A streamer with DVR lets you control a live broadcast’s timeline—usually by pausing or rewinding—or, in a different use of the term, saves selected programs to watch later. Those are not the same feature: a live rewind window does not necessarily create a lasting recording.

What does DVR mean on a live stream?

DVR stands for digital video recorder. In a live-streaming context, it commonly describes controls that let viewers pause, rewind, and resume a broadcast while it is still in progress. You can move back only within the portion the service makes available, and you cannot seek to a point before the stream began.

This is often time-shifting rather than a personal recording. The service may temporarily retain enough of the stream to support rewind, without promising that you can replay the whole program later.

Is live rewind the same as cloud DVR?

No. Live-stream DVR controls playback along an active stream. Cloud DVR records selected programs on the provider’s systems so you can play them later, subject to availability and expiry rules. Because the recording is stored by the service, a separate recorder is generally not required for that service’s cloud recordings.

  • Replay or video on demand: Watch a completed broadcast that the provider has made available afterward. A post-stream replay can exist even if viewers could not rewind during the live event.

What varies between DVR implementations?

The label alone does not tell you how far back you can seek, whether anything is saved, or which programs and devices are supported. Check the provider’s rules for the specific feature.

  • Seek window and retention: A live rewind window may be limited; saved cloud recordings can expire after a defined period.
  • Program rights: A channel or program may not allow recording, even when the service offers cloud DVR.
  • Device and format support: A feature may work on some apps or playback formats but not others.
  • Storage method: Cloud recording and local storage are separate approaches, with different equipment requirements.

Examples from streaming services and platforms

YouTube Live: pause and rewind during a broadcast

YouTube describes its DVR feature as letting viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. DVR can be enabled or disabled in the stream settings. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. YouTube says DVR availability may be limited for streams longer than 12 hours; Apple TV, Apple AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower limits. These are YouTube-specific conditions, not a general limit for DVR services. YouTube Help explains live-stream DVR.

Cloudflare Stream: a configurable live-stream timeline

Cloudflare’s DVR mode is opt-in through its player or HLS manifest. It can provide a growing seekable timeline, resume from a pause point, and jump to the live edge. Its documentation requires HLS v8; DVR mode is unavailable for DASH manifests. It also describes constraints including degraded performance beyond three hours, a 7,200-segment manifest limit, and possible compatibility problems with older players or devices. Cloudflare documents its Stream player.

Sling TV and Fubo: saved cloud recordings

These services use DVR to mean saved programs, not merely a rewind control on the active stream. Sling says its cloud recordings are available on supported devices in the United States without extra equipment. Its page, as retrieved October 7, 2026, displayed 50 free hours and an unlimited-storage tier for $5 per month. The page also described different replay periods: three days for sporting events, seven days for new TV shows, and nine months for movies or series recorded with Replay. These are service details displayed at that time and may change. See Sling’s DVR information.

Fubo’s U.S. help article says all U.S. plans include unlimited Cloud DVR storage at no extra charge, with recordings accessible on supported devices and ordinarily expiring after nine months. Recording eligibility can vary by channel and program; Fubo says a missing record option means that content does not allow Cloud DVR. Fubo explains how recording works.

Roku: cloud recordings versus local antenna pause

Roku distinguishes Cloud DVR for Roku Live TV from Live TV Pause for over-the-air television. Its support page says Cloud DVR availability is limited to the United States and depends on content rights. The separate Live TV Pause feature works on compatible Roku TVs with a 16GB USB flash drive and can pause live digital broadcast television for up to 90 minutes, including antenna use or cable connected without a set-top box. Check that a specific TV model has a USB port before buying a drive. The USB requirement applies to this local pause feature, not to Roku cloud recordings. Roku describes Live TV Pause and Cloud DVR.

What does DVR mean for streaming providers?

For a streaming platform, DVR can refer to software that retains live-stream segments and exposes a time-shifted playback window. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API, for example, creates DVR sessions from retained stream segments. Its documentation describes joining a stream late and watching with a lag, while treating clips archived as video on demand as a separate workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That system has platform-specific limits: retained segments can be kept for up to 30 days, and a DVR session’s selected window can be up to 24 hours. These are Google Cloud infrastructure limits, not consumer-service standards. Google Cloud documents DVR sessions.

How to tell which kind of DVR a service offers

  1. Look for the action described. Pause, rewind, and return to live usually indicate time-shift controls; record, schedule, or recordings library usually indicate saved programs.
  2. Check what happens after the broadcast ends. Confirm whether the program remains available, how long it stays, and whether it must be selected for recording in advance.
  3. Check eligibility and access. Verify channel and program restrictions, geographic limits, supported devices, and any required hardware.
  4. Read the limits as service-specific terms. Seek windows, retention periods, and plan inclusions differ, and may change over time.
