Four story-led games have published PC minimums that make them worth checking on an older or modest computer: Stardew Valley, Undertale, Papers, Please and Firewatch. Their requirements vary considerably, and a listed minimum is not a promise of smooth play. Compare each game’s current requirements with your processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system and available storage before installing.
What “low-end PC” means for these games
There is no single specification that defines a low-end PC. A computer may meet a game’s memory and storage requirements but fall short on its processor, graphics hardware or operating system. Requirements below are the Windows minimums shown on the cited listings; they are useful for screening, not performance tests. No frame-rate measurements are available here, so actual results depend on your particular computer and settings.
HP’s gaming guidance likewise treats minimum requirements as a baseline and notes that reducing settings may help with stutters or low frame rates: HP laptop gaming requirements. Check the game’s current listing as well as your PC’s specifications; storefront support requirements can differ from the game’s own listed operating-system minimum.
Four story-driven games and their published minimums
| Game | Story and play style | Windows minimums listed | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stardew Valley | Open-ended country-life RPG | Windows Vista or greater; 2 GHz processor; 2 GB RAM; 256 MB video memory with Shader Model 3.0+; DirectX 10 | 500 MB |
| Undertale | RPG whose listing highlights that players do not have to kill anyone | Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10; 2 GB RAM; 128 MB graphics | 200 MB |
| Papers, Please | Story-rich dystopian simulation about deciding who may enter Arstotzka | 1.5 GHz Core2Duo; 2 GB RAM; OpenGL 1.4 or better; minimum 1280×720 display | 100 MB |
| Firewatch | Wilderness mystery about a fire lookout in Wyoming, with exploration and choices affecting a relationship | Windows 7 or higher, 64-bit; Intel Core i3 2.00 GHz or AMD equivalent; 6 GB RAM; GeForce 450 or higher with 1 GB memory; DirectX 11 | 4 GB |
Stardew Valley
Steam lists a 2 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, 256 MB video memory with Shader Model 3.0+, DirectX 10, and 500 MB storage for Windows. Its game listing says Windows Vista or greater, but Steam’s client has required Windows 10 or later since January 1, 2024. Those are different requirements: an older Windows version appearing in the game listing does not mean the current Steam client supports it. See the Stardew Valley Steam listing.

Undertale
GOG lists Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10, 2 GB RAM, 128 MB graphics and 200 MB storage as minimums. The operating-system text is the listing’s stated requirement, not confirmation that present-day storefront or client support remains available on every version. Check the current Undertale GOG listing before relying on an older Windows installation.
Papers, Please
The Windows listing specifies a 1.5 GHz Core2Duo, 2 GB RAM, OpenGL 1.4 or better, 100 MB storage and a minimum 1280×720 display. The game deals with mature themes including crime, smuggling, immigration and border control. Review the Papers, Please page for its description and current requirements.

Firewatch
Firewatch is the outlier in this group for memory and graphics: its Windows minimums include 6 GB RAM and a GeForce 450 or higher with 1 GB memory, alongside DirectX 11 and 4 GB storage. It may be worth considering on a modest but more capable PC, but the listed requirements make it a poor first candidate for especially old hardware. Consult Steam Support’s Firewatch requirements and the Firewatch GOG listing.

How to check whether a game is a realistic fit
- Find your PC’s specifications. Note the processor model, installed RAM, graphics hardware, Windows version and free storage. For a laptop, distinguish its dedicated graphics card from integrated graphics if both are listed.
- Open the current game listing. Compare every listed minimum with your computer, not just RAM or storage. A mismatch in the graphics API, display resolution or operating-system support can matter even when other components meet the numbers.
- Use the minimum as a screening threshold, not an FPS forecast. A game can meet its published minimum yet still run poorly on a particular system. If it launches but stutters or has low frame rates, try reduced graphics settings where the game provides them.
- Recheck platform support before installing. The game’s requirements and the storefront client’s supported operating systems are separate; the Steam Windows client requirement noted for Stardew Valley illustrates why an old game minimum may not tell the whole compatibility story.
How to choose among the four
- Start with a small storage footprint: Papers, Please lists 100 MB, though its 1280×720 minimum display and Core2Duo requirement still need checking.
- Compare graphics requirements carefully: Undertale lists 128 MB graphics, while Stardew Valley specifies 256 MB video memory and Shader Model 3.0+.
- Allow more headroom for the wilderness mystery: Firewatch lists 6 GB RAM and a GeForce 450-or-higher graphics requirement, distinguishing it from the other three on this shortlist.
- Choose by the kind of story you want: rural life and open-ended play, a choice-driven RPG, border-control decisions in a dystopia, or an exploration-led mystery offer very different experiences.
