To manage a child’s Google Play purchase approvals, open Family Link, select the child, then go to Controls > Google Play > Require approval for. Choose whether approval is needed for all content, paid content, in-app purchases, or nothing. The setting applies to purchases made through Google Play billing—not every charge or transaction on the child’s device.
Choose which Google Play activity needs approval
Google provides approval controls in Family Link and the Play Store. The options and labels differ slightly by app, so use the wording shown on your device.

Family Link’s “Paid content only” and the Play Store’s “All purchases that use the family payment method” are not identical labels. Check the option descriptions in your own app and choose the scope that matches what you want to approve.

- Open Family Link and select the child’s account.
- Tap Controls > Google Play.
- Under Purchases and download approvals, tap Require approval for. If that exact heading is not shown, look for the purchase-approval setting under the child’s Google Play controls.
- Select the approval level you want. Google documents the Family Link choices as All content, Paid content only, In-app purchases only, or Never.
You can also change the setting in the Android Play Store or on the family page using the paths above. Google documents those interfaces with slightly different option names. Approve or deny a child’s request
Paid purchases
For a paid request, Google’s documented flow has the parent review it and enter their Google Account password on the child’s device to approve. The child can withdraw a pending paid request from Google Play Order History. After a purchase completed through Play billing, Google says the family manager receives an email receipt.
Free content
For a free item, the child can choose Ask in a message or Ask now. With Ask in a message, the parent receives a notification and can review the request details before approving or denying it. With Ask now, the parent reviews the item on the child’s device; approval requires the parent’s Google Account password there.

To find pending free-content requests, open the Play Store and go to Profile > Settings > Family > Manage approval requests, or check Notifications in Family Link. If notifications are disabled for Family Link or the Play Store, request alerts may not arrive; check the notification settings in those apps if a request seems to be missing.
Understand what purchase approvals do—and do not—cover
Google states that purchase approval settings apply only to purchases made through Google Play’s billing system. They are not a universal block on charges made from a child’s device. Google’s request flow can cover paid apps, in-app purchases, and prepaid subscriptions, but excludes Play Books, Google TV, and non-prepaid subscriptions.

A family payment method is a separate setting. Google says it can be used for Google Play apps, books, movies, games, TV shows, and magazine issues, but not subscriptions, Google Store devices, Google Play balance, Google Pay purchases, or alternative billing systems. The family manager is responsible for purchases made using the shared family payment method. See Google Play Help: Set up a family payment method for its scope and exclusions.
If the family has no family payment method, a family member may request approval and the manager can complete the purchase using a payment method on the manager’s own Google Play account, including a Google Play gift card. If a family payment method has been added, this request route is unavailable. A gift card is only one possible payment method for that scenario; it is not required to set up purchase approvals.

Why a download may not trigger a new approval
Some app downloads do not prompt again even when approvals are enabled. Google says previously installed or approved apps, as well as eligible apps in Play Family Library, do not require additional approval.
