To automatically remove old files on Windows, use Storage Sense. It can regularly clear temporary files and, if you choose, delete items from the Recycle Bin or files in Downloads that have not been opened for a set period. For cloud files, it can remove inactive local copies while keeping them in OneDrive. Cleanup recommendations and Disk Cleanup are useful alternatives, but they require you to review and select what to remove.
Choose the right Windows cleanup method
These options differ in what they remove and whether they run on a schedule. Storage Sense is the only general-purpose option here for recurring cleanup based on settings you choose; the other two tools ask you to review categories or files first.

1. Set Storage Sense to remove local files automatically
Storage Sense is the closest match to a recurring, age-based cleanup. It works on the Windows system drive, not as a sweep of every drive or arbitrary folder. It applies to the current user. Microsoft says it needs the user to be signed in and online for more than 10 minutes to run.

- Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense.
- Turn on Storage Sense and choose how often it should run, or configure it to run when the device is low on disk space.
- Choose how long items may remain in the Recycle Bin before Windows removes them.
- If you want Downloads cleaned, set how long files can go unopened before deletion. Downloads are not removed unless you configure this rule.
Check the thresholds before enabling them: an old file can still be important, and Storage Sense’s Downloads rule can delete a file you have not opened within the selected period. Move files you want to keep elsewhere before they reach that threshold.

Find the setting in Windows 10
Windows 10 labels and navigation can vary by release. Open Storage settings and follow the Storage Sense configuration link; verify the displayed schedule and retention options on your version before relying on them.
2. Use Storage Sense to free space from OneDrive files
For OneDrive content, Storage Sense can make inactive local copies online-only. This frees local drive space without deleting the cloud file. A file marked Always keep on this device is exempt from this space-saving behavior.

Making a file online-only is different from deleting it: the file remains in OneDrive, but you need an internet connection to download it again for local use. This is not automatic under default settings; configure the relevant cloud-content controls in Storage Sense. If you need offline access, keep the file on the device rather than allowing it to become online-only.
3. Review Cleanup recommendations before removing files
Use Cleanup recommendations when you want Windows to identify potential space savings but do not want a scheduled deletion rule. It can present groups such as temporary files, large or unused files, cloud-synced files, and unused apps. Review the selections and remove only what you recognize and no longer need. This is a review-based cleanup, not recurring age-based deletion.

4. Select categories in Disk Cleanup
Disk Cleanup provides another manual route for removing selected temporary and system-file categories. Open the utility, choose the drive, review the available categories, and select only those you intend to remove. It does not provide a general schedule for automatically deleting old personal files.

After a Windows upgrade, the previous installation is a special case rather than a general old-file rule. Microsoft says Windows automatically deletes the previous Windows version 10 days after the upgrade. Removing it sooner also removes the option to roll back to that version, and the removal cannot be undone. Keep it until you are confident you do not need to return to the previous Windows installation.

Keep important files out of automatic cleanup
- Do not set a Downloads or Recycle Bin retention period until you understand what it will remove.
- Move files you want to retain out of Downloads or the Recycle Bin before the configured threshold.
- For OneDrive, distinguish between a local copy becoming online-only and the file being deleted from cloud storage.
- If you want to keep personal files but free space, move them to an external storage device. An external drive can serve as an archive destination, but it does not automate deletion.
