remember at once. A beginner can concentrate on movement, blocking, distance and recognizing an opening rather than first mastering every directional motion. The assisted-combo function adds a second safety net: you can begin with a consistent route and gradually learn what each attack in that route does.

“Easier” does not mean that Modern plays the match for you. You still have to move, defend, choose when to attack and understand the character’s range. The control type mainly lowers the input barrier so those decisions can be learned sooner.

Modern’s mode access

Modern is available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, including online modes. You can therefore learn with simplified inputs and take that same control type into online matches instead of switching solely because you want to play against other people.

Character-specific move access, control feel and the practical effect of a control type can vary by character, patch, event and platform. The official descriptions establish Modern’s simplified input philosophy and online availability; they do not establish a universal performance advantage for every character.

Dynamic controls: AI assistance for offline casual play

What “AI-assisted attacks” means here

Nintendo labels Dynamic as “Battle with AI-assisted attacks.” Capcom positions it for quick casual games with friends and family and for learning the basics of a character. Rather than asking you to select every attack through the Classic or Modern vocabulary, the system assists with attack choice during play.

That makes Dynamic useful when the goal is to start a local match quickly, demonstrate the game to someone unfamiliar with fighting games, or sample a character before committing to a more deliberate control scheme.

Street Fighter 6 - PS4
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

The non-negotiable restriction

Dynamic is limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes. It cannot be used in online matches. You cannot take Dynamic into Battle Hub online play or an online Fighting Ground match, so anyone planning to compete or practice against remote opponents should select Classic or Modern instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because Dynamic’s restriction is about mode eligibility, not personal preference, check the mode before selecting it for a group session. A control type that works for a local, offline round may not be accepted when the match changes to an online ruleset.

Classic, Modern and Dynamic by common decision

“I have never played a fighting game.”

Start with Modern for a guided entry. Its one-direction special-move method and assisted combos let you learn movement, blocking and attack timing without first memorizing the full command-input catalogue. Once those fundamentals feel comfortable, you can test Classic in practice and decide whether traditional execution adds enjoyment.

“I played older Street Fighter games.”

Start with Classic if you want the control vocabulary to feel familiar. You can still switch to Modern when teaching someone else, experimenting with a new character or reducing execution demands during online sessions.

“I mainly want online matches.”

Use Classic or Modern. Dynamic cannot be used online, while both Classic and Modern are available in the online-capable parts of Fighting Ground and in Battle Hub.

“I am playing locally with family or friends.”

Dynamic can be the quickest way to make an informal offline round playable for someone who does not know fighting-game inputs. Classic and Modern remain appropriate when players want more deliberate control or intend to carry the same setup into online play later.

“I want to learn a character’s fundamentals.”

Modern is a practical starting point because it removes much of the input overhead while you study range, movement and basic attack choices. Classic is better when your learning goal specifically includes traditional command execution. Dynamic is best for an initial, casual taste rather than a complete study of the character’s control vocabulary.

What changes when you switch control types?

Switching is not merely changing button labels. You are changing the input philosophy you use to express attacks:

  • Classic to Modern: traditional command motions become simplified special-move commands, and assisted combos become available through the Assist button.
  • Modern to Classic: you regain the six-button arrangement and must perform traditional command inputs for special moves.
  • Classic or Modern to Dynamic: attack selection becomes AI-assisted, but your available play is narrowed to supported offline Fighting Ground modes.

Give yourself a short adjustment period after changing. Muscle memory from one layout can make another feel unfamiliar even when the character itself has not changed. Compare the control type in a low-pressure practice or local session before judging it in a serious online match.

Online, offline and mode compatibility

Where you want to play Classic Modern Dynamic
Fighting Ground Yes Yes Only certain offline modes
Battle Hub Yes Yes No online use
World Tour Yes Yes Not established as a supported mode
Online matches Yes Yes No

“Yes” here means the official descriptions identify the control type as available in that mode family. Dynamic’s support is narrower than the other two, and the exact offline Fighting Ground activities it supports should be verified in the game’s current mode selection on your platform.

Damage, balance and tournament caveats

The official material establishes input methods and mode availability, not a universal damage ranking or tournament result for the three control types. Control feel, character-specific move access, damage behavior and event rules can vary by character, patch, event and platform.

Do not choose a control type on the assumption that one is automatically stronger in every situation. If you are entering an organized event, read that event’s current rules before registering; tournament policies can impose requirements that are separate from the game’s normal online availability.

Street Fighter 6 on Nintendo Switch 2

Nintendo’s official listing identifies Street Fighter 6 for Nintendo Switch 2, released May 6, 2025, and published by CAPCOM. The listing also identifies a Years 1-2 Fighters Edition containing additional characters and stages. Edition availability and naming can vary by region and platform, but the three control concepts remain the relevant distinction when you are deciding how to play.

A practical first-session plan

  1. Decide whether online play matters. If it does, remove Dynamic from consideration immediately.
  2. Pick an execution target. Choose Classic for traditional six-button command inputs or Modern for simplified special moves and assisted combos.
  3. Use a low-pressure mode first. Try the chosen layout in Fighting Ground or World Tour before entering a competitive online match.
  4. Test one character’s core actions. Confirm that movement, blocking, a basic attack and a special move feel understandable with the selected inputs.
  5. Reassess after learning the fundamentals. Stay with Modern if it lets you focus on decisions, or move to Classic if traditional execution is part of your goal.

There is no requirement to treat the first choice as permanent. The important constraint is Dynamic’s offline-only status; Classic and Modern are the flexible options when you expect to move between modes.

Bottom line

Classic is the full traditional Street Fighter experience: six buttons, command inputs and the broadest direct control. Modern is the accessibility-focused alternative: one-direction special-move commands and assisted combos without giving up online play. Dynamic is an AI-assisted option for certain offline Fighting Ground sessions, useful for casual introductions but unavailable online.

If you are unsure, begin with Modern, learn the game’s movement and defensive decisions, and try Classic when you want to develop traditional execution. Select Dynamic only when you specifically want a quick offline game and do not need online compatibility.
