Choose Modern controls if motion inputs are your main obstacle; choose Classic if you want the full six-button layout and traditional commands from the start. Dynamic controls are useful only for a limited offline introduction. Whichever scheme you use, build combos in small, repeatable steps with Input History Display rather than trying to memorize long damage routes immediately.

Street Fighter 6 control schemes at a glance

Street Fighter 6 has three control schemes. The choice changes how attacks and special moves are entered, but it does not change the basic objective: recognize a situation, choose a reliable response, and execute it consistently.

Scheme How it works Where it is available Best starting use
Classic The traditional six-button layout with separate light, medium and heavy punches and kicks. Special moves use directional motion inputs. Fighting Ground and World Tour Players who want the complete Street Fighter vocabulary and are willing to practice motion inputs.
Modern Uses simplified attack buttons and a Special button, with assisted combinations for many special attacks. The exact button assignment depends on the platform and any remapping. Fighting Ground and World Tour New players whose main barrier is remembering or performing motion commands.
Dynamic Provides a highly simplified, context-sensitive control style intended for very casual play. Only certain offline Fighting Ground modes A short introduction for someone unfamiliar with fighting games, not a route to online learning.

Classic and Modern are the practical choices for a player who intends to learn the game seriously. Dynamic can help someone understand spacing, blocking and the rhythm of a round, but its restricted offline availability means it cannot be your complete online-training scheme.

Set up and verify your battle controls

Do not assume that a button name means the same physical button on every platform. Street Fighter 6 displays labels for the controller you are using, and custom mappings can change the defaults.

  1. Open the Multi Menu.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Open Battle to view and change the control mapping.
  4. Press each displayed button once and note which physical input the game recognizes.
  5. If you are following a guide, translate its labels into the names shown on your own control screen before practicing.

The official manual documents the default battle layouts and confirms that they can be remapped. Treat the in-game Battle screen as the final authority after any custom changes.

Classic button vocabulary

Classic notation normally names the six attacks as LP, MP, HP, LK, MK and HK:

  • LP: light punch
  • MP: medium punch
  • HP: heavy punch
  • LK: light kick
  • MK: medium kick
  • HK: heavy kick

Those abbreviations describe attack strength, not a particular controller button. A remap can put an attack on a different physical button while it remains, for example, MP in a guide.

Modern button vocabulary

Modern controls present prompts such as Light, Medium, Heavy, Special and Assist, plus directional inputs. Follow the labels visible in your control settings and in the command display. Because platform layouts and custom mappings differ, a guide should not be interpreted as a universal list of physical buttons.

Reading directional notation

Classic combo guides often use numpad notation. Imagine the numbers on a computer keyboard’s numeric keypad while your character faces right:

Notation Direction
2 Down
5 Neutral
6 Toward the opponent
4 Away from the opponent
8 Up
1, 3, 7, 9 Diagonal directions

The numbers are relative to your character. If you switch sides, “toward” changes from right to left, so a command written as 236 must be performed in the opposite physical direction after the crossover. This is why side-switch practice is essential.

A sequence such as 2MK > 236P means crouching medium kick followed by a quarter-circle-forward motion and a punch. The greater-than sign indicates the order of the actions; it is not a button. A notation such as 5MP means standing medium punch, while 2MP means crouching medium punch.

Which control scheme should a beginner use?

Choose Modern when execution is blocking learning

Capcom describes Modern as allowing special attacks through simple button combinations for players who do not want to memorize traditional commands. PlayStation also presents it as an entry point for people with little fighting-game experience. That makes Modern a sensible first choice when you understand what you want to do but lose rounds because a quarter-circle, charge or dragon-punch motion does not come out.

Modern does not remove the need to learn fundamentals. You still have to move, block, anti-air, recognize punish opportunities and manage Drive resources. The simplified input is valuable because it lets you practice those decisions before execution becomes the bottleneck.

Choose Classic for the complete traditional toolkit

Classic gives you the full six-button vocabulary and traditional motion inputs from the beginning. It requires more deliberate practice, so make consistency the first target rather than speed or maximum damage. Learning a small number of commands cleanly is more useful than attempting a long combo that works only when the opponent stands still and you are on one side.

Use Dynamic only as a short offline introduction

Dynamic is restricted to certain offline Fighting Ground modes. It can make a first session less intimidating, but it does not provide a complete path for online practice. Move to Modern or Classic once you want your training, replays and matches to use a control scheme available throughout the game.

Prepare Training Mode before practicing combos

Training Mode is where you turn an unfamiliar sequence into a repeatable response. Street Fighter 6 also provides Character Guides and character-specific combo trials, so you do not need to invent every route yourself.

  1. Enter Training Mode with the character you want to learn.
  2. Enable Input History Display. This shows the directional and button inputs the game actually registered, not what you intended to press.
  3. Open Simple Training Settings if you want a quick setup instead of changing every dummy option individually.
  4. Set the dummy to the position and behavior needed for the current drill.
  5. Stand at a known distance before each attempt. A combo that begins only at one spacing should be labeled as such in your notes.

Use Character Guides to learn the purpose of a normal, special or defensive option, then use combo trials to see routes that the game recognizes for that fighter. Trials are a starting library, not a promise that every route is optimal in every match.

A practical combo ladder

Learn one character at a time and work through the situations below. These are categories rather than universal commands: every character has different normals, special moves and valid enders. Use the chosen fighter’s Character Guide and combo trials to fill in the exact attacks.

1. Light confirm

Start with two or three light attacks and finish with the character’s easiest special move or target-combo ender. The purpose is to recognize a close hit and convert it without hesitation. Begin with a stationary dummy. Once the sequence is stable, set the dummy to block randomly and practice stopping safely when the first light is blocked.

Keep the route short. A light confirm that works under pressure is more valuable than a longer route that requires a perfect timing window.

2. Medium punish

Choose a standing or crouching medium starter and connect it into a special move. This teaches the basic rhythm of buffering a special during the recovery of a normal. Practice from the range at which the medium attack actually reaches; do not learn a route from an artificial point-blank position if the move is normally used farther away.

3. Crouching-medium cancel

Practice cancelling a crouching medium normal into the same special from both player sides. Start slowly enough to see the input history. The desired pattern is a clean normal input followed by the complete special motion and attack button, without an unintended jump, diagonal or extra normal.

Street Fighter 6 - PS5
  • Classic Experience Built for a Modern Era: With all core gameplay modes present, plus two brand new modes and enhanced visuals, Street Fighter 6 redefines the classic fighting game genre.
  • Distinct Fighting Styles to Master: 18 diverse characters including legendary World Warriors and exciting brand new characters add their own flair to the game at launch, with more to be added post-launch.
  • Brand New Game Modes: The Street Fighter franchise continues to hone its skills and redefine the fighting genre with the introduction of three new foundational modes – Fighting Ground, World Tour and Battle Hub.
  • In-Game Commentating: Street Fighter’s first-ever Real-Time Commentary Feature, supported with subtitles in 13 languages, incorporates the voices of popular Fighting Game Community (FGC) commentators like Vicious and Aru directly into the game to narrate what is happening on-screen just like a real tournament.
  • Two New Control Schemes: Classic Controls returns alongside two brand new options: Modern Controls allow you to perform special attacks with simple button combinations and are designed for players who want to fight without memorizing and practicing special move button combinations first. Dynamic Controls only require a press of the Auto-Attack button to perform attacks and is a great control type to use when you have friends and family over for a quick, casual game.

4. Anti-air follow-up

Record the dummy jumping toward you and use the character’s designated anti-air normal or special. If that anti-air permits a follow-up, add the simplest reliable ender. First prove that you can stop the jump consistently; only then add the extra attack. A missed anti-air usually costs more than a missed extension, so defensive recognition comes first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Drive Impact punish

Record a blocked or whiffed Drive Impact and practice the shortest reliable punish. Once that route is automatic, test a higher-damage extension that uses more Drive Gauge or a tighter timing window. The short route is your match-ready option when the visual reaction is late or the position is awkward.

6. Super finish

Add a Super Art only after the non-super route repeats reliably. A super version may require a second motion, a different cancel window or enough meter at the moment of contact. Drill the ordinary ender first so you do not sacrifice a confirmed punish while looking for damage that is unavailable.

The ten-and-ten practice routine

A simple count keeps practice measurable without pretending that everyone needs the same amount of time.

  1. Turn on Input History Display and choose Simple Training Settings when you want a fast setup.
  2. Perform the route ten times from the player-one side. Count only clean completions, not attempts that required improvisation.
  3. Switch sides and perform it ten times again. Treat the mirrored motion as a separate skill.
  4. Add a realistic trigger: record an attack to punish, record a jump to anti-air, or require yourself to confirm only after a hit.
  5. Keep the shortest route that succeeds consistently. Add damage, Drive Gauge use or a Super Art in a later session.
  6. Revisit the character’s combo trials after game patches. Move properties and recommended routes can change, so a previously familiar sequence may need adjustment.

If a route fails repeatedly, reduce the task instead of forcing more speed. Practice the normal by itself, then the special motion from neutral, then the cancel. Recombine the pieces only when the input history shows the intended pattern.

Use Input History to diagnose dropped combos

The special move does not appear

Check whether the directional sequence is complete and whether the attack button is pressed during the permitted cancel window. If the history shows only part of the motion, slow down and exaggerate the direction changes. If the motion is correct but the move still fails, verify that the attack button is the one assigned to the intended strength on your current control screen.

Your character jumps during a motion

An up input was registered before the attack button. This commonly happens when a player rushes a diagonal or rolls the stick too far. Repeat the motion with a smaller, deliberate arc and watch for the unwanted 8, 7 or 9 in the history.

The normal comes out instead of the special

The special input may be late, incomplete or outside the cancel window. First perform the special from neutral until it is reliable. Then perform the normal and input the motion during its animation, rather than waiting to see the hit before beginning the motion.

The combo works on one side only

Do not memorize the physical direction as “right” or “left.” Memorize the relative command, such as toward, down and toward. Repeat the ten attempts on the opposite side and use the history to confirm that the mirrored motion is being registered.

The target combo stops unexpectedly

Confirm that you are using the correct attack strength and that the first hit connected at the required distance. Some target-combo branches depend on the exact normal or timing. Return to the Character Guide or combo trial for the character-specific sequence instead of substituting a button from another route.

Turn isolated combos into match decisions

A combo is useful only when you can identify its trigger. Build a small decision tree around the routes you have practiced:

  • Close hit: attempt the light confirm when the first light attack connects.
  • Blocked light: stop or use the character’s safe follow-up rather than completing a punish-only route.
  • Medium punish: use the medium starter after a move that leaves the opponent punishable.
  • Jump-in: anti-air first; do not replace a reliable anti-air with a combo you cannot reach in time.
  • Drive Impact opening: use the short punish route until the situation is stable, then choose the extension only when spacing and resources permit.

This approach prevents a common beginner mistake: practicing a combo as a sequence of buttons without learning when the first button is justified.

Common beginner mistakes and corrections

Chasing maximum damage too early

High-damage routes often consume Drive Gauge, require a narrow cancel, or end with a Super Art. Keep a lower-risk route for neutral hits and punish situations. Upgrade it only after the basic version is dependable.

Practicing only from player one

Side switching changes the physical direction of every relative motion. Include both sides in every session so the skill is not tied to one corner of the screen.

Ignoring spacing

A combo can be valid at point blank yet fail when the starter hits at its normal range. Practice at the distance where you expect to use the starter and record that condition in your notes.

Pressing faster instead of more accurately

Speed cannot repair a missing direction or a button pressed outside the cancel window. Watch Input History, identify the first incorrect entry, and correct that single part before accelerating.

Changing characters before learning a basic response

Every character has different normals, special moves and enders. Stay with one fighter long enough to establish a light confirm, medium punish, anti-air response and Drive Impact punish before starting a second moveset.

When to move from Modern to Classic

There is no requirement to switch. Modern is a valid control scheme for continuing to learn movement, defense, spacing and matchup decisions. Consider Classic when you specifically want access to the traditional six-button vocabulary or when you are ready to practice motion inputs as part of your long-term execution.

If you switch, rebuild the same situation categories rather than trying to transfer every Modern shortcut at once. Find the Classic versions of your light confirm, medium punish and anti-air, then repeat the side-switch and recorded-trigger drills. The goal is to preserve your decisions while changing the input method.

What this guide can and cannot promise

Control choice and practice tools can make execution easier to study, but they do not guarantee a win rate, a specific improvement speed or a fixed amount of practice time. Street Fighter 6’s official materials document the available schemes, mappings, Input History Display, Character Guides, combo trials and training settings; they do not establish a universal adoption rate, average beginner schedule or guaranteed result.
