If a Stray trophy or Steam Achievement stays locked, first identify the platform that owns the record, install the latest game update, verify the requirement word for word, then perform it again from a save before the trigger. On PlayStation, refresh your PSN session and reboot if the notification is delayed. If the list remains locked, contact the platform’s official support with your game version, save details and the exact steps you completed; there is no supported manual-unlock procedure.
First determine where the achievement is recorded
Stray uses different achievement systems. A PlayStation trophy and a Steam Achievement are separate records, so troubleshooting the wrong list can make a successful unlock appear to be missing.

Use the name and description shown in the relevant list. A console notification, the PlayStation overlay and Steam may use different presentation or timing even when the underlying action is the same.

Do not troubleshoot an old build. The developer has shipped fixes for achievement-specific input, progression blockers, crashes, collision and navigation. Updating can remove a known defect, although the published notes do not guarantee that a trophy already missed will be repaired retroactively.

On a console, let the game finish updating before loading the save. On Steam, wait for the client to finish downloading the current build, then relaunch the game. If a platform reports that no update is available, record the displayed game version for support rather than assuming the installation is current.
Check the exact requirement, not a similar action
Achievement descriptions often combine several conditions. Performing an action that looks similar is not enough if one part of the requirement was different, occurred in the wrong place or was interrupted. Read the complete text in your platform’s list and compare it with what actually happened.
Separate the named action from the required conditions
- Note the exact trophy or achievement name, including whether it refers to a particular object, character, location or sequence.
- Break the description into individual conditions. For example, an interaction may require the correct target and a specific stage of the story, not merely touching the same type of object elsewhere.
- Confirm that the game registered the interaction: look for the expected animation, dialogue, inventory change or objective transition before leaving the area.
- Do not infer an unlisted requirement from another player’s guide. If the official description is brief, repeat the named action carefully and avoid adding unsupported assumptions.
The Scratch trophy is a useful example of why platform and input matter: Hotfix 2 specifically addressed keyboard-and-mouse players. The existence of that fix does not establish a universal trigger for every input method, so use the wording in your own list and repeat the action after updating. Likewise, a trophy such as Territory should be checked against its complete in-game description rather than a remembered version of the requirement.

PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5: a complete recovery sequence
Follow these steps in order. They are designed to distinguish a delayed notification from a failed trigger.
- Open the trophy list. Find Stray on the console and read the locked item’s exact requirement. Write down the trophy name so you can identify it if you need support.
- Confirm the console is online. A trophy notification can be delayed while the console is offline or while the account is synchronizing. Leave the game running briefly after the qualifying action and then check the list again.
- Verify the game build. Install any pending Stray update before making another attempt. Restart the game after the installation completes.
- Recreate every condition. Load the save that contains the required situation and perform the complete action exactly as described. Do not skip an animation, dialogue exchange or intervening step that appears to be part of the sequence.
- Refresh the PSN session. If the notification still has not appeared, sign out of PSN completely, reboot the console, sign back in and open the trophy list again. This refreshes the account state without altering the game’s save.
- Retry from before the trigger. Load a save made before the qualifying event and perform it again. If you do not have such a save, repeat the requirement in the current save only if the game still allows the action; do not delete the save to create a new attempt.
- Escalate with evidence. If the trophy remains locked after the retry, contact PlayStation Support. Include the platform model, Stray version, trophy name, save slot and a concise timeline of what you did and when the game failed to register it.
Support may diagnose an account or game-state problem, but the available guidance does not promise that an agent can manually grant a trophy. Treat any offer of a third-party unlock as unsupported and risky.
PlayStation version played on PC
When Stray is being played through a PlayStation-supported PC release, the trophy list is accessed through the PlayStation overlay rather than Steam’s achievement page. Press Shift+F1, select Trophies, and read the locked item there. PlayStation states that the overlay displays the game’s trophy groups and, when the title supports it, tracks progress across PC and console.

Use the same sequence as on a console: confirm you are signed in to the intended PlayStation account, install the current game build, perform the exact requirement again and allow time for the list to refresh. If the overlay still shows the item as locked, document the PC release, game version, trophy name, account context and save slot before contacting PlayStation Support. Do not substitute the Steam achievement page unless you are actually running the Steam version; the two services maintain different records.
Steam PC: check the achievement and replay it cleanly
- Open Steam’s Stray achievement page. Compare the locked item with its full description and record the exact name.
- Finish all downloads and relaunch. Install the current update, including Hotfix 2 if you are using keyboard and mouse, then close and reopen the game.
- Use a save before the event. Load the earliest available save that still permits the requirement. Avoid changing several variables at once; perform only the described sequence so you can tell whether the trigger occurred.
- Observe the game’s confirmation. Wait for the expected in-game response before moving on. If the game crashes, clips through the world or stops progressing, note the location and action instead of repeatedly forcing the same broken state.
- Recheck Steam. After the attempt, open the achievement page again. A delayed display can make a successful event look missing for a short time, so give the client a moment to refresh before starting another run.
- Use official support channels for persistent failures. Steam identifies Stray as a Steam Achievements title and directs players to official support and technical discussions for PC problems. Provide the achievement name, game version, input method, save details, crash or progression symptoms and the exact replay steps.
Steam’s published patch notes establish a specific keyboard-and-mouse fix for the scratch trophy, but they do not state that every previously missed achievement will unlock automatically after patching. A successful retry is therefore still necessary.

Some “trophy bugs” are actually game-state failures. If a character will not accept an item, an objective does not advance, or your character falls through the world, the achievement condition may never be reached even though you performed an earlier step correctly.

Symptoms that point to a game-state problem
- The required character or object does not offer the expected interaction.
- A tracker, objective or dialogue transition never completes.
- Your character becomes stuck, falls out of the playable area or cannot reach the required location.
- The game crashes or loses audio immediately before the qualifying event.
Update first, then load a save before the failed transition and attempt the sequence again. Patch 3 specifically addressed the progression blocker encountered while giving Seamus the tracker, as well as falling-through-the-world and other out-of-bounds issues. Patch 4 added crash, audio, collision and navigation fixes. These notes explain why an update can be relevant even when the locked item’s name is unrelated to those systems; they do not prove that an already-recorded failure will be rewritten.
Use saves carefully and preserve evidence
A save before the trigger is the safest way to retry because it lets you reproduce the same conditions without discarding progress. Keep the original save until the trophy is recorded, and make a separate attempt only when the platform’s normal save options allow it. If the requirement can no longer be performed in the current state, explain that limitation to support rather than deleting data and losing the evidence of what happened.

- Platform and edition: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, a PlayStation-supported PC release or Steam.
- Game version shown by the platform.
- Exact trophy or achievement name and its displayed description.
- Save slot or profile used for the attempt.
- Input method, especially keyboard and mouse for the scratch-related issue.
- What you did, what confirmation you saw, whether the game crashed or stopped progressing, and whether you retried after rebooting and signing in again.
Methods that are not supported fixes
Do not present the following as reliable repairs:
- Deleting a save file or starting over solely to force a server-side record to change.
- Changing the console or PC system clock.
- Using a third-party achievement or trophy unlocker.
- Buying a different edition in the hope that it will rewrite an existing account record.
The cited platform guidance provides no evidence that any of these methods repairs a missing Stray trophy, and some can destroy the save or put the account at risk. The supported path is to update, verify the exact trigger, refresh the account session where applicable, replay from a viable save and escalate with complete details.
A short decision checklist
- Is the missing record a PlayStation trophy, a PlayStation PC-overlay trophy or a Steam Achievement?
- Is Stray fully updated, including the hotfix relevant to your input method?
- Does the locked item’s exact wording match the action you performed?
- Did the game show the expected interaction or objective transition?
- Have you allowed time for synchronization and, on PlayStation, signed out, rebooted and signed back in?
- Can you load a save from before the trigger and perform it again?
- If it still fails, have you recorded the platform, version, trophy name, save slot and failure sequence for official support?
Following this order separates a mistaken requirement, a delayed account update and a genuine game-state or platform failure without risking your existing progress.
