Stranger Than Heaven is not a new Like a Dragon sequel with a different subtitle. It is RGG Studio’s separate historical action-adventure, built around a 50-year story that moves through five eras of Japanese history and a newly designed physical combat system. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is an already released, contemporary party RPG starring Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu, with turn-based Live Command battles, Japan-and-Hawaii travel, and a substantial collection of activities.
The games may share RGG Studio’s cinematic drama, dense city environments and interest in larger-than-life characters, but they answer different player needs. Choose Stranger Than Heaven if you want a new historical setting, a fresh protagonist and real-time close-quarters action. Choose Infinite Wealth if you want an available game, established Ichiban and Kiryu continuity, turn-based party strategy and a mature minigame suite.

What Stranger Than Heaven is actually trying to be
Stranger Than Heaven is presented as a new historical action-adventure rather than as a numbered continuation of Like a Dragon. Its central hook is scale: the story spans 50 years and five distinct eras—1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965—across five Japanese cities. That structure gives the game a deliberately broad historical frame instead of keeping the player in one contemporary chapter of the franchise’s world.

The time jumps matter more than a cosmetic change of clothing or scenery. Moving between those dates places the narrative in visibly different phases of modern Japanese history, so the surrounding society, city life and character circumstances can change from era to era. The announced material does not establish every location, protagonist detail or story outcome, so those points should not be treated as confirmed similarities to Ichiban’s or Kiryu’s journeys.
Its other defining choice is combat. RGG Studio describes a newly designed physical action system built around direct exchanges at close range. Blocking, grappling, stamina recovery and the management of a knocked-down character are all part of the documented combat picture. The result is intended to make each encounter feel more tactile than selecting an action from a party command menu.
Official announcements also point to show-business elements. That establishes an important flavor of the game, but it does not establish that it contains the same activity roster as Infinite Wealth. No complete list of optional diversions has been announced in the supplied material, so comparisons should stop at that distinction rather than assume familiar karaoke, island-management or arcade features will return unchanged.
What Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth provides
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a released dramatic RPG and part of the established Like a Dragon/Yakuza continuity. Its principal cast includes Ichiban Kasuga and Kazuma Kiryu, giving it a direct connection to characters and storylines that long-time players already know. It is set in contemporary Japan and Hawaii, with Yokohama and Hawaii among the highlighted locations.
The game’s signature system is the Live Command RPG Battle format. Battles are turn-based, but they are not passive menu exchanges: party actions and positioning influence decisions. You choose how characters act, consider the order and placement of the group, and build a response to the encounter rather than controlling one fighter through a continuous string of real-time attacks.
Outside battles, the official materials emphasize a broad activity layer. Karaoke, darts, golf, batting-cage baseball, Mahjong and arcade recreations provide short-form diversions. Dondoko Island adds a larger optional destination, while Crazy Delivery supplies another activity built around the game’s contemporary world. These features make Infinite Wealth a particularly strong fit for players who want a role-playing campaign that repeatedly branches into minigames and side pursuits.
SEGA reported that Infinite Wealth shipped and sold one million units in its first seven days. That is a publisher-reported commercial figure, not an independent sales estimate, and it describes the game’s launch performance rather than a guarantee about its quality or the size of its current player base.

Combat: physical action versus turn-based party decisions
How Stranger Than Heaven feels different
The clearest mechanical divide is whether you are physically responding to an attack in real time. In Stranger Than Heaven, the announced systems ask you to block, grapple and manage stamina during close-quarters exchanges. An Xbox Wire hands-on report describes a knocked-down character fending off attacks until stamina recovers. That example points to a defensive loop in which survival depends on reading pressure, protecting yourself and waiting for the opportunity to re-engage.
Stamina recovery is therefore more than a background statistic. It connects defense and offense: being overwhelmed can temporarily limit what your character can do, while recovering creates a window to resume the exchange. Grappling adds another layer to the physical interaction, because proximity and timing matter in a way they do not in a conventional command-based battle. The available evidence does not specify every weapon, difficulty option or progression rule, so those should be treated as unannounced rather than inferred.
Why the developers changed the feel
Producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto explained the design motivation in a statement reproduced by GamesRadar: “Frankly speaking, with Yakuza, you could even play it with closed eyes.” In context, the remark describes why the new project was designed to demand more tactile attention. It is not a claim that every Like a Dragon battle is effortless; it is the producer’s rationale for making the new game’s physical exchanges more demanding and immediate.
That distinction is useful when setting expectations. Stranger Than Heaven should not be approached as Infinite Wealth with a historical skin. The announced combat loop is built around moment-to-moment defense and contact, whereas Infinite Wealth asks you to evaluate a party’s available actions and positioning within a turn-based structure.

Infinite Wealth gives you time to make a party decision. You select actions for the relevant character, account for the order of the fight and use positioning as part of the tactical picture. The format supports RPG planning: party composition, action choice and the way members are arranged all matter to the result.
That does not make the system simple or purely menu-driven. Its “Live Command” name reflects an RPG battle format in which placement and timing within the turn structure influence outcomes. However, the player is not required to block a real-time blow, recover stamina while being attacked or win a close-quarters exchange through direct physical input. The mental skill is planning a group response rather than executing an individual fighter’s defense.
Time, place and historical distance
Stranger Than Heaven’s five-era structure
The announced dates—1915, 1929, 1943, 1951 and 1965—span half a century. They are not merely five chapters in one recent decade; they cover major changes in Japanese society and place the cast in markedly different historical circumstances. The five-city structure reinforces that breadth by moving the story through multiple Japanese urban settings.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

For a player, this means the setting itself is part of the narrative engine. Architecture, public life and the pressures faced by characters can change alongside the calendar. The exact names of all five cities, the length of each era and the way the protagonist connects those periods have not been established in the supplied announcements, so no fixed route or chapter breakdown should be assumed.

Infinite Wealth stays in the present-day world of the series and expands the journey between Japan and Hawaii. Yokohama is among the Japanese locations identified in official material, while Hawaii supplies the contrasting overseas setting. The contemporary timeframe lets the game build its activities and urban encounters around a recognizable modern environment rather than reconstructing five historical periods.
The contrast is practical as well as atmospheric. Choose Stranger Than Heaven for a story whose identity is tied to historical change and movement across decades. Choose Infinite Wealth if you prefer a current-day adventure that alternates between Japanese and Hawaiian locations while keeping its established continuity.
Continuity and character expectations
Developers have explained why Stranger Than Heaven is not a Like a Dragon entry. That framing is important: RGG Studio is using its experience with cinematic drama and detailed cities to build a separate property, not quietly renaming a numbered sequel. You should therefore expect a new identity and protagonist rather than a confirmed continuation of Ichiban Kasuga’s or Kazuma Kiryu’s story.
Infinite Wealth makes the opposite promise. Its place in the Like a Dragon/Yakuza continuity and its starring roles for Ichiban and Kiryu make prior series knowledge meaningful. New players can still approach it as a complete released RPG, but returning players have a clear reason to care about its character history and ongoing relationships.
The shared studio explains why the games may look related in trailers or feel related in their emphasis on dramatic set pieces and urban detail. It does not erase the continuity boundary. Treating Stranger Than Heaven as “the next Yakuza” can create the wrong expectations about cast, chronology and combat before you even start playing.
Side content and the shape of a playthrough
Infinite Wealth’s established activity suite
The official activity list gives Infinite Wealth a clear identity beyond its main plot. Karaoke and darts offer compact diversions; golf, batting-cage baseball and Mahjong provide repeatable activities with their own familiar rhythms; arcade recreations connect the modern setting to classic game culture. Dondoko Island is a larger optional destination, and Crazy Delivery adds another substantial activity to the menu.

What is and is not known about Stranger Than Heaven’s extras
Stranger Than Heaven announcements emphasize the five-era narrative, multiple cities, physical combat and show-business elements. They do not present it as carrying over the same named minigame package from Infinite Wealth. That is not evidence that it lacks optional content; it is simply the limit of what has been announced.

Stranger Than Heaven’s planned launch
Stranger Than Heaven is scheduled to release on January 15, 2027. The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Game Pass. Because the date is in the future, availability can still depend on the edition, storefront and regional Game Pass catalog at launch; the announcement establishes the planned platforms, not a guarantee that every access method will have identical terms in every country.
A pre-release purchase is therefore a decision about a future game whose complete feature set is not yet public. You can evaluate its confirmed premise, eras, cities and combat direction, but you cannot use a finished-game review of its campaign length, performance or optional content because those details are not established here.
Infinite Wealth’s current availability
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth launched on January 26, 2024 for PlayStation, Xbox, Windows and Steam. It is the practical choice if you want to play immediately rather than wait for a scheduled release. Its battle system, cast, locations and activity suite are already defined as part of the released product.

Pick Stranger Than Heaven if…
- You want historical storytelling to be a core feature instead of background decoration.
- You prefer controlling a fighter directly, reacting to attacks and managing stamina in real time.
- You are interested in a new protagonist and a separate continuity rather than another chapter for Ichiban or Kiryu.
- You are comfortable waiting until the scheduled January 15, 2027 release and accepting that some features remain unannounced.
Pick Infinite Wealth if…
- You want a complete game immediately on PlayStation, Xbox, Windows or Steam.
- You enjoy turn-based RPG planning with a party, positioning and character actions.
- You want the established Ichiban-and-Kiryu storyline and a contemporary Japan-and-Hawaii setting.
- You value a documented activity layer that includes Dondoko Island, Crazy Delivery and the listed sports, games and arcade diversions.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“It is made by RGG Studio, so it must be Like a Dragon.”
Studio authorship explains the family resemblance, but the developers explicitly position Stranger Than Heaven as a separate historical action-adventure. Its identity is defined by the five-era structure and physical combat, not by a numbered-series label.
“Stranger Than Heaven is the turn-based one.”
The documented turn-based system belongs to Infinite Wealth. Stranger Than Heaven is described through real-time blocking, grappling, stamina recovery and close-quarters action. Until more systems are announced, do not assume it includes the same party-command format.
“The new game has the same minigames as Infinite Wealth.”
Infinite Wealth‘s activities are specifically named in official materials. Stranger Than Heaven announcements highlight show-business elements but do not establish an identical list. Similarity should not be treated as confirmation.
“Infinite Wealth is a historical adventure too.”
Its documented setting is contemporary Japan and Hawaii. The historical five-era structure belongs to Stranger Than Heaven.
How to make the decision without overreading early information
- Decide whether timing is decisive. If you need a playable title now, choose the 2024 release. If you are evaluating a future purchase, continue to the next step.
- Choose your combat preference. Select real-time physical defense and stamina management for Stranger Than Heaven; select turn-based party planning and positioning for Infinite Wealth.
- Choose your narrative relationship. Pick the separate historical property for a fresh starting point, or the established Ichiban/Kiryu continuity for a connected series story.
- Choose your setting. Five Japanese eras and cities point to Stranger Than Heaven; contemporary Japan and Hawaii point to Infinite Wealth.
- Check your platform. Match your hardware and preferred access method against the announced platform lists, remembering that the newer game’s launch is scheduled rather than completed.
- Use side content as a tie-breaker. If the named minigames and activities are essential, the released game has the clearer evidence. If combat and historical atmosphere matter more, the upcoming game has the stronger match.
The short verdict
These are not interchangeable versions of the same game. Stranger Than Heaven is the forward-looking choice: a new RGG Studio identity, five historical eras, five Japanese cities and physical action combat, scheduled for January 15, 2027. Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the immediately playable choice: a contemporary Japan-and-Hawaii RPG with Ichiban and Kiryu, Live Command turn-based battles and a documented collection of side activities.
The right purchase follows your preferred structure, not the developer name. Want historical change and hands-on action? Watch Stranger Than Heaven. Want a finished party RPG with established characters and abundant diversions? Play Infinite Wealth.
