Termix is a free, open-source, self-hosted server-management platform that keeps a central inventory of hosts and credentials while offering web, desktop and mobile clients. Its plugin system adds SSH, SFTP, container management, remote desktops, tunnels, monitoring and automation, making it a broad alternative for people who do not want their server data tied to a vendor cloud.
What Termix is
The Termix-SSH project describes Termix as “a free, open source, self-hosted server management platform built on plugins.” The same project says it runs on web, desktop and mobile and positions it as a self-hosted alternative to a hosted server-management app.
The important distinction is where your control plane lives. You run the Termix server, then connect to it from a browser, a desktop application or a phone/tablet client. Your host list, reusable credentials, folders and access settings are managed in that central account rather than recreated separately on each device.
How the cross-device setup works
- Run the Termix server. The documented deployment method uses Docker Compose on a machine you control.
- Open the web interface. The Compose example publishes Termix on port 8080. Use the server address and that port to reach the application from a browser on your network.
- Add hosts and credentials once. Save SSH servers, passwords and keys in the core inventory. Organize them with folders or tags instead of maintaining separate lists on your laptop and phone.
- Install a client on each device. The project lists browser access plus Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android distributions.
- Link desktop clients to the server. Termix documents an offline account copy for the desktop application, so the desktop client can retain account data while linked to the central server.
This is synchronization through your own Termix instance, not a promise that every client has identical offline behavior. Confirm the client and plugin versions you plan to deploy, because platform and plugin availability can change between releases.

What is stored and protected
Termix’s core is an inventory and access layer rather than only a terminal window. Documented features include saved hosts, reusable passwords and keys, folders, tags, sharing roles, sessions, trusted devices, API keys and an audit log.
- Secrets are encrypted per user.
- The database can be encrypted on disk.
- Sharing roles let an administrator control how resources are exposed to other users.
- Trusted devices and API keys provide account-management controls beyond a single SSH session.
- Passkeys and TOTP are available through account-security functionality in the plugin ecosystem.
Those statements describe the project’s documented design. They are not a substitute for an independent security audit, and the repository does not establish a particular compliance certification, uptime SLA or support commitment. Treat the Termix host, its Docker environment and its backups as sensitive infrastructure.

The 800MHz VideoCore VII GPU is compatible to OpenGL ES 3.1 and Vulkan 1.2, substantial uplift in graphics performance. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
More than SSH: the plugin coverage
Plugins are the reason Termix can serve as a general server-management console instead of a single-purpose SSH client.
| Plugin area | Documented capability |
|---|---|
| SSH | Interactive terminal sessions |
| SFTP | File management and transfer |
| Containers | Docker and Podman management |
| Remote desktop | RDP, VNC and Telnet connections |
| Networking | Tunnels |
| Operations | Metrics and automations |
| Sessions | Recording and sharing |
| Infrastructure | Proxmox management |
| Account security | Passkeys and TOTP options |
Availability is plugin- and release-dependent. If you need a particular protocol, check that the relevant plugin is included in the client and server versions you will run.

Deploying Termix with Docker Compose
The project’s README supplies a Compose deployment built around the image ghcr.io/termix-ssh/termix:latest, port 8080 and a persistent named volume called termix-data. Use the README’s Compose file unchanged so the volume mount and any release-specific settings match the current image.
- Install Docker Engine and the Docker Compose plugin on a machine that will stay available to your clients.
- Copy the project’s Compose example to that machine. Keep the image name, port mapping and
termix-datapersistent volume from the example. - From the directory containing the Compose file, run
docker compose up -d. - Verify that the container is running, then open the host on port
8080in a browser. - Complete the initial account setup, add a test host and confirm an SSH session before importing your full inventory.
- Install the desktop or mobile distribution and point it at the same Termix server. Test sign-in, host access and any offline behavior before relying on it during an outage.
A persistent volume is essential: deleting the container without preserving termix-data can remove the application’s stored state. Back up the volume and protect the Docker host just as you would any system that holds administrative credentials.

Where Termix fits against a hosted server manager
| Decision area | Termix’s documented position | What you must decide |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | Self-hosted; Docker Compose deployment is documented | Whether you want to operate the server, storage and backups |
| Client coverage | Web, desktop and mobile, with Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS/iPadOS and Android distributions listed | Which clients and versions your devices can run |
| Credential handling | Per-user secret encryption and optional database encryption on disk | How you will protect the host, keys, backups and recovery methods |
| Protocol breadth | SSH, SFTP, Docker, Podman, RDP, VNC, Telnet, tunnels, metrics and automation through plugins | Whether the required plugin is available and maintained for your release |
| Offline use | Desktop app can link to a Termix server and retain an offline account copy | Which operations must work without server connectivity |
| Team controls | Sharing roles, trusted devices, API keys and audit log | How finely you need to delegate access and review activity |
| License | Apache 2.0 | Whether that license fits your organization’s policies |
This model can eliminate a recurring hosted-app subscription, but the project does not provide a current one-to-one pricing comparison with any particular plan, and your own costs may include a VPS, storage, backups and administration time.

Practical limitations to check before switching
- No guaranteed migration path: the repository does not establish one-click import from a specific account or plan. Plan to recreate or transform your host and credential inventory, and test a small set first.
- You own reliability: a self-hosted instance depends on your machine, network, Docker runtime, upgrades and backups.
- Security evidence has limits: documented encryption features do not establish that the entire system has passed an independent audit.
- Release behavior can change: image tags, client distributions and plugins may evolve. Pin and test versions appropriate for your environment rather than assuming
latestwill remain unchanged. - Connectivity still matters: if your Termix server is unreachable, clients cannot use the central inventory. The desktop offline copy helps with documented desktop scenarios but is not a universal offline guarantee.
Who should use it
Termix is a strong fit for a technically comfortable individual, homelab operator or small team that wants one inventory across computers and mobile devices while retaining control of hosting. Its advantage grows when you need more than SSH: file transfer, container operations, remote-desktop protocols, tunnels, metrics and shared sessions in one interface.
Best Value
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)

It is a poorer fit if you want a vendor-operated service with a published uptime commitment, hands-off upgrades and a guaranteed import from an existing commercial account. In that case, the operational work of running Docker, securing the host and maintaining backups may outweigh the subscription you hoped to remove.
