Verdict: Kitao Sakurai’s 2026 Street Fighter is a loud, crowded and occasionally kinetic piece of video-game cosplay that mistakes a roster for a story. The fights, costumes and 1990s soundtrack jokes may entertain devoted fans, but a tangled script, clipped editing and an ending without a genuine finale earn the film one star out of four in Associated Press critic Jake Coyle’s review.

What the 2026 Street Fighter movie is about

Paramount Pictures’ theatrical release opens Friday, according to the Associated Press review published October 15, 2026. Kitao Sakurai directs and co-writes with T.J. Fixman. The story starts with an anime-style 1987 flashback: the death of Ken and Ryu’s master drives the two students apart. The film then jumps to 1993 and the World Warrior Tournament.

The tournament assembles Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Blanka, Guile, Balrog, M. Bison, Akuma, Vega and numerous additional fighters. Bison, presented as a fascist dictator, wants to expand his power by using Ryu’s. That premise supplies a villain and a threat, but the movie repeatedly loses track of which fighters matter most.

Cast and character focus

Character Actor
Ken Noah Centineo
Ryu Andrew Koji
Chun-Li Callina Liang
Blanka Jason Momoa
Guile Cody Rhodes
Balrog Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson
M. Bison David Dastmalchian
Akuma Roman Reigns
Vega Orville Peck

Liang is the most kinetic performer in Coyle’s assessment, while Dastmalchian works to inject comic energy into Bison. Professional wrestlers Rhodes and Reigns bring recognizable physical presence, and masked musician Peck’s casting as Vega functions as a meta joke for fans. The ensemble’s recognizability is often more developed than its relationships.

Why the movie feels overstuffed

Sakurai stages scenes as if they are fights, giving entrances, poses and confrontations an immediate pulse. Yet the screenplay spends surprisingly little time making the tournament itself legible. Testosterone-heavy side drama repeatedly displaces the matches and rivalries that should form the film’s spine.

As the final stretch arrives, dialogue becomes clipped, transitions feel abruptly assembled and the pacing grows harder to follow. Coyle describes considerable post-production cutting and pasting. The film reaches optimistic sequel bait without delivering a satisfying finale; the closing impression is interruption rather than resolution. His summary is blunt: “That’s a fair reaction to Sakurai’s very enthusiastic, weirdly convoluted and jumbled mess of a movie.”

Funny-bad, nostalgic or simply bad?

The intended experience is a knowingly—or at least semi-knowingly—silly throwback. Songs such as “Who Let the Dogs Out?” and “2 Legit 2 Quit” push the film toward kitschy 1990s nostalgia, while the costumes and exaggerated performances recall the era when game adaptations openly looked like actors cosplaying their characters.

That tone can work if you enjoy ensemble spectacle, broad jokes and the pleasure of spotting a favorite fighter. It is less likely to work if you want jokes to emerge from coherent character writing. The movie’s camp is inconsistent: some moments seem deliberately ridiculous, while others appear to be asking for sincere investment in a plot that has not earned it.

How it compares with the 1994 film

The new movie feels perilously close to the 1994 Street Fighter, according to the AP review. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the 1994 film at 20% on the Tomatometer from 90 reviews and a 20% audience score. That film’s synopsis centers on Gen. Bison kidnapping relief workers and Col. Guile leading an international force to rescue them. Its runtime is 1 hour 42 minutes, and it is rated PG-13.

Comparison 1994 film 2026 film
Story focus A rescue mission led by Guile; critics called the story predictable and uneven. A tournament and the fractured Ken–Ryu relationship, but priorities keep shifting.
Use of game characters Recognizable names shaped around a military adventure. A larger roster foregrounded through costumes, cameos and rivalries.
Action Nonstop action that critics said could not overcome the plot. Energetic fights undermined by clipped editing and confusing transitions.
Tone Campy one-liners and Raul Julia’s overacting provide the main amusement. 1990s music jokes, wrestling-star casting and cosplay-like exaggeration.
Nostalgia value A period artifact of early game adaptations. A deliberate return to that campy adaptation tradition.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus says the 1994 film gets “mild entertainment through campy one-liners and the overacting of the late Raul Julia,” but that its action cannot compensate for a “predictable, uneven storyline.” The 2026 film updates the roster and visual energy without clearly solving the underlying story problem.

Coyle’s final judgment is one star out of four, ending with the exasperated instruction: “Guys, stop fighting.” That captures the film’s central failure: it has plenty of fighters, but not enough narrative control to make their battles matter.
