To stop a repeat caller, add its number in the Samsung Phone app under More options → Settings → Block numbers. For broader filtering, look separately for unknown-caller blocking, Caller ID and spam protection, or—on supported newer phones—Call screening. Which controls appear and how they work can vary by Galaxy model, software version, carrier, and region.
Block a specific number
Samsung’s documented U.S. route is through the Phone app. You can add a number directly or select a recent caller or saved contact.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Tap Block numbers.
- Enter the number and add it, or choose an entry from Recents, Messages, or Contacts, if those choices appear.
Samsung also documents blocking from the call interface on supported versions. The exact control may differ, so use the blocked-number list in Phone settings if you cannot find it during or after a call. Samsung’s call-settings instructions and its Phone app guide describe these options.
Block unknown or unspecified callers
In Phone → More options → Settings → Block numbers, look for Block calls from unknown numbers. Turn it on only after reading the description shown on your phone. “Unknown” or “unspecified” does not necessarily mean the same thing as every number that is not saved in Contacts, and Samsung does not establish identical behavior across all software builds and carriers.

Broad blocking can affect legitimate calls from people or organizations whose numbers you have not saved, such as delivery drivers, clinics, schools, or new customers. If you rely on calls like these, consider leaving the option off or reviewing your blocked-call list after enabling it. Samsung notes that availability and call settings can vary; see its call-settings guidance for Canada.
Filter suspected spam and scam calls
Spam protection is distinct from manually blocking a number: it can identify or filter calls that the phone treats as spam or scams. Samsung documents this path in the Phone app:

- Open Phone, tap More options, then Settings.
- Open Caller ID and spam protection. Enable it and review or accept any terms presented on your device.
- Choose Block spam and scam calls, if available.
- Select the filtering level offered: Block all spam and scam calls or Only block high-risk scam calls.
The first choice aims for stronger filtering, while the high-risk option is narrower. Either approach can mean a wanted call is flagged, so choose based on how important it is to receive calls from numbers you do not recognize. Samsung also describes a block-and-report action during or after an incoming call. See its Samsung Phone app instructions for the documented controls.

Check for Call screening and AI Scam detection
Call screening
Samsung says Call screening is available only on Galaxy phones running Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher. If supported on your phone, open Phone → More options → Settings → Call screening. Samsung describes automatic screening for unknown callers, with language and assistant-voice settings available. Meeting the software requirement alone does not confirm that the feature has rolled out for a particular model or country. Check the Phone app itself for the setting. AI Scam detection
Samsung gives the same minimum software level—Android 16 with One UI 8.5 or higher—for AI Scam detection. The feature can provide tone or vibration alerts, after which you can decide whether to block or answer. It is a separate feature from manually adding a number to the blocked list, and its presence should be verified on the device. See Samsung’s AI Scam detection guide.

- Search Phone settings for Block numbers, Caller ID and spam protection, or Call screening; menu names and available controls can differ.
- Confirm the number was added to the blocked list, especially if you selected it from Recents or Contacts.
- For broad unknown-caller blocking, read the on-screen description and check the blocked-call list to understand what the setting is affecting.
- Ask your carrier or Samsung support about availability for your exact model, software build, carrier, and region. Samsung’s Canada guidance, last updated August 29, 2026, specifically notes that call settings and features can vary by provider and software version, and that Smart Call may not be available on some carriers or models.
Carrier call-filtering services or call-filtering apps are another category to investigate if the built-in controls are unavailable or insufficient. The FCC’s DA 21-772 discusses call-filtering options historically, but it is from 2021 and does not verify which services or prices are currently offered.
