To stop a Samsung Galaxy phone screen from rotating, open Quick settings and tap Auto rotate. It changes to Portrait or Landscape, locking the screen in its current orientation. Choose the lock that matches how you want the phone held; tap the lock again to restore Auto rotate.
Lock the screen in the position you want

Swipe down from the top-right edge of the screen to open Quick settings.

Find the orientation control. If it says Auto rotate, the phone can change orientation as you turn it.

Hold the phone in the position you want to keep, then tap Auto rotate. The control changes to Portrait or Landscape, indicating that orientation is locked.

To let the screen rotate again, tap Portrait or Landscape to return to Auto rotate.
Choose Portrait to keep the phone upright, or Landscape to keep it sideways. The lock is based on the phone’s position when you tap Auto rotate. Samsung’s instructions: turn screen rotation on or off.

Can’t find the Auto rotate control?
It may have been removed from the Quick settings panel. Open Quick settings and use its edit controls to add the orientation control back. The exact route depends on the Galaxy model and software: Samsung’s examples use a pencil or Edit button, while other versions may put editing under a three-dot menu. Look for Auto rotate among the available buttons and add it to the panel. Samsung describes the panel-editing options in its Galaxy rotation instructions.

Check which orientation setting is active
The label tells you whether rotation is locked: a highlighted Auto rotate control means automatic rotation is enabled; Portrait or Landscape means the phone is locked to that orientation. If you expected the screen to stop moving but still see Auto rotate, tap it while the phone is in your preferred position.

Adjust rotation for specific screens
On some models and software versions, touching and holding the Auto rotate control opens extra options. These can include rotation behavior for the Home screen, Lock screen, or Voice call screen. Options vary by device; Samsung notes that the Home screen option is not available on tablets. See Samsung Canada’s screen-rotation guidance for its description of these controls.

Check the app
Some apps or individual app screens use a fixed orientation chosen by their developers. The phone’s rotation lock may not change how those screens appear. Test the setting in another app that supports the orientation you want.

Refresh the phone’s software and settings
If Auto rotate is on but the screen never responds in apps that should rotate, check for available software updates and restart the phone. Samsung includes these steps in its screen-rotation troubleshooting guidance.

If the phone has physical screen damage, Samsung recommends contacting Support to arrange service. A rotation setting cannot resolve damage-related problems.
