Strands, Wordle and Connections are all word games, but they test different skills. Strands is a spatial search: you trace theme-related words through a letter grid and find a spangram that names the theme. Connections is a categorization puzzle: you divide a set of words into groups that share a theme. Wordle is a deduction puzzle: you guess a hidden word and use color feedback to place or eliminate letters.

The most useful distinction is the action each game requires. Strands asks, “What words can I trace, and what idea links them?” Connections asks, “Which four words belong together?” Wordle asks, “Which word fits the evidence from my guesses?”

The three games at a glance

Game Primary action Puzzle object Feedback Main reasoning demand Distinctive mechanic
Strands Trace words in a letter grid Theme-related words, including a spangram Found theme words and a hint earned through non-theme words Spatial pattern recognition and theme inference The spangram spans opposite sides of the grid and names the theme
Connections Group words into sets Four groups of words linked by shared themes Whether the proposed grouping satisfies a shared-theme objective Category discovery and managing plausible alternatives The challenge is separating the intended connection from tempting near-connections
Wordle Guess a hidden word One answer word Green, yellow and gray letters Vocabulary, elimination and letter-position deduction Each guess gives per-letter information about presence and position

The Strands board and hint details in this comparison come from the third-party guide “How to Play NYT Strands (Beginner’s Guide)” at Strands.today. The New York Times Help Center supplies the objective for Connections and the color rules for Wordle. Because the accessible Strands source is not an official New York Times rules page, treat its board and hint description as a guide to the mechanic rather than a claim that every current official detail has been independently verified.

What Strands asks you to do

Trace words through a grid

Strands presents a field of letters rather than a blank for a single answer or a loose list that you sort. You search the grid and trace letters to form words. The spatial layout matters: you are looking for paths, not merely recognizing a word on a page.

That changes the basic solving question. In Wordle, a possible answer is evaluated against a fixed number of positions. In Connections, a word is evaluated against other words in the set. In Strands, a candidate must satisfy two conditions at once: its letters must form a legal path in the grid, and the word must fit the puzzle’s theme.

Use the theme as a search constraint

Theme words are the target words that explain the day’s concept. The theme is therefore more than a label added after the solve; it narrows the search space. Once you suspect what the theme represents, you can scan for words that belong to that idea, then check whether their letters can be traced.

The reverse is also useful. A traceable word can reveal the theme by suggesting a shared subject with words you have already found. Strong solving alternates between visual search and semantic inference instead of relying on either one alone.

Find the spangram

Strands includes a special word called the spangram. According to the Strands.today beginner’s guide, it spans opposite sides of the grid and names the theme. It is not simply another ordinary theme entry: its path gives you a long structural clue, while its meaning states what the puzzle is about.

When you locate a plausible spangram, use it as an organizing hypothesis. Its meaning can suggest the remaining answers, and its path can divide the board into regions that are easier to inspect. Do not assume that any long word is the spangram; it must satisfy the opposite-side span and the theme relationship described by the guide.

Earn a hint with non-theme words

The same guide says that finding three valid non-theme words earns a hint. These words are not part of the final theme set, but they reward exploration of the grid. This gives Strands a pressure-release mechanism that the other two games do not share in the same form: you can make useful progress without immediately identifying a target category or the final answer.

Non-theme words should be treated as deliberate search material rather than wasted guesses. If you see a clear word that does not fit the theme, tracing it can move you toward a hint and may also expose nearby letters or paths.

Why Strands feels spatial

Strands combines two kinds of uncertainty. You may not know where a word is located, and you may not know which words belong to the theme. A familiar word can remain hidden because its letters are arranged along an unexpected route; a visible route can remain irrelevant because the resulting word is outside the theme.

That combination makes Strands closer to a visual word hunt than to a conventional clue-and-answer puzzle. The key feedback is not a colored letter state or a completed category. It is the discovery of a word, the interpretation of what that word implies, and—when enough non-theme words have been found—the availability of a hint.

What Wordle asks you to do

Test a complete word

Wordle starts with a hidden word and asks you to submit guesses. Each guess is a complete candidate, so the central decision is which word will provide the most useful evidence while still having a chance to be correct.

The New York Times Help Center’s “Bonus Puzzles” guidance defines the three feedback colors:

  • Green: the letter is in the answer and in the correct position.
  • Yellow: the letter is in the answer but in the wrong position.
  • Gray: the letter is absent from the word.

These colors turn every guess into a set of positional and membership constraints. A green tile fixes one location. A yellow tile preserves the letter but rules out that location. A gray tile removes a letter, subject to the usual care required when a guess contains repeated letters and the answer contains fewer copies.

Deduce by elimination and placement

Wordle’s reasoning is sequential. First identify letters that must be present or absent. Then move confirmed letters into the positions still available and test combinations that produce a plausible word. The vocabulary challenge is real, but the game is not simply a test of how many obscure words you know: the feedback progressively limits the legal possibilities.

A productive guess balances information and risk. A word containing several untested common letters can reveal which sounds or letter patterns are available. Later guesses should use the green and yellow information rather than repeatedly testing letters that gray feedback has already ruled out.

Why Wordle feels deductive

Wordle has no grid path to search and no set of words to partition. Its uncertainty is concentrated in one hidden answer. The player repeatedly asks whether a letter belongs in the answer and, if it does, where it can go. The visual feedback is explicit and local: each tile reports on one letter’s relationship to one position.

That makes Wordle the most constrained of the three games. The board does not invite open-ended interpretation in the same way as Strands, and it does not present several competing categories at once as Connections does. Instead, each submitted word narrows a single answer space.

What Connections asks you to do

Find shared themes among words

The New York Times Help Center describes Connections as finding themes between words. You receive a collection of words and must identify groups whose members share a meaningful connection.

The important action is selection and grouping, not tracing or letter placement. A word can appear to fit several ideas, so recognizing a possible category is only the first step. You must decide whether the same connection applies cleanly to the other members of the proposed group and whether the remaining words can form coherent groups afterward.

Resolve ambiguity

Connections is difficult because a word may support more than one plausible association. A term might belong to a broad subject, a phrase, a grammatical pattern or a cultural reference. The intended solution depends on a shared relationship that is specific enough to account for all four members of a group.

This creates a different kind of feedback from Wordle’s colors. You do not receive a letter-by-letter report. The useful evidence comes from testing a group against the puzzle’s shared-theme objective and observing how that choice affects the remaining words. A seemingly strong group can be wrong if it relies on a looser connection than another available grouping.

Build the whole partition

Solving one group is not the same as finishing Connections. Every word must ultimately belong to a valid group, so each proposed category has consequences for the rest of the board. A disciplined solver checks the leftovers before committing: if the remaining words do not support three equally clear themes, the first group may be too broad or based on a decoy connection.

Connections therefore rewards category precision and ambiguity management. The challenge is not primarily knowing a hidden answer or spotting a path; it is finding a set of relationships that fits the entire collection simultaneously.

How the reasoning differs

Reasoning question Strands Connections Wordle
What must I inspect? Letter paths and theme candidates in a grid Relationships among the displayed words Letters and positions in a hidden word
What makes a candidate valid? A traceable word that fits the theme A group whose members share the intended theme A word consistent with all color constraints
Where does ambiguity arise? Several possible paths or words that may not fit the theme Words that plausibly fit multiple categories Several words matching the known letters and positions
What kind of progress matters? Theme words, the spangram and hint-generating non-theme words Reliable groups and a coherent set of leftovers More confirmed letters, positions and eliminated candidates

These differences can be summarized as three mental modes. Strands is spatial-plus-thematic: you search where words could be and what they mean. Connections is categorical: you compare meanings and test whether a shared relationship is exact enough. Wordle is constraint-based: you update a word hypothesis after every colored result.

How feedback works in each game

Strands: discovery and assistance

Strands gives positive feedback when you uncover a theme word and, under the guide’s described rules, provides a hint after three valid non-theme words. The feedback is therefore cumulative and exploratory. It rewards finding structure in the board even before the final theme set is complete.

Connections: category confirmation

Connections feedback is tied to whether a proposed grouping fulfills the shared-theme objective. The relevant unit is the group, not an individual letter. A word’s value changes depending on which other words are placed beside it and whether the resulting partition remains viable.

Wordle: explicit letter states

Wordle offers the most granular feedback. Green, yellow and gray states tell you exactly how each guessed letter relates to the hidden answer, allowing you to maintain a running list of fixed positions, displaced letters and exclusions.

Which game should you play?

Choose Strands when you like visual searching

  • You enjoy scanning a board for paths and patterns.
  • You like discovering a theme from partial evidence.
  • You want progress that can come from exploratory words as well as final answers.
  • You prefer a puzzle in which meaning and spatial arrangement interact.

Choose Connections when you like categories and word relationships

  • You enjoy sorting ideas rather than manipulating letter positions.
  • You are comfortable comparing several plausible interpretations of a word.
  • You like checking whether one decision makes the remaining puzzle cleaner or messier.
  • You prefer a whole-board classification problem.

Choose Wordle when you like deduction from precise clues

  • You enjoy testing hypotheses one guess at a time.
  • You like explicit feedback about letter presence and position.
  • You prefer a single answer space over several simultaneous categories.
  • You find elimination and pattern completion satisfying.

None of these preferences makes one game objectively harder. They distribute difficulty differently. Strands can leave you searching both the board and your understanding of the theme. Connections can make a familiar word difficult because its intended relationship is unclear. Wordle can make a nearly solved pattern tense because several candidate words still satisfy the available constraints.

Practical solving approaches

A focused Strands routine

  1. Read the theme before committing to a path. Treat it as a hypothesis about the kinds of words you need.
  2. Scan for conspicuous paths. Look for words whose letters can be traced naturally and check whether their meanings fit the theme.
  3. Record confirmed theme words mentally or externally. Their meanings can reveal the common concept and suggest missing entries.
  4. Search for the spangram. Look for a theme-naming word whose route spans opposite sides of the grid, as described by the Strands.today guide.
  5. Use non-theme words deliberately. Three valid non-theme words are described as earning a hint, so exploratory finds can have a concrete benefit.
  6. Revisit unused regions. After the theme becomes clearer, inspect letters that previously looked unpromising with the new vocabulary in mind.

A disciplined Connections routine

  1. List obvious relationships without committing immediately. Separate strong, specific connections from broad associations.
  2. Look for a group with four clean members. A category that needs exceptions or loose interpretations is a warning sign.
  3. Check the leftovers. Imagine removing the proposed group and see whether the remaining words support three similarly precise themes.
  4. Test competing interpretations. If one word fits two groups, compare which placement produces the more coherent complete partition.
  5. Prefer the narrower shared meaning. A precise relationship that explains all members is stronger than a general topic that merely touches them.

A careful Wordle routine

  1. Enter a word that tests useful letters. Early information is valuable when it distinguishes several possible answers.
  2. Separate the feedback types. Keep green positions fixed, move yellow letters to different positions, and remove gray letters from consideration.
  3. Track repeated-letter implications. A gray result for a repeated letter can mean the answer contains fewer copies than the guess, so do not treat every tile as an independent yes-or-no result.
  4. Construct candidates from the remaining pattern. Use vocabulary and common letter sequences to generate words that satisfy every known constraint.
  5. Use later guesses to resolve ambiguity. When several words remain, choose a guess that either can be the answer or distinguishes the candidates by testing a disputed letter.

Common misconceptions

“Strands is just a word search.”

Its grid-tracing element resembles a word search, but the theme requirement and the spangram make semantic interpretation central. A word that can be traced is not automatically one of the target entries.

“Connections is solved as soon as I see one category.”

A plausible category is only a partial result. The proposed group must fit the shared-theme objective, and the remaining words must still support the other groups. Decoy relationships are part of the categorization challenge.

“Wordle feedback tells me the whole answer.”

Color feedback reports each guessed letter’s presence and position status; it does not identify the answer by itself. The solver must combine green, yellow and gray information across guesses.

“All three games test the same kind of vocabulary.”

Vocabulary helps in each game, but the bottleneck differs. Strands adds path-finding and theme recognition, Connections adds category precision, and Wordle adds positional deduction from letter feedback.

Bottom line

Play Strands for a theme-driven hunt through a letter grid, Connections for the challenge of building exact word categories, and Wordle for focused deduction from green, yellow and gray clues. Their shared word-game audience can make them look interchangeable, but their core actions—trace, group and guess—create distinctly different solving experiences.
