Start with Modern controls in World Tour or the Fighting Ground Tutorial unless you already know fighting-game motion inputs. Modern removes the initial memorization barrier, while World Tour teaches the vocabulary of Street Fighter 6 at a forgiving pace. After you can move, block and perform one or two specials reliably, use Training, then Arcade or local Versus, and only afterward move into Battle Hub or Ranked.

This route matters more than learning a long combo immediately. Your first goals are a dependable normal attack, an anti-air, one special move, one defensive response and an understanding of the six-stock Drive Gauge.

Which Street Fighter 6 controls should a beginner use?

Street Fighter 6 has three control schemes: Classic, Modern and Dynamic. Capcom describes Modern as a way to perform special attacks with simple button combinations rather than memorizing traditional inputs. Classic keeps the familiar six-button layout and command motions. Dynamic is a quick, casual option for offline play in selected Fighting Ground modes.

Control type What it does Good starting use Important trade-off
Modern Uses a Special Move button plus a directional input for immediate access to specials; Assist can enable simple combos. Players new to fighting games, motion inputs or six-button layouts. The simplified layout does not represent every traditional input or the complete move access of Classic. You can transition later.
Classic Uses the traditional six-button layout and command inputs. Players who already understand quarter-circle, charge or dragon-punch motions, or who want the traditional control language from the beginning. Directional commands require deliberate practice before they become consistent.
Dynamic Provides a quick, casual control option. Short couch sessions or sampling a character offline. Availability is restricted to certain offline Fighting Ground modes, so it is not the general path for online learning.

Why Modern is a legitimate starting point

Modern is not a trial mode or a temporary handicap. It is one of the game’s designed control options. Pressing the Special Move button with a direction gives you a direct way to test what a character’s specials do, and Assist can help you experience simple combo structure before you know the full command language.

CAPCOM Street Fighter 6 (PS5)
  • Stunning visuals and an all new battle system depicts the world of Street Fighter with unprecedented detail.
  • For the first time ever, SF6 provides an ever evolving immersive storytelling experience that gives power to the player to create their own World Warrior and truly engage in the Street Fighter Universe
  • SF6 provides the gold standard fighting experience for both casual and battle-tested pros can enjoy for years to come.
  • Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the international version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions. DLC content may not work unless using an EU Playstation account as stated this is an EU Import Region Free Version

That accessibility lets you concentrate on spacing, blocking and the Drive System instead of failing the same motion repeatedly. If your eventual goal is Classic, use Modern to learn when a move is useful, then spend dedicated Training sessions reproducing the move with its traditional input.

When Classic makes sense immediately

Choose Classic on day one if you already play traditional fighting games or can comfortably perform quarter-circle, charge and dragon-punch motions. Starting with the layout you intend to keep avoids relearning button positions later. Classic is available in Fighting Ground, Battle Hub and World Tour, so it supports both offline practice and online matches.

Where Dynamic fits

Dynamic is best treated as a fast local-play option rather than a learning plan. Its restricted availability means you cannot use it as the universal control scheme while progressing through every mode or preparing for online play.

Your first 30 minutes: a small skill list

Do not begin by trying to memorize an entire command list. Pick one character and write down only four items:

  • A dependable normal attack: a button you can press safely when standing at close range.
  • An anti-air option: an attack or special you can use when an opponent jumps toward you.
  • One special move: your first reliable way to extend reach, apply pressure or punish a mistake.
  • One defensive response: blocking first; later you can add a Drive technique or a way to escape the corner.

This list is deliberately small. You are building decisions that occur in a real match, not collecting move names. Add a second special only after the first works consistently from both sides of the screen.

How to learn special moves without overload

Modern controls

  1. Enter Training and select your character.
  2. Press the Special Move button from a neutral standing position to see the default version.
  3. Repeat the button with each available direction. Direction changes the move or its version, so test forward, back, down and neutral deliberately.
  4. Use the attack button that changes the strength or version when the character’s layout provides that choice.
  5. After the move works from both sides, connect it after your chosen normal attack.

Use Assist only as a teaching aid. First learn what the assisted sequence does; then release Assist and confirm that you can still perform the individual special you actually need.

Classic controls

  1. Read the command for your chosen special and identify whether it is a quarter-circle, charge, dragon-punch or another motion.
  2. Perform the directional motion slowly without pressing an attack button. This separates the movement error from the button error.
  3. Add the required punch or kick at the end of the motion.
  4. Repeat from a neutral stand on the left side of the screen, then change sides and repeat.
  5. Link the special after your dependable normal attack only when the raw motion succeeds consistently.

Turn on input display in Training. If the move fails, the displayed directions show whether you skipped a direction, pressed too early or used the wrong attack button. Correct one error at a time instead of speeding up immediately.

  • Chun-Li: Tensho Kicks and Serenity Stream have distinct functions and require you to learn the circumstance in which each belongs in your game plan.
  • Luke: Flash Knuckle has follow-ups, making timing and the available continuation part of the lesson.
  • Jamie: Some attacks depend on Drink Level, so your move choices change as that condition changes.

Write a one-line purpose beside the move in your notes: for example, “anti-air,” “safe approach,” “punish” or “resource-dependent.” That note is more useful in a match than a long list of command names.

The best mode progression for a new player

1. World Tour: the gentlest first stop

World Tour lets you create an avatar, meet Masters, enroll in their styles and complete missions while learning Special Moves. You can study several characters in a low-pressure environment and repeat lessons without the immediate pressure of a human opponent.

Use it to learn the game’s vocabulary: normal attacks, specials, blocking, Masters and the idea that a character’s move set has a purpose. Do not wait until you have completed every mission. Leave when you can identify your four-item starter list and understand the basic controls.

2. Fighting Ground Tutorial and Character Guide

Fighting Ground is the practice hub. Its Tutorial teaches universal system rules, while Character Guide explains a selected fighter’s basic plan. Capcom specifically presents Tutorial and Character Guide as places to learn mechanics and practice characters such as Luke and Ryu.

Work through the lessons actively. After each explanation, reproduce the action yourself, then try it once from the opposite side of the screen. If you cannot repeat it, pause your progression and use Training rather than guessing in a match.

3. Training: turn instructions into muscle memory

Training is where you test whether a lesson survives outside a demonstration. Set up the following sequence:

  1. Perform your chosen normal attack ten times without moving.
  2. Perform your anti-air response against a recorded or stationary jump scenario.
  3. Execute your first special from both sides of the screen.
  4. Connect the normal attack into the special.
  5. Practice a simple punish and an escape from the corner.
  6. Watch the input display after every failed attempt and identify the exact missing direction or button.

Keep the session focused. Add a second special or a longer combo only after the first sequence works under light pressure.

4. Arcade or local Versus: practice decisions

Arcade gives you short CPU matches, character stories and score records. Local Versus lets you repeat situations with a friend. These modes test movement, blocking and confirming one special when an opponent is actually acting.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

Use a narrow objective for each set: stay grounded and block, anti-air every jump you notice, or confirm your normal into the special. You are measuring whether you recognize an opportunity, not whether you can win every round.

5. Battle Hub and Ranked: go online in stages

Battle Hub combines avatar battles with social play, so it can be a lower-commitment introduction to human opponents. Ranked provides structured matches and League Points. Enter either only after you can perform your basic special on both sides and can tell what your Drive Gauge is doing.

Expect online opponents to expose gaps that CPU matches do not. Return to Training with a specific problem—missed anti-airs, unsafe attacks or corner escapes—rather than changing characters after every loss.

Learn the Drive System before chasing long combos

The Drive System is central to every match. It contains five techniques powered by a gauge with six Drive Stocks. The important beginner lesson is resource awareness: spending stocks changes what options remain available, and exhausting the gauge causes Burnout.

Session 1: recognize Drive Impact

Practice identifying Drive Impact and responding without freezing. You do not need a full counter strategy yet; first learn what the visual and timing cue looks like and how your character reacts.

Session 2: practice Drive Parry

Next, rehearse Drive Parry in a controlled situation. Focus on the timing and on noticing how using a Drive technique affects your remaining stocks.

Session 3: watch the six-stock gauge

Play a short match while deliberately checking the gauge after every Drive action. Ask whether the expenditure created a real advantage or merely made the move look impressive. This habit prevents accidental resource starvation.

Understand Burnout

Burnout is the vulnerable state caused by exhausting the Drive Gauge. It is not simply a visual warning; it changes the risk of continuing to spend Drive resources. Beginners should learn to stop spending automatically when the gauge is low and to value blocking and positioning until recovery is possible.

A practical control-and-mode decision framework

If your priority is… Choose… Then do this
Getting a special move on screen quickly Modern Use the Special Move button with each direction, then practice without Assist.
Learning traditional motion inputs Classic Practice the directional command slowly, add the punch or kick, and repeat on both sides.
A brief offline session Dynamic Use it in the Fighting Ground modes where it is available, without treating it as your online scheme.
Low-pressure repetition World Tour Study Masters, learn Special Moves and complete missions until your four-item starter list is familiar.
Understanding universal rules Fighting Ground Tutorial Learn the system lessons, then verify each one in Training.
Learning a character’s plan Character Guide Study the guide for one fighter and immediately practice its examples.
Testing skills against people Battle Hub or Ranked Wait until movement, blocking, one or two specials and Drive Gauge awareness are reliable.

Common beginner problems and precise fixes

“My special works on one side but not the other.”

Switch sides in Training and slow the directional motion down. On Classic, watch the input display for a missing direction. On Modern, verify that you are pressing the intended direction with the Special Move button rather than relying on a remembered button sequence.

“I know the move, but I never use it in matches.”

Assign the move one job. Start with an anti-air, punish or approach rather than trying to use it everywhere. Play an Arcade or local Versus set whose only objective is to look for that one situation.

“I keep losing after spending Drive.”

Check the six-stock gauge before every Drive action. If repeated spending leaves you in Burnout, reserve the resource for a clear defensive or offensive purpose and practice ordinary movement and blocking while the gauge is low.

“Long combos are overwhelming.”

Return to the four-item list. A dependable normal, anti-air, single special and defensive response create a usable foundation. Expand only when those actions work from both sides of the screen under match pressure.

“Online matches feel much harder than practice.”

That is a signal to narrow the problem, not to memorize more moves. Record whether the loss came from missed movement, failure to block, a missed anti-air, an unreliable special or poor Drive spending. Fix that one category in Training, then test it again in a short set.

When to change from Modern to Classic

Change controls for a specific reason: you want the traditional command language, need access to options represented only by Classic, or are ready to invest in deliberate motion practice. Make the switch in Training first. Recreate your four-item starter list, perform each special from both sides and then play Arcade or local Versus before returning online.

There is no requirement to abandon Modern. If it lets you make sound decisions and enjoy matches, it remains a valid long-term choice. The useful test is consistency and understanding, not whether your control label matches someone else’s.

A repeatable weekly practice plan

  1. World Tour or Tutorial session: learn one rule, Master style or character concept.
  2. Special-move session: perform one special from both sides and connect it after a normal attack.
  3. Defense session: block, practice an anti-air and rehearse one corner escape.
  4. Drive session: focus on one technique, then observe how spending affects the six-stock gauge.
  5. Match session: play Arcade, local Versus or Battle Hub with one measurable objective.
  6. Review session: return to Training for the single mistake that appeared most often.

This cycle keeps learning attached to actual decisions. It also prevents the common trap of spending all your time in a command list without ever testing movement, defense or resource management.
