For most family bathrooms, a storage geyser is the safer choice when several people shower in sequence, more than one fixture may need hot water, electrical capacity is limited, or off-peak electricity is available. An instant (tankless) geyser is usually better when bathroom use is brief or intermittent, space is scarce, and the property can provide the heater’s high electrical load and required inlet flow.

The right decision depends on peak hot-water demand, available voltage and service capacity, temperature stability, installation rules, and your electricity tariff—not simply on which unit has the higher efficiency percentage.

What is the difference between a storage and an instant geyser?

Storage geyser

A storage, or tank, geyser heats potable water inside an insulated tank and holds it at a thermostat-controlled temperature. The stored volume acts as a buffer: a 150-litre tank can supply a shower immediately after heating, even though the heating elements are not powerful enough to heat the full shower flow instantaneously. Once the tank is depleted, the heater needs recovery time.

Storage units are larger and heavier, require a suitable mounting surface or support, and lose some heat while standing. They can, however, heat water during lower-tariff periods, work with comparatively modest electrical service, and keep outlet temperature relatively steady while the tank has usable hot water.

Instant geyser

An instant, tankless, or continuous-flow geyser heats water only while it passes through the unit. There is little or no stored hot water. The outlet temperature therefore depends on heater power, inlet-water temperature, and flow rate. Reducing flow generally allows a higher temperature rise; increasing flow can make the water cooler or cause the unit to shut down if its minimum-flow or safety limits are not met.

Tankless units eliminate tank standby loss and occupy less wall or floor space, but they demand high electrical power at the moment of use. A model must be rated for the desired flow at the actual temperature rise in your location, not merely advertised as “instant.”

Which is better for a bathroom?

Use this practical rule:

  • Choose storage for family bathrooms, sequential showers, two or more fixtures used together, low electrical capacity, or an off-peak tariff.
  • Choose instant for one-person or intermittent use, a very small installation space, and a property with adequate high-capacity wiring, breakers, service, voltage, and inlet flow.

If you cannot verify the electrical service and flow requirements, do not order an instant unit first. A licensed electrician or plumber should confirm the installation before purchase.

Storage versus instant: comparison at a glance

Factor Storage geyser Instant geyser
Shower readiness Needs heating and recovery time, but hot water is ready after the tank reaches temperature No tank warm-up; heats on demand once minimum flow and power conditions are met
Multiple fixtures Tank volume buffers simultaneous use until the stored water is exhausted Must meet the combined flow rate; temperature can fall when demand exceeds its rating
Space Larger and heavier; needs clearance, support, and access Compact, but may need larger conductors, breakers, and service capacity
Energy behavior Has standby/tank heat loss; can use off-peak electricity Avoids tank standby loss but creates a high instantaneous electrical load
Temperature stability Generally stable while usable tank water remains Depends continuously on flow, inlet temperature, and available power
Typical best fit Families, repeated showers, limited electrical capacity, off-peak tariffs Intermittent use, limited space, adequate high-capacity electrical supply
Maintenance focus Tank, heating element, thermostat, anode where fitted, pressure relief, and possible sediment Inlet filter, heat exchanger or element, flow sensor, scale control, and electrical protection

Can an instant geyser run a shower?

Yes, but only when its power and flow rating match the shower. Whole-house tankless units have higher gallons-per-minute (GPM) capacity and can supply several sources simultaneously, according to AHRI homeowner guidance. Smaller bathroom units may be intended for one low-flow outlet.

Use the required temperature rise to check the rating. Temperature rise is the target hot-water temperature minus the incoming-water temperature. For example, water entering at 15°C and a 40°C shower target require a 25°C rise. A unit that delivers its advertised flow at a smaller rise may deliver substantially less in winter or in a colder climate.

Why flow can fall

  • The showerhead flow is higher than the heater’s rated GPM at your temperature rise.
  • Two outlets are drawing hot water at once.
  • Inlet pressure or flow is below the manufacturer’s minimum.
  • The electrical supply cannot provide the rated power, so the unit limits output or trips protection.
  • Scale, a blocked inlet filter, or a failing flow sensor restricts water movement.

Do not assume that a unit advertised for a “shower” can supply a rain shower, hand shower, basin, and another bathroom at the same time. Add the expected fixture flows and compare that total with the rating at the required temperature rise.

Which type uses less electricity?

Instant units avoid the tank’s standby loss, so they can be more efficient for short, irregular use. Australian Government YourHome guidance says electric instantaneous systems are about 20–30% more efficient than electric storage systems. That is an efficiency comparison, not a guaranteed bill reduction.

A U.S. Department of Energy Building America measure guide from 2012 estimated that, at best, an electric tankless heater could save about 12% in energy costs compared with an electric tank-type unit. Actual bills vary with tariff, shower duration, incoming-water temperature, household demand, pipe losses, and whether a storage tank can be heated during a cheap-rate period.

YourHome also notes that electric instantaneous heaters can draw up to 28 kW, may require three-phase supply, and that single-phase models can have very limited shower flow. A high-power unit can therefore reduce standby loss while increasing service-upgrade costs or peak-demand charges.

How tariffs change the answer

With an off-peak or time-of-use tariff, a storage tank can heat before the household’s morning demand and avoid expensive peak periods. An instant heater cannot shift its electrical demand: it consumes power whenever a tap or shower runs. Conversely, if the bathroom is used only briefly and a storage tank would remain hot for long periods, the tank’s standby loss becomes more significant.

ENERGY STAR defines Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) as delivered energy divided by input energy and uses GPM and first-hour ratings to compare products. Do not compare a storage tank’s first-hour rating directly with an instant heater’s GPM. They describe different demand profiles; compare both against the same temperature rise, fixture flow, and usage pattern.

How to size a geyser for a bathroom

Step 1: Count simultaneous outlets

List showers, basins, baths, and nearby appliances that may use hot water at the same time. A household that schedules one shower after another has a different requirement from one where two showers and a basin run together.

Rheem 11kW Multi Fixture Tankless Electric Water Heater - 240V
  • Get the performance you expect. Choose the right size water heater for your home and verify electrical requirements before installation. When properly sized and professionally installed, Rheem Tankless Electric Water Heaters deliver reliable, on-demand hot water while saving valuable space.
  • 11kW model provides up to 2.68 GPM
  • Multiple fixture applicatons
  • Wiring Requirements (RTEX‑11): Requires 240V single‑phase power, one- 50‑amp double‑pole breaker, one set of #8 AWG copper conductors with ground, and a recommended minimum 100‑amp household electrical service panel for proper operation
  • Digital thermostatic temperature controls in 1-degree increments ranging from 80°F - 140°F (26°C - 60°C)

Step 2: Measure or estimate flow

Check each fixture’s label or measure it with a bucket and a timer. Add the flows for outlets that may operate together. Low-flow showerheads can reduce the required heater capacity, but confirm that the instant unit’s minimum-flow requirement is still met.

Step 3: Set the target temperature rise

Use the coldest expected inlet temperature, not a mild-season average. Subtract it from the desired outlet temperature. A larger rise requires more power or a lower flow rate.

Step 4: Size storage by peak demand and recovery

For a tank, estimate the hot-water volume needed during the busiest period and check the manufacturer’s first-hour rating, recovery rate, and thermostat setting. A tank’s nominal volume is not the same as the amount of mixed water delivered at the shower temperature; mixing hot tank water with cold water can extend usable volume, while pipe losses and a high shower flow reduce it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Size instant by rated flow and electrical load

Check the unit’s GPM or litres-per-minute rating at your required temperature rise, its minimum inlet flow, voltage, phase, rated current, breaker, and conductor requirements. Have an electrician verify that the main service and distribution board can carry the load without unsafe overloading.

Installation and bathroom safety

Use a licensed electrician and licensed plumber where your jurisdiction requires them, and follow the local electrical and plumbing code. Product certification and wet-area rules differ by country. Singapore’s regulator treats both instantaneous and storage electric water heaters as controlled goods that should carry the SAFETY Mark and be installed by a licensed electrical worker.

Electrical protection

RCD/GFCI protection is common in wet-area rules, but the required device and rating are jurisdiction-specific. Hong Kong EMSD guidance requires RCD protection for electric heaters installed at or below 2.25 metres in a bathroom and sets restrictions for shower-storage outlet valves. That requirement must not be copied to another country without checking its code.

Scald prevention

Control outlet temperature with a compliant tempering or thermostatic device. New South Wales requires delivery at ordinary personal-hygiene fixtures to be no more than 50°C, and 45°C in specified care, disability, health-care, and school settings. Other jurisdictions may use different limits. A tank thermostat setting alone is not a substitute for a correctly installed temperature-control device.

Pre-commissioning checklist

  • Correct voltage, phase, breaker, cable size, isolation switch, and earthing.
  • RCD/GFCI protection where required by local rules.
  • Pressure-relief or safety valve, correctly sized discharge pipe, and a safe drain path.
  • Secure mounting and adequate structural support for a full storage tank.
  • Manufacturer-required clearances, ventilation, access, and bathroom installation zones.
  • Waterproof connections and no exposed electrical parts in splash-prone locations.
  • Minimum inlet flow and pressure verified for an instant unit.
  • Tempering or thermostatic valve set and tested at the outlet.

These checks do not replace a local inspection or compliance certificate. Never bypass a safety valve, RCD/GFCI, thermostat, or isolation switch to make a heater operate.

Space, plumbing, and installation cost trade-offs

An instant unit has a small physical footprint, which can be decisive in a compact bathroom. The apparent space saving may be offset by a new high-current circuit, larger conductors, a service upgrade, three-phase conversion, or wall alterations. A storage unit needs tank clearance and support, and a full tank can impose substantial load on its mounting or floor.

Purchase price alone is not a fair comparison. Ask for a written installation estimate that includes electrical upgrades, pipework, valves, supports, disposal of the old unit, code-required protection, and inspection. A cheaper heater can become the more expensive option if the property cannot supply its rated power without major work.

Maintenance and common problems

Storage problems

  • Water turns cold quickly: the tank may be undersized, recovery may be slow, or an element or thermostat may have failed.
  • Temperature fluctuates: inspect the mixing or tempering valve and check for excessive simultaneous demand.
  • Dripping relief valve: have pressure, thermal expansion, and the valve checked; do not cap or block the discharge.
  • Noise or reduced output: sediment or scale may be present, depending on water quality and tank design.

Instant problems

  • Cold water at low flow: flow may be below the activation threshold or the inlet filter may be blocked.
  • Temperature falls when another tap opens: combined demand exceeds the unit’s rated flow.
  • Breaker or RCD/GFCI trips: stop using the heater and call a qualified electrician; repeated resetting can conceal a dangerous fault.
  • Output is lower in winter: colder inlet water increases the required temperature rise.

Descale heat exchangers or elements only according to the manufacturer’s procedure and local water conditions. Electrical covers should be opened only by a qualified person.

When a point-of-use heater is the better answer

If only one remote basin has low demand, a small point-of-use heater located near that outlet can reduce the water wasted while waiting for hot water to travel through a long pipe. ENERGY STAR identifies point-of-use equipment and insulated hot-water pipe runs as ways to reduce distribution losses. This is not automatically the best solution for a shower: verify flow, temperature, electrical load, and local wet-area rules first.

Decision checklist

  1. Record the number of people, showers, and likely simultaneous fixtures.
  2. Measure fixture flow and identify the busiest realistic combination.
  3. Find the coldest incoming-water temperature and choose the target outlet temperature.
  4. Check your electricity tariff, including off-peak or solar availability.
  5. Ask an electrician to verify voltage, phase, main-service capacity, breaker, cable, earthing, and RCD/GFCI requirements.
  6. Ask a plumber to verify pressure, flow, pipe size, relief-valve discharge, mounting, and installation zones.
  7. Compare a storage tank’s usable volume, first-hour rating, and recovery with an instant unit’s rated flow at the same temperature rise.
  8. Confirm the product’s required safety certification and the installer’s compliance documentation before ordering.

Bottom line for common bathroom situations

Situation Usually the better fit Reason
Several family members shower one after another Storage Stored volume buffers demand and does not require extreme instantaneous power
Two fixtures may run together Correctly sized storage or high-capacity instant Instant must meet the combined flow at the required temperature rise
Very small bathroom with one intermittent user Instant Compact and avoids tank standby loss, provided electrical capacity is adequate
Limited electrical service or single-phase supply Storage High-power instant models may require a service upgrade or provide limited flow
Reliable off-peak tariff Storage The tank can heat during lower-cost periods
One distant, low-flow basin Point-of-use option Can reduce distribution losses when correctly sized and safely installed

For a typical family bathroom, select a properly sized storage geyser unless a qualified installer confirms that an instant model can deliver every expected fixture’s flow at the required temperature rise and that the property can safely supply its electrical load. For a small, intermittent bathroom with limited space and strong electrical capacity, instant can be the more efficient and convenient choice.
