For most dedicated lifters, Hevy is the best all-round strength-training tracker. It combines fast set logging with progression charts, personal-record tracking, suggested weights and reps through Hevy Trainer, and optional social features. Choose Strong if you want a private, distraction-light logbook with flexible session editing and CSV export. Choose Strava if strength workouts need to sit beside running, cycling and other activities in one activity history; its May 21, 2026 strength overhaul makes it far more capable for lifting than it was previously, but it is still less programming-focused than Hevy.
There is no universal winner. The right choice depends on whether your priority is adaptive programming, a clean training record, or a multi-sport community. This comparison separates those jobs so you can choose without losing your workout history or paying for features you will not use.

What each app is actually designed to do
Hevy: a strength log with coaching layered on top
Hevy is the most complete option when the app itself should help you decide what to do next. You can record weight and reps for normal, warm-up, drop and failure sets; start a rest timer; use a plate calculator; and record RPE. Its exercise library, routines and progress tools cover the fundamentals of a serious training log.

The analytics go beyond a list of sessions. Hevy tracks personal records, estimated one-rep max (1RM), training volume, muscle activity, progress charts and body measurements. Hevy Trainer adds personalized programs, suggested weights and reps, progressive-overload recommendations and progress reports. That combination is why Hevy is the strongest default recommendation for a lifter who wants both a record and guidance.

Hevy also has an optional social layer: a feed, follows, comments and workout sharing, plus streaks and leaderboards. You can sync workouts with Strava. Those features are useful for accountability, but they are not required; the core logging workflow remains usable without treating the app as a social network.
Strong: the focused digital logbook
Strong deliberately keeps the workout screen out of your way. Its official positioning is a simple tracker that is “simpler and more powerful than a notebook,” with planning and progress tools available when you need them rather than a coaching feed demanding attention.
Strong supports supersets, custom exercises, warm-up calculation, RPE, advanced charts, body measurements, scheduling, muscle heat maps, custom timers and workout sharing. Siri Shortcuts can speed up common actions, and Apple Health integration can connect your training record to the rest of your health data. The app also lets you control permissions and export your data as CSV, a meaningful advantage if you want an independent copy of your history.
Its practical strength is flexibility during a real session. You can adjust an exercise or change a set on the fly instead of following a rigid generated plan. Strong Pro adds deeper visualizations such as best sets and estimated 1RM; Strong advertises its free accounts as “Free Forever,” although the supplied information does not state a Pro price.
Strava: a multi-sport activity record that now handles lifting properly
Strava’s strength experience changed substantially with the overhaul announced May 21, 2026. The update adds a dedicated workout log for sets, reps and weight, automatically populated muscle maps, five strength shareables and 14 partner integrations. Strava said the new experience was rolling out globally in the following weeks, so the exact appearance and availability can vary while the rollout completes.
Strava reported more than 195 million users in more than 185 countries and over 500 million strength uploads in 2025. Its launch partners included Hevy, Garmin, WHOOP, Fitbod, JEFIT, COROS and Amazfit, among others. That ecosystem is Strava’s key advantage: a lifting session can live beside a ride, run or hike in the same social timeline.
Strava is still not primarily a guided strength-program app. It is better at showing the shape of your overall activity and making workouts shareable than at prescribing a detailed progression scheme. Tom’s Guide lists Strava as free with a $11.99-per-month premium option; treat that as a dated US reference because app-store prices differ by country and by billing channel.

Logging sets, reps and weight during a workout
All three apps can record the information that makes a strength session useful: exercise, load, repetitions and completed sets. The difference is how much structure surrounds that entry.
Hevy workflow
- Create or select a routine from your exercise library.
- For each exercise, enter the weight and repetitions. Mark sets as warm-up, drop or failure when appropriate.
- Use the rest timer between sets, the plate calculator when loading a bar, and RPE to capture effort.
- Finish the workout to update volume, estimated 1RM, muscle activity, charts and personal records.
Hevy’s routine system is useful when your week follows a repeatable split. Trainer can then supply suggested weights and reps and progressive-overload recommendations, while your completed sets provide the feedback for later progress reports.
Strong workflow
- Choose a scheduled workout or start a new session.
- Log sets and reps, using custom exercises when the built-in library does not match your movement.
- Group movements as supersets, apply the warm-up calculator and record RPE.
- Use custom timers and edit the session as circumstances change; export a CSV copy when you want an external archive.
This is the best fit when your program changes frequently or you want the app to behave like a fast replacement for a paper notebook rather than a coach.

Strava workflow
- Open the dedicated strength workout log available with the 2026 strength experience.
- Enter sets, repetitions and weight for each movement.
- Review the automatically populated muscle map and choose a strength shareable if you want to post the session.
- Use a partner integration when your watch or another training service is the place where you actually record the workout.
Strava’s new logger closes the largest gap between it and dedicated gym apps. It is convenient if your other activities already live there, but the supplied information does not describe a Hevy-style adaptive program builder inside Strava.

Programming and progressive overload
For a lifter asking “what should I do next?”, Hevy has the clearest answer. Hevy Trainer supplies personalized programs, suggested weights and reps, progressive-overload guidance and progress reports. You can still create your own routines and ignore the coaching layer, but it is available when you want structure.
Strong supports planning, scheduling and reusable workouts, yet its emphasis is user control and on-the-fly adjustment. That is an advantage for experienced lifters who already have a progression model, need to substitute exercises, or do not want recommendations changing their plan.
Strava’s 2026 update improves recording and muscle visibility, not the evidence supplied for individualized programming. If your main requirement is an adaptive strength plan, use Hevy or keep a separate program while using Strava as the combined activity record.
Progress analytics and what you can learn from the data
| Capability | Hevy | Strong | Strava |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume and estimated 1RM | Supported, with progress charts and personal records | Supported; Strong Pro adds deeper views such as best sets and estimated 1RM | Dedicated set, rep and weight logging is supported in the 2026 strength experience; the supplied information does not establish equivalent lifting analytics |
| Muscle-level feedback | Muscle activity tracking | Muscle heat maps | Automatically populated muscle maps |
| Body measurements | Supported | Supported | Not stated |
| Personal records and streaks | Personal records, streaks and leaderboards | Best-set views in Pro; other recognition features not stated | Shareables and the wider activity history; lifting-specific PR behavior not stated |
These labels are not interchangeable. Volume tells you how much work you recorded; estimated 1RM projects strength from a set; muscle maps show where logged work is concentrated. None of them proves that your technique, recovery or exercise selection is optimal. Use the numbers to spot trends and then apply coaching judgment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPrivacy, sharing and community
When Strong is the better privacy choice
Strong’s permissions controls and CSV export make it the clearest choice for someone who wants ownership of a portable training record. Its workout-sharing feature is optional, so you can keep sessions private while still using charts, scheduling and Apple Health.
When Hevy’s social layer helps
Hevy offers follows, comments, a feed, workout sharing, streaks and leaderboards. This can make consistency visible to training partners without forcing you to publish every session. Strava synchronization is available if your friends already use Strava, but you can keep the Hevy log as the detailed source of truth.
When Strava’s network matters
Strava is the natural choice when the social graph spans sports. A strength workout can appear alongside runs and rides, and the 2026 update adds five strength-specific shareables. Its scale—more than 195 million users in over 185 countries, according to Strava—means a greater chance that your existing training community is already there.
Phones, watches and integrations
| Platform or integration | Hevy | Strong | Strava |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone | Supported | Supported | Supported as part of Strava’s app ecosystem |
| Android | Supported | Supported | Supported as part of Strava’s app ecosystem |
| Apple Watch | Supported | Supported | Strength partner integrations listed; exact watch workflow depends on the integration |
| Wear OS | Supported | Not stated | Not stated |
| Web access | Supported | Not stated | Strava’s broader service is web-connected; the supplied information does not specify a dedicated web strength logger |
| Health and automation | Not stated beyond Strava sync | Apple Health and Siri Shortcuts | 14 partner integrations announced for the strength experience |
If you want to log from an Apple Watch or Android phone, all three have a viable phone-based path, but Hevy is the only one in the supplied information that explicitly covers both Apple Watch and Wear OS as well as web access. Strong is the better documented choice for Apple Health and Siri Shortcuts.
Free limits and paid features
| App | Free offering | Paid or expanded features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hevy | Up to four routines, seven custom exercises and three months of history | Pro removes those limits and adds advanced statistics and Hevy Trainer | Limits and pricing can change; confirm the current offer in your app store |
| Strong | Accounts advertised as “Free Forever” | Strong Pro adds deeper visualization, including best sets and estimated 1RM | The supplied information does not state a current Pro price |
| Strava | Free tier available | Tom’s Guide lists a $11.99/month premium option | This is a dated US reference; regional and billing-channel prices vary |
For a new lifter, Hevy’s three-month history limit is the most consequential free-tier restriction because it can remove older comparisons unless you upgrade or maintain another record. Strong’s free positioning is attractive for a long-running log, while Strava’s value depends more on whether you already use its multi-sport features.

Which app fits common lifter profiles?
You follow a structured hypertrophy or strength plan
Choose Hevy. Routines, volume, estimated 1RM, personal records and Trainer’s suggested weights and reps cover both execution and progression. Strong is a good alternative if you already own the program and only need reliable recording.
You change exercises because of equipment, time or pain
Choose Strong. Custom exercises, supersets and on-the-fly editing make substitutions straightforward. Hevy can also log custom movements, but its main advantage is stronger programming support rather than maximum improvisation.
You run, cycle and lift in the same week
Choose Strava if one timeline and one social community matter more than specialized lifting analytics. The 2026 strength log now records the core set data, and partner integrations can feed workouts from other devices. Choose Hevy instead if lifting is the main sport and Strava is only a place to share completed sessions.
You dislike public feeds and want an exportable archive
Choose Strong. Keep permissions restricted, export CSV periodically and use the app as a durable training database.
You want accountability from friends
Choose Hevy when your circle is primarily gym-focused and you want comments, streaks and leaderboards. Choose Strava when the same group also shares endurance activities and you want strength posts to appear in that broader feed.
How to choose without losing your history
- Define the primary job. Decide whether the app is your coach, your private logbook or your all-sports activity hub.
- Check your device. Confirm Apple Watch, Wear OS, Android, web and health-platform support against the current app listing before committing.
- Test one complete training week. Include warm-ups, supersets, a failed or modified set, a rest timer and at least one exercise that needs a custom entry.
- Inspect the resulting data. Verify that volume, estimated 1RM, muscle views and personal records reflect what you actually did.
- Make an export plan. Strong explicitly supports CSV export. For the other apps, confirm what account backup or export options are currently available before relying on them as your only archive.
- Review the paywall after the trial period. Hevy’s history and routine limits, Strong Pro visualizations and Strava’s regional subscription price affect long-term cost differently.
Common pitfalls
Recording inconsistent units or exercise names
Changing between kilograms and pounds, or creating several names for the same movement, fragments charts and personal records. Set your unit preference once and use one canonical exercise entry whenever possible.
Treating estimated 1RM as a tested max
An estimated 1RM is a calculation from a logged set, not a laboratory measurement or a guarantee that you can safely lift that load. Compare the trend under similar conditions instead of chasing a single projected number.

A partner connection may send workouts into Strava without sending every edit back to the original logger. Check which app is the authoritative record before correcting a session, especially during the 2026 Strava rollout.
Confusing a social feed with a program
Sharing a workout can improve accountability, but it does not replace progression rules, recovery planning or coaching. Strava is especially easy to misuse this way because its community experience is broader than its strength-programming tools.
Bottom line: which should you install?
Install Hevy if you want one app to log sets quickly, show meaningful strength trends and provide optional programming help. Install Strong if a quiet, editable and exportable log matters more than recommendations or community features. Install Strava if lifting is one part of a multi-sport life and your friends, devices and activity history are already there. Strava’s 2026 strength overhaul makes it a credible logger; Hevy remains the more complete dedicated strength platform, while Strong remains the clearest choice for a private logbook.
