Chun-Li’s Street Fighter 6 toolkit is built around a charged projectile, fast multi-hit kicks, a rising anti-air, and a stance that expands her combo routes. The essential commands are Kikoken ([4]6P), Hundred Lightning Kicks (236K), Spinning Bird Kick ([2]8K), Hazanshu (214K) and Tensho Kicks (623K). Her three Super Arts are Kikosho, Hoyoku-sen and Soten Ranka.

This guide uses Classic notation first, then lists Modern shortcuts, practical combo routes, charge requirements and the safest order in which to learn her tools.

Control types and notation

Street Fighter 6 has Classic, Modern and Dynamic control types. Classic uses the six-button layout and traditional directional motions. Modern replaces many motions with simpler button combinations. Dynamic is intended for quick offline play and is available only in certain Fighting Ground modes.

  • 5 = standing or neutral
  • 2 = crouching
  • 6 = forward
  • 4 = back
  • 8 = up
  • 236 = quarter-circle forward
  • 214 = quarter-circle back
  • 623 = dragon-punch motion
  • [4] or [2] = hold that direction to charge, then complete the motion

P means a Punch button and K means a Kick button. Light, Medium and Heavy select the strength of a move; OD (Overdrive) normally means pressing two buttons of the required type. Directional commands reverse when Chun-Li faces left, so a listed forward input becomes toward the opposite side of your controller.

Chun-Li special moves

Kikoken

Classic: charge back, then forward + Punch: [4]6P.

Kikoken is Chun-Li’s fireball. Punch strength changes its speed and travel behavior, letting you vary the timing at which it reaches the opponent. The critical execution detail is the charge: keep holding back while you wait, then press forward and Punch without releasing the charge early. You can build the charge during movement, attacks and blockstun, which is why experienced Chun-Li players often appear to be attacking while already preparing the next projectile.

Hundred Lightning Kicks

Classic: quarter-circle forward + Kick: 236K. The Kick button strength selects the version; OD uses two Kick buttons.

This is one of Chun-Li’s signature combo tools. The different strengths alter speed, reach and frame behavior, so choose the version that fits the distance and the route you are practicing. The move is also useful as a pressure ender when you want to keep the opponent standing or create a spacing situation rather than launch them.

Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks

Classic: perform 236K during a vertical or forward jump.

Because the input is performed in the air, the move can alter the timing of Chun-Li’s descent and make her jump-ins harder to anti-air cleanly. It is not a substitute for a grounded confirm: use it as an approach variation after you understand the jump arc and the opponent’s anti-air timing.

Spinning Bird Kick

Classic: charge down, then up + Kick: [2]8K.

Spinning Bird Kick is a core combo ender and an anti-air option. Hold down while poking or defending, then complete the up input with the appropriate Kick. The OD version enables stronger follow-up routes, which is why many practical Chun-Li combos spend Drive Gauge on OD Spinning Bird Kick before adding additional attacks.

A common execution error is trying to perform the move from a crouching normal without first holding down long enough. If Chun-Li jumps or gets hit instead of spinning, return to training mode and deliberately hold 2 during the preceding attack before pressing 8 plus Kick.

Hazanshu

Classic: quarter-circle back + Kick: 214K.

Hazanshu moves Chun-Li forward and functions as an overhead-style approach attack. Its version changes speed and frame properties, so it can be used to vary when she arrives rather than always attacking at the same timing. Treat it as a movement and mix-up option, not an automatic way through defense: opponents can react to predictable versions or punish it when used from the wrong range.

Tensho Kicks

Classic: dragon-punch motion + Kick: 623K.

Tensho Kicks rises into the air and is one of Chun-Li’s most important anti-air specials. It also serves as a frequent combo ender when the opponent is already airborne or has been lifted by a preceding attack. The input is sensitive to the forward, down and diagonal portions of the motion; entering 623 cleanly is more reliable than repeatedly tapping directions.

Serenity Stream

Serenity Stream is Chun-Li’s stance. In Classic notation, the stance entry is shown with a quarter-circle-back Kick command. Once she is in the stance, attack buttons select follow-ups that form the basis of advanced confirms, Drive Rush extensions and stance-specific pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Command labels for the stance entry and its follow-ups have been refined across game updates, and move context can distinguish Serenity Stream from Hazanshu in the in-game list. Open Fighting Ground → Training → Pause Menu → Command List and check the current labels for your version before memorizing a route. Learn the stance only after your basic normal-to-special confirm works consistently; otherwise, the extra branches make it harder to diagnose missed charges and dropped inputs.

Modern control shortcuts

Modern controls keep Chun-Li’s complete strategic identity but replace several motion inputs with directional-and-button shortcuts. Capcom describes the system as allowing special attacks with simple button combinations. The current Chun-Li command reference lists these shortcuts:

Move Modern command Practical note
Hundred Lightning Kicks Neutral + Special Use the directionless shortcut when you need the move immediately.
Tensho Kicks Forward + Special Provides the rising anti-air without a dragon-punch motion.
Kikoken Back + Special while charging Keep the charge held before pressing the shortcut.
Hazanshu Down + Special Creates the forward-moving overhead-style approach.
Aerial Hundred Lightning Kicks Special during a vertical or forward jump Input the button while airborne.

Modern does not remove the need to understand spacing, charge timing or hit confirmation. It mainly reduces execution demands. Classic retains the full motion-input precision, while Modern can restrict which normal attacks or command choices are available through its simplified layout. No current numerical Modern damage penalty is specified in the current command reference, so do not rely on an assumed percentage; compare the routes and options available in your game version.

Chun-Li’s Super Arts

Level Name Classic input Modern input Typical use
1 Kikosho 236236P Neutral or Forward + Special + Heavy Fast Super Art used to convert confirmed hits or punish openings.
2 Hoyoku-sen 236236K Back + Special + Heavy Multi-hit Super Art for larger conversions and pressure-ending routes.
3 / Critical Art Soten Ranka 214214K Down + Special + Heavy Chun-Li’s highest-level Super Art, available as her Critical Art when the game’s conditions are met.

Kikosho

Kikosho uses the double quarter-circle-forward motion in Classic controls. Save it for a confirmed hit, a guaranteed punish or a route that has been rehearsed, rather than buffering it randomly and spending Super meter on a blocked attack.

Hoyoku-sen

Hoyoku-sen uses the same double-forward motion with Kick buttons. Its multi-hit sequence makes it a natural ender when your combo route already keeps the opponent in place.

Soten Ranka

Soten Ranka is the Level 3 Super and Critical Art. The Classic command is double quarter-circle back plus Kick. Because it consumes the largest resource investment, confirm the opening before committing and practice the cancel timing in Combo Trials.

Basic Chun-Li combos: a learning path

1. Build a reliable normal confirm

Start with st.MP > cr.MP. Practice recognizing whether the medium-punch sequence hits before committing to the special move. When the required down charge is available, finish with Spinning Bird Kick: st.MP > cr.MP > [2]8K. This teaches the central Chun-Li skill of maintaining a charge while pressing normals.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

If you cannot hold down during the first attack without losing the confirm, slow the drill down. The objective is not maximum damage; it is producing the same sequence on hit and blocking safely when the second normal does not connect.

2. Add an OD extension

A published SF6 Lab route is:

st.MP > cr.MP > OD Spinning Bird Kick > Light Hundred Lightning Kicks > Heavy Tensho Kicks

The route demonstrates why OD Spinning Bird Kick matters. It gives Chun-Li a stronger conversion, after which Light Hundred Lightning Kicks continues the sequence and Heavy Tensho Kicks closes it. Learn the spacing and timing in training mode before trying to improvise the follow-up; the final Tensho input must be entered while the opponent is still in the route’s juggle window.

3. Add Drive Rush and Serenity Stream only after the confirm is stable

Advanced SF6 Lab routes use Drive Rush or Serenity Stream, sometimes adding OD Kikoken before returning to a normal and ending with Spinning Bird Kick. These routes can improve damage, corner carry or resource conversion, but they add more decisions and more chances to lose a charge.

  1. Perform st.MP > cr.MP ten times without dropping the normal confirm.
  2. Repeat it while holding down long enough to produce Spinning Bird Kick.
  3. Add the OD version and verify that the follow-up connects from the same spacing.
  4. Only then insert Drive Rush or a Serenity Stream entry.
  5. Record the dummy blocking randomly and confirm that you spend Drive Gauge only after a real hit.

4. Reserve Super cancels for confirmed hits

Super cancels are resource-aware enders, not neutral pokes. In Combo Trials, practice the exact cancel window from the normal or special that starts your route. In a match, use the cancel only after you have confirmed contact or have a guaranteed punish; a blocked Super attempt can waste meter and leave Chun-Li exposed.

Classic or Modern: which should you choose?

Consideration Classic Modern
Execution Requires charge, quarter-circle and dragon-punch motions. Uses directional shortcuts for many specials and Super Arts.
Command precision Full traditional command set and six-button layout. Simpler inputs, with command and normal-selection limits determined by the Modern layout.
Damage trade-off No special numerical adjustment is specified here. No current authoritative numerical penalty is specified here; evaluate the actual route and patch version.
Availability Standard control type across regular play. Standard control type; Dynamic is the separate mode limited to certain offline Fighting Ground modes.

Choose Classic if you want complete motion-input control and plan to use every normal and stance branch. Choose Modern if charge management and motion execution are stopping you from learning fundamentals. Either way, the correct first milestone is one dependable normal confirm, not an elaborate stance combo.

Practice checklist and troubleshooting

  • Kikoken fails: hold back longer before pressing forward and Punch; do not release the charge during the normal that precedes it.
  • Spinning Bird Kick fails: hold down before the attack, then complete up plus Kick. A late or missing down charge is the usual cause.
  • Tensho Kicks fails: slow the 623 motion and make sure the forward direction is entered before the Kick button.
  • Aerial Lightning Kicks misses: use a vertical or forward jump and input 236K after Chun-Li leaves the ground.
  • Serenity Stream follow-up is wrong: open the current in-game Command List and verify the stance-specific button labels for your patch.
  • Combo drops after Drive Rush: practice the route without Drive Rush, then add it at a deliberately slower pace so the normal’s cancel timing becomes consistent.
  • Inputs appear backward: remember that forward and back depend on which side Chun-Li is facing.

Where to learn the routes in-game

Use Fighting Ground → Training to display inputs, record the dummy, and test whether a route works from the spacing you actually use. The official Combo Trial mode is specifically designed to teach practical combos for real fights. Start with Chun-Li’s basic trials, then test the normal-confirm and OD Spinning Bird Kick routes against a blocking dummy before adding Drive Gauge or Super resources.

For move names, button assignments and any changes introduced by a patch, open the in-game Command List rather than relying on an old video. This is especially important for Serenity Stream follow-ups and Modern command labels.
