If your Windows 11 Start menu keeps changing between six and eight columns, the cause is not established. Start by checking whether the selected display, resolution, or scaling changes when the layout does. Microsoft recommends the display’s marked “Recommended” resolution and says an unexpected resolution change may mean the graphics driver needs updating. Those checks are sensible diagnostics, not a confirmed cause or guaranteed fix.
What is known about the six-to-eight-column change
One Windows 11 user reported the Start menu switching between six and eight columns on a system set to 2560×1440 resolution and 100% scaling. The user suspected a game might briefly change the desktop resolution, but did not confirm that as the trigger. In that account, restarting explorer.exe brought back eight columns temporarily; later, the menu remained at six. This is an individual report, not evidence that the issue is widespread or that restarting Explorer is a reliable fix. Read the user report.
Check whether display settings change with the layout
- Open Settings > System > Display. If you use multiple monitors, select the display where the Start menu appears.
- Record the resolution and scale. Check them when the menu has eight columns, then again after it switches to six. Also note whether the selected display changed.
- Use the recommended resolution. Microsoft advises choosing the resolution marked “Recommended.” If the resolution changes unexpectedly, Microsoft says the graphics driver might need updating. Look for a repeatable trigger
Keep a short record of when the column count changes and what happened immediately beforehand. Note the Windows edition, version, and build, and whether the change follows any of these events:
- Launching or closing a game
- Connecting or disconnecting a monitor
- Waking the PC from sleep or signing in
- Installing a Windows or graphics-driver update
These are useful events to track, not confirmed causes. The reported game-related explanation is only a hypothesis; available documentation does not link a particular game, driver change, scaling threshold, update, or Windows build to this symptom.

Use Start controls documented for your Windows version
Microsoft’s Start guidance says Windows 11 remembers the last-used view for Pinned and All. The reviewed guidance does not document a Windows 11 setting that locks the menu to six or eight columns. Its instructions for dragging Start’s edges to resize it and enabling full-screen Start apply to Windows 10, so they should not be treated as Windows 11 steps. What to try if the layout changes again
Restart Explorer only as a temporary test
The user report says restarting explorer.exe restored eight columns temporarily, but it does not establish this as a dependable fix. If you try it, note whether the layout changes immediately and whether it stays that way after the next sign-in or trigger. Do not treat a temporary change as proof of the underlying cause.

Do not apply managed-layout fixes without evidence of a policy issue
Microsoft’s Start troubleshooting guidance discusses managed-layout configuration problems, including malformed XML or unexpected layout values. It does not identify the six-to-eight-column switch as a known issue. Unless the PC is managed or you have evidence that an organization’s policy or a provisioned layout is involved, those XML troubleshooting steps are not a targeted fix for this behavior. What the available guidance does not establish
- That the behavior is a widespread Windows 11 bug.
- That a game, resolution change, scaling setting, driver update, or Windows update causes it.
- That a particular Start size choice will lock the column count on every Windows 11 build.
- That restarting Explorer fixes the behavior reliably.
A forum reply mentions Start size choices such as default, small, and large, but that reply does not establish which builds have the choices or whether they prevent the layout from changing. Check current official guidance for your specific Windows build before relying on such a control.
