On iPhone, turn off Change with Buttons in Settings > Sounds & Haptics. Apple says the physical volume buttons then control media playback only, rather than ringtone and alert volume. Android and Samsung Galaxy do not have a documented universal equivalent, so the steps depend on the device and software version.
iPhone: keep the buttons from changing ringtone and alert volume
- Open Settings.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Turn off Change with Buttons.
With this setting off, Apple says the volume buttons control media playback only. You can still set ringtone volume with the slider in Sounds & Haptics, and change ringtones or individual alert sounds there. Apple’s iPhone sound and vibration guide explains the relevant controls.
Android: check the volume controls for your device
Android separates volume into categories such as media, calls, ringtone, notifications and alarms. To view the available levels, press a volume button and open the volume menu. The exact controls vary by Android version and manufacturer; Google’s instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 12 and later. Google’s documentation does not establish a universal setting that stops physical buttons from changing ringtone and notification volume on every Android phone. See Google’s guide to changing volume, sound and vibration settings, then check your phone’s own sound settings.

Galaxy phones and tablets have sound and notification controls in their settings, but Samsung’s available guidance does not confirm a universal switch that limits the physical volume buttons in the same way as iPhone’s Change with Buttons. Check the sound settings on your specific Galaxy model and verify the menu names against its software version. Samsung’s Galaxy sound settings guidance describes the device controls.
