Streaming’s reach depends on what you measure. In the U.S., streaming accounted for 48.6% of television watch-time in May 2026; in a separate U.S. survey, half of consumers said they listened to music streaming services daily. Neither figure is a count of everyone who subscribes. The statistics below keep viewing share, survey responses, paid subscriptions, company audiences and global revenue in their own contexts—because they answer different questions.
How much of U.S. TV viewing is streaming?
Nielsen’s May 2026 figures measure share of total U.S. TV watch-time, not the share of people with a subscription. Its Gauge includes ad-supported and non-ad-supported viewing, and Nielsen says it is not the currency TV rating used for advertising sales.
| Measure | May 2026 figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Streaming share of total U.S. TV watch-time | 48.6%, up 1.0 percentage point | All streaming viewing as a share of total TV use in Nielsen’s measure. |
| YouTube share of total U.S. TV watch-time | 13.8% | A platform best in Nielsen’s report and the largest distributor share cited there. |
| Netflix share of total U.S. TV usage | 8.0% | A distributor share, not Netflix’s share of streaming-only viewing. |
| Prime Video share of total U.S. TV usage | 4.5% | A best-to-date share for the service in Nielsen’s report. |
| Roku Channel share of total U.S. TV usage | 3.1% | A platform best in Nielsen’s report. |
The distributor percentages use total TV usage as their denominator. They should not be read as paid-subscriber counts or compared with a streaming-only market-share calculation.

What drove notable Prime Video viewing?
Nielsen reported that the final episodes of The Boys generated 5 billion Prime Video viewing minutes in May 2026. Prime Video’s 20 live sports events that month generated 7.5 billion combined viewing minutes. These are viewing-minute totals for distinct programming, not service-wide audience shares.

How often do people listen to music streaming?
MusicWatch’s survey for the Digital Media Association (DIMA) found that 50% of U.S. consumers said they listened to streaming services every day. Among paid subscribers, the daily-listening figure was 58%. These are self-reported survey responses, not listening measurements from devices or platforms.
The U.S. study surveyed 3,555 people ages 13–70. Fieldwork ran from December 21, 2025, to February 2, 2026; results were weighted to represent the U.S. internet-using population by age, gender, ethnicity, income and region. Parallel studies surveyed 1,000 people ages 18–70 in each of Canada, Brazil, Chile and Mexico, with fieldwork from December 17, 2025, to January 29, 2026. The findings below are U.S. results unless stated otherwise.

How much do U.S. streamers spend on recorded music?
MusicWatch reported that U.S. consumer spending on recorded music, including streaming subscriptions, was 27% higher than five years earlier. Its approximate annual averages were $434 per U.S. streamer and $614 among paid on-demand streaming subscribers. The second figure applies to that paid-subscriber group, not to all streamers.
How large is music streaming worldwide?
DIMA’s 2026 release, drawing on IFPI’s industry figures, says global recorded-music revenue reached $31.7 billion in 2025 and paid music subscriptions reached 837 million users worldwide. These measure different things: revenue is an industry-wide money total, while the subscription figure counts users. Neither is a count of unique people who listen to music in any format.

What do Spotify’s audience and financial figures show?
Spotify’s Q4 2025 company results reported 751 million monthly active users, up 11% year over year, and 290 million premium subscribers, up 10% year over year. Monthly active users and premium subscribers are separate company metrics; an active user is not necessarily a paying subscriber. These figures describe Spotify, not the full music-streaming market.

Luminate’s midyear 2026 report describes U.S. viewing on major streaming services as strongly weighted toward library content. It reports nearly 19,000 library titles compared with 7,000 originals. In a viewer survey, respondents estimated that nearly 60% of their at-home viewing time went to content more than a year old; they estimated 43% went to new content shortly after release. Those are viewer estimates, and the percentages may not sum to 100 because of rounding.
In H1 2026, Netflix accounted for 57% of U.S. original-content viewing time among major subscription video-on-demand services, down year over year. This is a share within that defined original-content viewing measure—not a share of all U.S. television viewing.
What changed in original programming?
- U.S.-produced TV premieres fell 15% year over year in H1 2026, according to Luminate.
- SVOD series volume fell 12% year over year in the same half-year period.
- Streaming original films made up seven of the ten most-streamed titles in H1 2026.
The findings point to two different patterns rather than a contradiction: originals can produce prominent hits, while older library titles account for much of ongoing viewing time.
How should streaming statistics be compared?
- Check the denominator. Nielsen’s share of total TV use is not a streaming-only share. A company’s audience count is not a share of TV viewing.
- Keep audience measures distinct. Monthly active users, paid subscribers, survey respondents and viewing minutes count different things.
- Keep geography and period attached. Nielsen’s figures here are U.S. TV use in May 2026; MusicWatch’s consumer results are U.S. survey findings; IFPI’s revenue figures are global and cover 2025.
- Do not turn satisfaction into usage. Liking a service or judging its value is an opinion, whereas daily listening is a self-reported behavior.
- Separate company performance from the category. Spotify’s subscribers and finances describe one company; they do not establish the size or ranking of every music service.
There is no single harmonized global measure in these findings that ranks every video and music service. The useful comparison is the one that keeps the same measure, geography and time window on both sides.
