To stop autoplay, first identify what is starting: the next YouTube video, a Netflix episode, a Netflix browsing preview, or a video in a social-media feed. Those behaviors use different controls. YouTube’s setting is on the player or device; Netflix keeps separate preview and next-episode settings on each profile. Social-app menus can change, and some apps do not offer a complete autoplay-off switch.
Choose the autoplay control that matches what you want to stop
| Service | What starts automatically | Where to look | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Another related video after the current one ends | Autoplay switch on the player; settings can be device-specific | Turn it off separately on devices where you watch. |
| Netflix | Previews while browsing, or the next episode | Separate playback settings for each profile | Disable the relevant toggle; refresh the device if the change does not appear. |
| Facebook, Bluesky, X | Videos or previews in feeds and other surfaces | Reported media, content, or data-usage settings | Paths are based on September 2025 reporting and may differ by app version. |
| Instagram, TikTok, Threads | Videos in feeds | No complete general autoplay-off control was reported for these services in September 2025 | Muting or limiting content is not the same as stopping playback. |
Turn off autoplay on YouTube
YouTube’s Autoplay control governs what happens after the video you are watching finishes; it is not a general switch for every video preview in the app. YouTube describes it this way: “When Autoplay is on, another related video will automatically play after a video ends.” See YouTube Help: Autoplay videos.
- Phone or tablet: Open a video and switch off Autoplay at the top of the player. You can also use Profile picture > Settings > Autoplay on Android or iOS.
- Computer: Open a video and switch off Autoplay at the bottom of the player.
- TV: In the YouTube app, open Settings and select Autoplay.
- Casting: Use the Autoplay control in the control bar on the connected mobile device.
YouTube says settings may differ by device. If videos continue to queue on a TV or another device after you switched Autoplay off on your phone, check the control on that device too.
Stop Netflix previews or the next episode
Netflix has two distinct profile settings. Turn off the one that matches the behavior you want to stop; they are not a single universal autoplay switch.

- On the web: Go to Account > Profiles, select the profile, open Playback settings, and turn off Autoplay Previews.
Netflix says previews can play automatically to help you find a show or movie. Some devices, including iPads and certain older TVs and streaming devices, do not support preview autoplay. See Netflix Help: How to turn autoplay previews on or off.
Stop the next episode from starting
- On mobile: In Manage Profiles, choose the profile and turn off Autoplay Next Episode.
- On the web: Go to Account > Profiles, select the profile, open Playback settings, and turn off Autoplay Next Episode.
This setting controls whether Netflix automatically plays the next episode in a series. See Netflix Help: How to play the next episode automatically.

September 2025 reporting said Instagram did not offer a complete general switch to stop feed autoplay. Videos may begin silently until you enable sound; muting them does not mean they no longer play. Axios also reported that TikTok did not allow users to turn off autoplay completely, though it described ways to reduce exposure to unwanted videos. TechCrunch reported no autoplay-off option for Threads at that time. These are time-sensitive reports, not guarantees about current menus or future features. Sources: TechCrunch and Axios.

Facebook teen autoplay controls: what Meta announced
In August 2026, Meta announced an agreement with bipartisan state attorneys general under which teens would be able to turn off autoplay and parents could require that setting. The announcement describes an intended teen control; it does not establish that the feature is already available to every teen account, specify a universal app path, or say that adults have the same option. See Meta’s announcement.
