Your first day in Stranded Deep should follow a strict order: reach an island, secure the starting life raft, gather nearby materials, craft a knife, axe and spear, build a shelter, establish a Water Still, then make fire and food. Save before nightfall and postpone deep-water trips, wreck dives and ambitious raft building until those basic systems are working.
The game tracks health, hunger, thirst and sunstroke while asking you to build, craft, explore, hunt, fish and eventually escape. A calm first day is less about collecting everything on the beach and more about creating a camp that can support the next several days.
What “surviving day one” actually means
In the aftermath of a plane crash, you begin with limited equipment, a life raft and an unfamiliar island environment. The first-day win condition is not exploration or a large base. It is a dependable loop for water, food, shelter and basic tools.

- Water: start a Water Still and keep its fuel supply available.
- Shelter: construct a shelter that provides sleeping and saving.
- Food: have a fire and a low-risk source of edible items.
- Tools: carry equipment for harvesting, processing and basic defense or hunting.
- Position: know where your raft and camp are before visibility drops.
Everything else can wait. A custom raft, long swims, shipwreck searches and fights with dangerous wildlife consume time and expose you to risks that do not solve an immediate survival need.

1. Reach land and secure the starting raft
Use the paddle in the starting life raft to reach the nearest island. Once you arrive, pull the raft above the waterline or otherwise secure it on shore so it cannot drift away. Keep it in a conspicuous position rather than dragging it behind vegetation or around the island.
How to approach the beach
- Paddle toward a section of shoreline with a clear landing area.
- Disembark close to land instead of swimming farther than necessary.
- Move the life raft onto the beach immediately.
- Stay in the shallow coastal area while you learn movement, item pickup and inventory controls.
The raft is already sufficient for reaching your first island. Treat it as transport and as a visual landmark; replacing it is not a day-one requirement.
2. Choose a camp position before collecting everything
Do not place your shelter at the first random patch of sand. A good first camp is easy to find, close to renewable materials and practical for later departures. These are strategy criteria rather than developer-mandated placement rules.

Leave room between the shelter, fire and still. Crowded crafting areas make it harder to find containers and replacement leaves, especially at night.
3. Gather the first materials in a controlled loop
Walk the shoreline and nearby vegetation once, collecting only what supports the first construction sequence. Your initial haul should include sticks, rocks, fibrous leaves or palm fronds, and any safely reachable cloth or coconuts.
Use a three-pass gathering pattern
- Pass one—tools: pick up enough rocks, sticks and leaves to unlock your first harvesting tools.
- Pass two—camp: collect the additional sticks, leaves and other listed materials needed for a shelter, campfire and Water Still.
- Pass three—reserve: leave a small pile of leaves and sticks beside camp for fuel and repairs rather than exhausting every visible resource.
The crafting interface is context-sensitive: it uses nearby items and your inventory, and the displayed recipe is the authority for your current game version. Community recipe lists can become outdated after updates, so check the in-game quantities instead of relying on a remembered number.

What not to do while gathering
- Do not swim far from shore for a single item.
- Do not spend the whole morning chasing a difficult animal.
- Do not carry every coconut away before you know whether you need it for food or another task.
- Do not wander inland so far that you lose sight of the beach and raft.
4. Craft three tools before attempting ambitious work
Your first tools should be a crude knife, crude axe and crude spear. They cover the three jobs that determine whether the camp becomes self-sufficient: processing, harvesting and obtaining basic food or protection.

Because recipes and quantities can change between updates, open the crafting menu for each item and verify the current requirement. If a recipe does not appear, move the needed materials closer, check that you are using the intended item type, and confirm that the game has registered the pickup.
5. Build a shelter and create your first save point
Construct the early shelter as soon as your basic tools are ready. Place it above the high-tide line, close to your resource area and visible from the beach. The shelter is both a place to sleep and a point at which you can save progress, making it the most important early structure.
Placement checks
- It is not sitting where waves can reach it.
- You can see it from the approach to your raft or from a recognizable beach landmark.
- There is enough open space around it to add a fire and Water Still without blocking access.
- You can reach it without crossing deep water.
After construction, interact with the shelter to verify that sleeping and saving are available. Do this before leaving the immediate area; discovering at dusk that the shelter was not completed is an avoidable setback.
6. Make fire and cover the first meals
Build a campfire after the shelter. If you have enough materials, add a cooking or smoking attachment so food can be prepared or preserved rather than eaten only in its raw form. The exact order depends on the items you found, but the objective is a reliable meal before night.
Low-risk food choices
- Use the starter rations when hunger is becoming urgent; saving every ration while taking damage from hunger is not efficient.
- Use safely collected coconuts according to the current on-screen guidance.
- Use fish or small-game meat obtained close to shore with the crude spear.
- Cook or smoke food when the required attachment is available, and keep the finished food at camp.
Do not turn the first day into a hunting expedition. Dangerous wildlife can cost health, time and the ability to return to camp, while a small amount of safe food is enough to move on to water production.

7. Build the Water Still before thirst becomes the emergency
The Water Still is the key first-day utility. Build it as soon as the displayed recipe is affordable. It produces drinkable water, uses fibrous leaves or palm fronds as charges and can also collect rain.
Keep the still operating
- Place it near camp where you can check it during every return.
- Load the required fibrous leaves or palm fronds shown by the recipe or interaction prompt.
- Store replacement leaves beside it instead of scattering them around the island.
- Check the still before long gathering trips and after returning from the shoreline.
- Use collected rain when available, but do not assume rain alone will maintain supply.
A still that exists but has no leaf fuel is not a water plan. Make leaf collection part of every short resource loop until you have a comfortable reserve.
8. Manage sunstroke, hunger and thirst while working
Health, hunger, thirst and sunstroke are active survival pressures. A task that looks harmless can become dangerous when you remain exposed, travel too far or delay drinking until the meter is critical.
Use short work cycles
- Gather a manageable load, return to the camp area, and check your needs before starting another trip.
- Drink from the Water Still when your thirst requires it instead of waiting for a severe penalty.
- Break up exposed beach work with shelter or shade when conditions make continued activity unsafe.
- Keep food and the spear accessible so a small encounter does not force a desperate inventory search.
If a meter is falling rapidly, stop expanding the base. Stabilize water, food and health first; construction can resume after the immediate pressure is controlled.
9. Save before night and shorten your travel radius
Night reduces visibility. Before darkness, return to camp, save at the shelter and leave the life raft in a visible position. Keep the knife, axe, spear and spare leaves together so you can begin the next morning without searching the island.
Tasks to postpone until daylight
- Shipwreck dives and other underwater searches
- Long swims between islands
- Unfamiliar inland routes
- Encounters with dangerous wildlife
- Construction that requires a large, scattered material haul
Night is useful for sleeping and resetting your plan, not for proving how far you can travel without landmarks.

10. Treat a custom raft as the next milestone, not the first one
A larger custom raft requires a buoyant base, a floor and propulsion. It will eventually make travel between islands more practical, but it is less urgent than shelter, water, food and basic tools.

- Your shelter is complete and has been used as a save point.
- The Water Still is producing water and has replacement leaves nearby.
- You can obtain food without taking repeated high-risk trips.
- You have enough spare materials that taking them from camp will not interrupt survival.
- You have identified a safe shoreline for launching and returning.
Build the raft when it solves a travel problem, not simply because the recipe becomes visible. A poorly supplied camp on a moving platform is harder to recover than a stable first island.
A practical first-day schedule
The clock will vary with your controls, island layout and luck, so use this as an order of operations rather than a timed speedrun.

How to decide whether a new island is worth visiting
Once the first camp is stable, compare destinations by practical survival value rather than appearance. Prefer an island that offers water-still fuel, sticks, rocks, cloth or coconuts, has an easy-to-find shoreline and allows a safe raft launch. A beautiful but resource-poor island can create more travel work than it is worth.
Leave only when you can recover
- Save before departure.
- Carry the tools needed for the specific resource you are seeking.
- Know where the raft will land when you return.
- Keep enough water and food for the trip back.
- Do not make an unfamiliar island your new home until it can support the same shelter, water and food loop.
Common first-day failures and fixes
“My raft disappeared.”
It was probably left in the water and drifted. Search the nearby shoreline first, then make raft security part of the landing procedure: pull it onto land and use it as a fixed landmark.

“I built a shelter but cannot save.”
Confirm that construction completed and interact with the shelter again. If the placement is obstructed or incomplete, rebuild in a clear area above the high-tide line and test the save interaction immediately.

“The Water Still is empty.”
Check its charges. The still needs fibrous leaves or palm fronds to keep producing water; rain collection does not remove the need to maintain its supply.
“I cannot find a recipe from an online list.”
Open the current in-game crafting menu and follow its displayed components. Recipe quantities can change with updates, and the context-sensitive menu may require materials to be nearby or in your inventory.
“I am hungry, thirsty and far from camp.”
Stop gathering and return by the shortest recognizable route. The first-day plan is designed to prevent this situation by using short loops and checking needs before each departure.
“I lost health while exploring.”
Return to shelter, address water and food, and avoid repeating the same route until you understand the hazard. Do not answer a health problem by extending the expedition.
What the game version and platform listings establish
The full release is listed as 10 August 2022. The listed platforms are Windows, macOS and SteamOS/Linux, with single-player and online or split-screen co-op options. The first-day priorities remain the same in solo or cooperative play, although a group can divide gathering, construction and shoreline watch.
Because community guides may describe older recipes or quantities, use the crafting menu in your installed version as the final authority. No reliable first-day completion percentage or success-rate statistic is established, so the sequence above is a practical survival route rather than a measured benchmark.
First-day decision rule
Before you leave the starting island, ask four questions: Can I save at my shelter? Is the Water Still charged and producing water? Do I have a safe meal or a clear way to obtain one? Can I find my raft and camp again in poor visibility? If any answer is no, spend the next work cycle fixing that gap. If all four answers are yes, daylight exploration and eventual custom-raft construction become sensible next steps.
