If a Pine Script signal appears while a bar is forming, disappears at the close, changes after a chart reload, or disagrees with an alert or strategy result, first identify which behavior changed. A value moving on an open bar can be expected; a signal that appears in the past or depends on future data is a different problem. TradingView uses repainting as an umbrella term for differences between historical and realtime calculations, not as proof that a script is defective.

What changed: an open-bar signal, a reload, or a signal moved into the past?

Reproduce the behavior before editing the code. Watch the signal while its chart bar is open, record whether it remains after the bar closes, then reload the chart and compare the result. Keep these cases separate:

  • It vanishes before the bar closes: the condition may have been true only during an intrabar price move.
  • It remains at the close but differs after reload: check higher-timeframe data, realtime-only logic, and changes to the available feed or chart history.
  • It later appears on an earlier bar: inspect code that plots or draws events into the past, as well as higher-timeframe requests that may expose future values historically.
  • An alert or strategy disagrees with the plotted marker: inspect alert timing and strategy execution settings separately from the chart plot.

These outcomes have different causes. TradingView’s repainting documentation explains both expected differences between open and historical bars and potentially misleading past plotting.

Why can a Pine Script signal disappear before a bar closes?

An open bar does not yet have its final high, low, or close. Those values can change with each realtime feed update, and an indicator can recalculate as new updates arrive. As TradingView explains, “Any script using values like high, low and close in realtime is subject to producing calculations that may not be repeatable on historical bars — thus repaint.”

The Pine Script execution model also matters: before an indicator’s next execution on an open bar, the runtime rolls applicable state back to the last committed state. It commits the final execution when the bar closes. Historical bars show their confirmed outcomes, not every price movement and intermediate calculation that occurred while they were live.

Trace the condition that generates the marker and each value feeding it. If it uses the current bar’s high, low, or close, ask whether that value can cross the condition intrabar and then move back before the close. A signal that responds to such a change is not necessarily broken; it is a developing-bar signal, not a confirmed one.

How can you make a chart signal wait for confirmation?

If a marker should appear only after its chart bar is confirmed, gate the condition with barstate.isconfirmed. For example:

if signalCondition and barstate.isconfirmed
// Place the confirmed signal logic here

TradingView documents barstate.isconfirmed as true on historical bars and on the closing update of a realtime bar. It can make a signal wait for the bar’s final values, but that confirmation costs immediacy: the signal arrives at the close rather than during the bar. The flag does not work inside a request.security() call. See TradingView’s bar states documentation.

Another approach is to base the decision on a preceding bar’s values. That also means acting on a completed bar rather than relying on the current bar’s changing values. Choose between these approaches according to the intended timing of the signal:

Approach Values used Timing trade-off Important constraint
Gate with barstate.isconfirmed Current chart-bar condition after the bar is confirmed Waits for the closing update Does not work inside request.security()
Use preceding-bar values Values from a completed earlier bar Uses an earlier bar’s information rather than an unconfirmed current-bar value Signal logic must be designed for the previous-bar input

Confirmation stabilizes when the condition is allowed to become final; it does not establish that a trading signal is profitable or safe.

Could a higher-timeframe request be changing after reload?

Audit every request.security() call that requests a higher timeframe. While a higher-timeframe bar is developing, a request can return unconfirmed values in realtime. After a restart, historical calculations may use confirmed values instead, so the script can behave differently.

TradingView’s documented stable pattern offsets the requested expression by one bar and pairs that offset with barmerge.lookahead_on. For example:

request.security(syminfo.tickerid, timeframe, ta.wma(close, length)[1], lookahead = barmerge.lookahead_on)

The offset is essential. Using barmerge.lookahead_on with an unoffset current-bar expression can expose a higher-timeframe bar’s final value on earlier historical bars. TradingView describes the offset-plus-lookahead pattern in its other timeframes and data documentation, which calls past-bar expressions with barmerge.lookahead_on the most reliable approach to non-repainting results.

Why did an alert fire before the plotted signal settled?

An alert can trigger while a realtime bar is still open, before its condition settles. If the alert should wait for confirmation, select Once Per Bar Close when configuring its frequency. This controls when the alert fires; it does not correct a problematic higher-timeframe request, a marker plotted into the past, or another repainting cause. TradingView explains alert frequency in its alerts FAQ.

Check the alert’s intended confirmation point against the plotted signal: should both respond intrabar, or should both wait until the chart bar closes? A frequency choice that does not match that intent can make an otherwise understandable signal and alert appear inconsistent.

Why can a strategy backtest disagree with realtime behavior?

Check whether the strategy uses calc_on_every_tick = true. With that setting, a strategy can execute on realtime price updates, but historical bars do not contain the same sequence of intrabar price movements. Its live order behavior can therefore diverge from calculations on historical bars; a conventional backtest may not reproduce that realtime behavior. TradingView documents this difference in its repainting guidance and execution model.

Also look for logic that depends on realtime updates ordinary historical bars cannot reconstruct:

  • varip can retain state across realtime updates that ordinary historical OHLC data does not preserve.
  • timenow cannot produce consistent historical and realtime behavior.

These features may serve realtime purposes, but historical plots and backtests cannot reproduce the full live sequence they observed. Treat that as a limit on what a historical result can demonstrate, not as evidence that the backtest captures every live execution.

What should you conclude after the checks?

Classify the behavior by what actually changed, then decide whether it fits the script’s intended use. A developing value that settles at the close is different from a historical marker shifted into the past; a confirmed signal is different from one that depends on realtime-only state. Repainting is not automatically a bug, but users should be able to tell when a signal is provisional, when it becomes final, and whether its historical behavior represents its live behavior.

Not every difference originates in script logic. TradingView notes that data-feed revisions and changes in chart history can also alter results. After checking the code and execution settings, compare the available chart data before attributing every changed result to a script defect.
