Switching Android Auto from wireless projection to a USB connection is a sensible troubleshooting test if your phone heats up in the car—but it is not a proven fix. The setting disables wireless Android Auto; whether that changes heat on your phone depends on your vehicle, phone, workload and surroundings.
What the wireless projection setting changes
Android Auto supports both wireless and USB-cable connections. Its developer option for wireless projection controls whether the phone can use the wireless mode; turning it off means you will need a wired connection for Android Auto, if your phone and vehicle support one. Google documents the two setup methods separately, and recommends Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services remain on while completing wireless setup: Google’s Android Auto setup instructions.
The option is not a phone-temperature control. The available documentation does not establish that disabling wireless projection reliably prevents overheating. Trying a cable can help you determine whether connection mode contributes on your particular setup.

The exact menus can vary with Android Auto version, Android release and phone maker. - Park before changing settings. Open Android Auto settings on your phone.
- Tap the version or build information repeatedly until developer settings are enabled, if your version uses that method.
- Open the Android Auto developer settings menu and look for the wireless projection option. Turn it off.
- Connect the phone to the car with a data-capable USB cable and follow any on-screen setup prompts.
These steps reflect the dated service communication, not a guaranteed menu path for every device. If the labels differ, consult current instructions for your Android Auto version and phone. Tom’s Guide also describes a wireless Android Auto developer switch, though its article discusses sideloaded apps rather than overheating: Tom’s Guide’s description of Android Auto developer options.
Check that your phone and car support the connection
Wired and wireless availability depends on the specific phone and vehicle. Chevrolet notes that wireless Android Auto works only with select phones and vehicles, and recommends using the phone manufacturer’s cable to avoid connectivity problems. A cable should support data, not just charging. See Chevrolet’s Android Auto compatibility and connection guidance.

Run a useful heat test
Change one factor at a time so you can tell whether the connection mode makes a difference. Compare wireless use with wired use on a similar trip, keeping the phone, mount, navigation app and streaming workload as consistent as practical. Note whether the phone still heats up; one drive cannot establish a general result, and a cooler result does not prove the setting alone caused the change.

Wireless versus wired should not be ranked as universally cooler. A USB connection may also introduce charging as a separate factor, so pay attention to how the phone behaves in your own setup rather than assuming the cable will reduce heat.
Reduce other common contributors
Navigation, location tracking and music streaming can run at the same time. Warm surroundings, direct sun and restricted airflow around a mounted phone may add to the load. CHIGEE support recommends reducing unnecessary background activity, avoiding direct sunlight and improving airflow; this is manufacturer guidance, not a controlled thermal study. CHIGEE’s guidance on phone heat during in-car projection.

- Move the phone out of direct sunlight and avoid covering it or trapping it in a poorly ventilated spot.
- Close background activity you do not need during the drive.
- If heat is strongest with one navigation app, compare it with another supported navigation app while keeping the rest of the setup similar. This is a troubleshooting comparison, not evidence that a particular app is defective.
If the phone still gets hot
If changing connection mode and improving airflow do not help, the CHIGEE support guidance suggests trying another phone model, considering battery condition and contacting the phone manufacturer for device-specific support. Those steps can help distinguish a phone-specific issue from one tied to the car setup; they do not identify a diagnosis by themselves.
Make setting changes and cable connections while parked. Google’s safety instruction is: “Drive safely. Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.”
