Street Fighter 6 combines a launch roster of 18 fighters with a single-player mode, online hub and arcade-style extras that deliberately connect the game to Street Fighter history. The classic characters are not simply copied from earlier games: returning veterans receive new physiques, clothing and life circumstances, while World Tour and Battle Hub let you encounter older fighters, learn their styles and play classic Capcom games.

This guide identifies the launch-era veterans, explains where historical references appear, and separates documented Capcom design choices from fan interpretation.

What counts as a classic character in Street Fighter 6?

For this article, “classic cast” means returning Street Fighter veterans who appear in the launch-era roster or subsequent game updates. It does not mean that every fighter from the franchise’s past is playable in the base game. Street Fighter 6 launched on June 2, 2023, and its Standard Edition included Fighting Ground, World Tour, Battle Hub and 18 starting characters.

The launch roster mixes long-established World Warriors with fighters introduced in later Street Fighter generations and six new characters. That mix matters: a familiar silhouette may represent an arcade-era icon, a character from Street Fighter IV or V, or an entirely new fighter designed to stand beside the veterans.

Launch-roster group Characters What makes them recognizable
Foundational World Warriors Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, E. Honda, Blanka, Zangief and Dhalsim The core faces and fighting styles associated with the early Street Fighter II era: karate and shoto techniques, military charge attacks, sumo, grappling, and yoga-based long-range attacks.
Returning later-generation fighters Cammy, Dee Jay, Juri and Luke Veterans whose identities come from later entries or newer eras of the series. Their presence shows that “classic” can mean established franchise history, not only the original arcade roster.
New launch fighters Jamie, Kimberly, Manon, Marisa, Lily and JP New personalities, settings and fighting concepts that extend the World Warriors idea instead of reproducing an older character.

Downloadable characters can change the roster after launch, so the table above should be read as a launch reference rather than a permanent list of every fighter available in the current version.

Which old Street Fighter characters can you play?

Ryu and Ken: the central rivalry

Ryu and Ken remain the clearest link to the series’ original competitive formula. Their familiar martial-arts silhouettes and closely related move identities make them immediately legible to returning players, but Street Fighter 6 presents them as people who have moved beyond the visual language of their earliest appearances. Ryu’s traveling-warrior image and Ken’s changed circumstances are expressed through updated clothing and presentation rather than a simple redraw of their Street Fighter II costumes.

Chun-Li, Guile and the World Warrior foundation

Chun-Li and Guile preserve two of the franchise’s most recognizable archetypes: the mobile martial artist with a strong personal history and the disciplined military fighter built around controlled spacing. Their inclusion gives the launch roster a direct bridge to the World Warriors associated with the 1991 arcade breakthrough.

E. Honda, Blanka, Zangief and Dhalsim

E. Honda, Blanka, Zangief and Dhalsim represent the highly distinct visual and mechanical identities that made the early cast memorable. Sumo, grappling, elastic yoga attacks and Blanka’s animal-like movement remain easy to identify, even after the characters receive modern models, animations and costumes. These fighters are useful examples of how SF6 preserves a signature concept while updating its physical presentation.

Cammy, Dee Jay, Juri and Luke

Cammy, Dee Jay and Juri are returning favorites from later periods of the series, while Luke is a more recent face who became central to Street Fighter’s modern direction. Grouping them separately prevents a common mistake: treating every returning fighter as if they originated in Street Fighter II. Their histories and visual languages are different, yet SF6 gives all of them the same modern character-design treatment.

How are the classic fighters different in SF6?

Recognizable silhouettes, redesigned bodies

Capcom’s classic-cast interview explains that the development team gave the 18 starting characters distinct muscle tones. The goal was not to make every fighter conform to one idealized body type. A character’s build, posture and movement were treated as part of the way the player reads that character at a glance.

The same interview records the team’s visual research process: “One idea we toyed around with was using the Street Fighter II anime movie as a reference.” That statement comes from Capcom’s development discussion, not from fan speculation. It helps explain why some SF6 poses and proportions feel connected to the franchise’s animated history while still belonging to a contemporary 3D fighting game.

Costumes signal a changed life stage

Many returning fighters wear clothing that communicates where they are in life now, rather than repeating their oldest outfit indefinitely. A new jacket, hairstyle, training uniform or change in silhouette can indicate work, travel, responsibility or a shift in attitude. These choices function as story information: the fighter is recognizable because the core identity remains, but the presentation acknowledges that the character has continued living between games.

Moves are encountered in a new framework

Fighting Ground provides character guides, tutorials, practice tools and standard Versus play. This is the practical place to compare a veteran’s modern commands, timing and presentation with memories of earlier games. A move may look familiar while being taught, animated or combined differently in SF6, so an old player should treat nostalgia as a starting point rather than assume every command is unchanged.

Where can you meet classic fighters in World Tour?

World Tour is the best place to see the classic cast as characters rather than only as selectable portraits. You create an avatar, travel through the Street Fighter world and meet legendary fighters who act as masters. Capcom describes the mode as a single-player story with RPG elements; PlayStation’s overview emphasizes the avatar creator and the relationships with those masters.

  1. Create your avatar. The mode begins with a customizable player character rather than a fixed veteran.
  2. Travel through the world. Story locations and encounters introduce the setting beyond a traditional arcade ladder.
  3. Find legendary fighters. Established characters appear as masters or important non-player characters instead of being limited to the versus-select screen.
  4. Study a master’s style. Your avatar can learn techniques associated with the fighter you meet.
  5. Build a personal move set. The mode lets you combine learned abilities as your story character develops, turning a historical reference into something interactive.

This structure answers the question “Where are the old characters?” more accurately than a list of cameos. In World Tour, a veteran is part of the player’s progression: you meet that character, learn from that character and use the resulting style on an avatar of your own.

What historical references are playable in Battle Hub?

Battle Hub is more than an online lobby. Its Game Center contains playable Capcom arcade titles, including Street Fighter II and Final Fight in the official description. These cabinets are direct, hands-on links to the company’s arcade history: you can play the older games rather than merely look at a background poster or a decorative cabinet.

The distinction between a reference and a playable historical object is useful:

Reference type Where it appears What the player can do
Returning character Fighting Ground, World Tour and other modes where that fighter is available Choose the modern version, practice the moves or encounter the fighter as a master or NPC.
Master relationship World Tour Meet a legendary fighter and add elements of that style to an avatar move set.
Playable arcade cabinet Battle Hub Game Center Launch a classic Capcom game such as Street Fighter II or Final Fight.
Visual or story reference Character design, costumes, locations or dialogue Observe the connection, while remembering that only explicitly documented details should be treated as official explanations.

How Kimberly and Manon expand the reference system

SF6’s references are not limited to returning fighters. A Sony Interactive Entertainment interview with Capcom’s design staff discusses Kimberly and Manon through the broader World Warriors concept and explains how their backgrounds informed their visual identities.

Kimberly

Kimberly’s design connects her upbringing and personal interests to the way she presents herself. Her identity is not a nostalgia costume placed on a new character; it is a deliberate combination of cultural background, visual cues and the series’ tradition of exaggerated combat personalities.

Manon

Manon’s cultural background is likewise part of her character construction. Her look and presence draw on that identity while fitting the larger Street Fighter language of strong silhouettes and immediately readable combat styles. Any deeper symbolic interpretation should be labeled as analysis, because Capcom’s interview establishes the design intent without requiring one single definitive reading.

Together, Kimberly and Manon show why “references” should not be reduced to hidden objects for longtime fans. SF6 uses cultural identity, personal history and setting as references too, giving new fighters a place in the same world as the veterans.

How to compare SF6 with earlier Street Fighter games

When you compare a classic fighter in SF6 with an older appearance, use four questions rather than relying on memory alone.

  1. Is the character playable? Separate a selectable fighter from a World Tour master, an NPC or a background appearance.
  2. What kind of reference is it? Identify whether the connection is a move, costume, stage, story location, character relationship or playable arcade cabinet.
  3. What was preserved? Compare the silhouette, signature attacks and personality cues that remain recognizable.
  4. What was modernized? Note changes to body design, clothing, animation, setting and life circumstances without assuming that every resemblance is an officially confirmed callback.

This method also prevents another common error: mixing the launch roster with downloadable content. If a fighter arrived later, label that timing instead of presenting the entire current roster as if it shipped on June 2, 2023.

Street Fighter’s historical and commercial context

A licensed Street Fighter figure-collection publication dates the franchise’s arcade beginning to 1987 and identifies Street Fighter II with 1991. Those dates provide useful orientation for readers who want to understand why SF6 treats the early World Warriors as cultural touchstones, but the publication is a merchandise source rather than a comprehensive scholarly history.

Capcom’s 2023 annual-report teaching document states: “Street Fighter 6 has sold more than 2 million units worldwide in the space of about one month since its release in June 2023.” That is a company-reported worldwide figure measured about one month after launch, not a current lifetime sales total. It does, however, show the scale of the audience for a game built around both modern competition and franchise history.

A practical route through SF6’s classic references

  • Start in Fighting Ground if you want to test a veteran’s current controls, tutorials and practice options.
  • Move to World Tour when you want character encounters, mentor relationships and a story-driven explanation of how styles are passed on.
  • Visit Battle Hub’s Game Center for playable links to Street Fighter II, Final Fight and other Capcom arcade traditions presented there.
  • Compare designs carefully. Look at physique, clothing, posture and setting, not only the face or color palette.
  • Separate documentation from speculation. Treat Capcom’s interviews and official mode descriptions as evidence; describe unconfirmed visual parallels as interpretation.
  • Check the edition and platform. The Standard Edition includes the launch modes described above, while later downloadable content and regional product listings can differ.

Street Fighter 6’s strongest historical trick is that it makes the past usable. Classic characters are modern competitors, World Tour masters and story figures; classic games are playable cabinets; and new fighters reinterpret the World Warriors idea through their own identities. The result is a game that acknowledges Street Fighter’s arcade roots without freezing its characters in 1991.
