Straight-through processing (STP) is the automated handling of a financial trade or payment transfer across its relevant processing stages, with transaction data passed between systems without manual re-entry or reformatting. Depending on the workflow, those stages may include confirmation, matching, instruction generation, clearing, and settlement.
What straight-through processing means
The BIS Committee on Payments and Market Infrastructures defines STP as automated end-to-end processing of trades or payment transfers, including automated completion of relevant transaction steps without re-keying or reformatting data. The European Central Bank gives a similar definition and qualifies the listed steps with “where relevant,” because not every transaction follows the same chain.
In practical terms, information is captured and then carried forward through connected systems and participants. The aim is to avoid repeated manual handling of the same transaction details. Canada’s Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions describes this single-entry principle as data being entered into technical systems once and then used for subsequent transaction processing.

Where STP is used
Payments
In a payment workflow, STP refers to automation across the relevant steps for processing a transfer. The exact chain depends on the payment message, system, and process; the term alone does not identify a particular payment rail or promise a particular processing speed.
Securities
In securities operations, STP can describe automated post-trade processing from execution toward settlement. The CISI’s securities operations workbook emphasizes electronic information exchange among participants and compatible information flows, technology, and processes. Those are practical operating considerations, not a universal technical standard. CISI workbook information

Which transaction steps may be automated?
Depending on the market and workflow, an STP chain may automate some or all of these steps:
- Confirmation: recording or communicating the agreed transaction details.
- Matching: checking that the parties’ transaction records correspond.
- Instruction generation: creating the instructions needed for subsequent processing.
- Clearing: processing obligations or instructions between participants, as defined by the relevant arrangement.
- Settlement: completing the transfer of the relevant funds or securities.
The BIS and ECB list these as possible parts of STP, not as mandatory stages in every transaction. Clearing, settlement, and payment execution are related concepts within financial workflows; none is a synonym for STP itself.
What STP does not guarantee
- It does not mean instant processing. STP describes how data moves through a workflow, not how quickly that workflow finishes.
- It does not mean real-time or final settlement. Automation does not, by itself, specify when settlement occurs or when it becomes final.
- It does not mean automatic approval. Processing a transaction through connected systems is distinct from deciding whether it should be approved.
- It does not ensure error-free completion. Automation can reduce the need for repeated manual data handling, but the cited definitions do not promise that every transaction will be correct or complete. Exceptions such as incomplete or mismatched instructions still require appropriate handling.
How to tell whether a workflow is genuinely STP
When evaluating a particular payment or securities process, look beyond the label and check its actual scope:
- Transaction domain: Is the process for payments, securities trades, or another transaction type?
- Stage coverage: Which steps are automated, and where do manual handoffs remain?
- Data handling: Is information reused downstream without re-keying or reformatting?
- Interoperability: Can the systems and participants exchange usable information in compatible formats and processes?
- Exception handling: What happens when information is missing, inconsistent, or unmatched?
There is no common exception-rate benchmark established by the cited sources. Compare system-specific operational data rather than assuming a universal rate or benefit.

STP and regulation
STP can appear in regulatory discussions, but a regulatory mention must be read within its jurisdiction, market, and legal status. On February 9, 2022, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced a proposal to reduce risks in clearance and settlement. Among its proposed measures were policies and procedures to facilitate STP for certain clearing agencies that provide central matching services, along with annual progress reporting. The proposal also addressed completing allocations, confirmations, and affirmations as soon as technologically practicable on trade date. That announcement describes proposed measures; on its own, it does not establish a current operative requirement. SEC announcement, February 9, 2022
