Render each assistant message as one growing Markdown document, not as a series of unrelated chunks. A network chunk can stop in the middle of a character, event, word, or Markdown construct, so the renderer must handle incomplete syntax deliberately. For a straightforward implementation, re-render the accumulated text with streaming-aware behavior; for interfaces where repeated full-string parsing is costly, consider an incremental parser that holds ambiguous syntax and updates settled output. In either case, keep transport handling separate and sanitize the final rendered content.
Why Markdown can look broken before an answer is finished
Markdown depends on context that may not exist at the end of a partial response. A lone *, for example, could become a list marker, emphasis delimiter, or part of another construct once more text arrives. An open code span, link, or emphasis delimiter may remain literal until its closing syntax appears. A table delimiter or list continuation can also change how the latest block is interpreted.
That means a visible change during generation is not necessarily a bug: the meaning of the prefix may genuinely be unresolved. TanStack’s streaming guide describes these incomplete-prefix cases and how completing syntax can restructure the latest block. TanStack AI streaming guide

Choose how the renderer handles an unfinished prefix
There are two practical approaches. The simpler one reparses the entire accumulated message whenever new text arrives. The more specialized approach retains parser state, defers ambiguous syntax, and appends or patches rendered nodes as the response grows. Neither is universally best; choose based on syntax needs, update frequency, framework fit, and measured behavior in your interface.

| Approach | How it works | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Reparse accumulated text | Append each text delta to the message source and render the whole source again. | Simpler to integrate, but each update parses the complete string again. |
| Incremental parsing and DOM updates | Feed new text into a parser that retains state, defers ambiguous syntax, and appends or patches rendered nodes. | Can avoid replacing settled output, but requires careful parser-state and DOM integration. |
Reparse the accumulated string: a good baseline
Keep the complete Markdown source for the current message and pass that growing string to a renderer on each update. TanStack documents a streaming extension for this pattern: it suppresses empty trailing headings, blockquotes, and list items while generation is incomplete, leaves completed structures intact, and displays the code accumulated so far in an unclosed code fence. This avoids coordinating incremental parser state and is a reasonable starting point when message lengths and update rates are manageable. TanStack’s streaming documentation
Full-string rendering repeats work as the message grows. Chrome for Developers notes that assigning replacement HTML through innerHTML parses the new HTML and replaces the element’s contents, so prior output is processed again. That describes the update path, not a universal performance benchmark. If your interface receives very frequent small deltas or handles unusually long messages, batch updates where appropriate and profile the actual UI. Chrome guidance on rendering LLM responses

Incremental parsing: defer ambiguity and update settled output
An incremental renderer consumes new input while retaining parser state. It can hold back syntax whose meaning is unresolved, then append or patch DOM nodes once enough text arrives. Chrome recommends a streaming Markdown parser alongside a DOM sanitizer for this class of interface. The copse project documentation describes both an at-rest renderer and an incremental DOM renderer, as well as sanitizer configuration. Those are project-documented capabilities, not independent validation; check syntax coverage, security behavior, browser support, and framework fit before adopting a library.
Keep network streaming separate from Markdown parsing
A transport read is not a Markdown boundary. It can end inside a UTF-8 character, a server-sent event (SSE), a word, a code fence, or a formula. Decode and frame the network data first; then append text deltas to the appropriate assistant message and give the renderer the accumulated source or new delta according to its API. In the ordinary chat case, maintain one renderer per assistant message.

The application should own Fetch or other transport handling, SSE framing, decoding, cancellation, retries, and completion state. The Markdown renderer should handle Markdown, not decide whether a connection ended successfully. Keep the producer’s state separate from any UI reveal animation. The AI Markdown streaming input guide and React chat example document integration patterns. In that example, JSON data inside SSE preserves newlines and whitespace in Markdown deltas, and an explicit completion event distinguishes success from an unexpected connection close. Treat that as an example, not a protocol requirement.
Treat generated Markdown as untrusted content
AI output can contain user-controlled or otherwise unsafe content. Chrome for Developers states: “Any and all user-generated content should always be sanitized before it’s displayed.” Sanitize at the rendered-content boundary, and inspect the combined output rather than assuming that sanitizing each incoming chunk independently is enough: dangerous markup can be split across chunks. Chrome names DOMPurify and sanitize-html as examples of sanitizers. Chrome’s security guidance

Set explicit policies for HTML, links, images, and code
Decide which Markdown features the interface allows instead of relying on permissive defaults. TanStack’s guide recommends keeping raw HTML disabled, using code highlighters that escape source code, applying application policies to outbound links and remote images, disabling frontmatter for AI responses, and disabling changing heading IDs. These controls are renderer-specific recommendations; the application’s security policy and the chosen library determine the exact settings. TanStack’s streaming guide
