Misleading ads on an Android phone are not always browser pop-up windows. A site may have permission to send notifications, a malicious page may be redirecting Chrome, or an unwanted app may be displaying ads over other apps. Fix the problem in layers: disable Chrome pop-ups and redirects, revoke the offending site’s notification permission, keep Safe Browsing enabled, and use Android Safe mode and Play Protect if ads appear across sites or apps.
First identify what kind of popup you are seeing
The correct fix depends on where the message appears. A new browser window, a notification in the Android shade, and a full-screen warning from an unwanted app are different problems even when the wording looks similar.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| A new tab, window, or page opens while browsing | Chrome pop-up or redirect, or a page deliberately redirecting you | Turn off Pop-ups and redirects in Chrome |
| An “urgent virus” or “update now” message appears as an Android notification | A website has notification permission | Open the site’s Page info > Permissions and disable notifications |
| Ads appear on many unrelated sites | An unwanted app, abusive notification permission, or repeated redirects | Check site permissions, then investigate recently installed apps in Safe mode |
| Ads appear over the home screen or other apps | Usually an unwanted Android app rather than an ordinary Chrome popup | Restart in Safe mode and remove recently installed apps |
| Chrome displays a red “Dangerous site” warning | Google Safe Browsing has identified a potentially unsafe page | Do not continue to the site |
Do not tap a popup that claims your phone is infected, demands an immediate update, or offers a “cleaner.” Close the tab or notification using Android’s normal controls. For software downloads, navigate to the maker’s official site yourself instead of following the popup.
Turn off Chrome pop-ups and redirects
Chrome for Android blocks pop-ups automatically by default, but the setting is worth checking after a browser reset, an accidental change, or troubleshooting. Google’s Chrome Help describes the default behavior this way: “By default, Google Chrome blocks pop-ups from automatically showing up on your screen.”
#1 Best Overall
- VLAN Network Segregation: This router includes five preconfigured VLANs that isolate IoT devices, guest users, and work systems into separate, secure networks. Each LAN port and every WiFi SSID can be assigned to a VLAN, giving you complete control over how traffic flows inside your home.
- Dual VPN Client and Server Support: The router works as both a VPN client and a VPN server, supporting OpenVPN, IPsec, and WireGuard. You can route selected VLANs through a VPN while keeping others on your regular ISP connection, giving each device group the exact level of privacy it needs.
- Full WiFi 6 on Both Bands: With dual-band WiFi 6 support, the router delivers modern wireless performance across 2.4GHz b/g/n/ax and 5GHz a/n/ac/ax. It improves capacity, stability, and speed while remaining compatible with older devices, making it ideal for busy homes with many connections. Wi-Fi Mesh is available after firmware update.
- High-Performance Hardware Architecture: Powered by the IPQ6000 quad-core ARM processor at 1.2GHz, along with 128MB flash, 256MB RAM, and hardware NAT acceleration, the router handles multitasking, streaming, VPN traffic, and VLAN isolation smoothly without slowing your network.
- Flexible and Powerful Parental Controls: You can use trusted services like OpenDNS, CleanBrowsing, and Cloudflare for filtering, then add custom block lists, allow lists, and schedules. The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More, the three-dot button, near the address bar.
- Tap Settings.
- Under the privacy and security options, open Site settings.
- Tap Pop-ups and redirects.
- Turn the setting off so sites cannot open pop-up windows or redirect Chrome automatically.
Menu wording can vary slightly by Chrome version or device manufacturer, but the sequence remains under Chrome’s Settings and Site settings. If the switch is already off and you still receive alerts, you are probably dealing with notifications or an unwanted app rather than a conventional pop-up window.
What this setting does and does not do
- It prevents ordinary websites from automatically opening additional windows or redirecting the current page.
- It does not revoke notification permission that you previously granted to a site.
- It does not remove a malicious Android app that draws over other applications.
- It does not make a deceptive page trustworthy; a page can still display a fake warning inside its own tab.
Revoke notification permission from the noisy website
Website notifications are a common reason ads continue after pop-ups are blocked. They can arrive in the Android notification shade when Chrome is closed, and their text may imitate a system virus alert or an operating-system update.
Disable notifications for one site
- Open the website that is sending the unwanted alerts, if you can identify it from the notification’s title or icon.
- Tap the icon at the left of Chrome’s address bar. This opens Page info.
- Tap Permissions.
- Find Notifications and set it to off or Block.
- Reload the page or close its tab. Future notifications from that origin should stop.
Turning off browser pop-ups does not automatically change this permission. Treat the two controls as separate: one controls browser windows and redirects; the other controls messages delivered through Android notifications.

Review notification controls globally
- In Chrome, tap More (three dots).
- Open Settings, then Site settings.
- Tap Notifications.
- Review the allowed or blocked sites and remove permissions for domains you do not recognize.
Chrome can automatically block notifications from sites it identifies as intrusive or misleading. Depending on the notification, Chrome may offer a spam-reporting or unsubscribe action. Use that control instead of opening the linked advertisement.

Keep Safe Browsing enabled
Safe Browsing adds a protection layer before a page can trick you into downloading software or entering information. Google describes it as warning about malware, phishing, social engineering, malicious ads, and intrusive ads.
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Privacy and security.
- Tap Safe Browsing.
- Choose Standard protection or Enhanced protection.
Choosing between Standard and Enhanced protection
| Mode | When it fits | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Standard protection | A sensible baseline for most people who want warnings for known dangerous sites and downloads. | It provides the normal Safe Browsing checks without opting into the additional checks associated with Enhanced protection. |
| Enhanced protection | Useful when you want the strongest available warning layer for suspicious pages, downloads, and extensions. | It may send more browsing-related information to Google for additional protection; review Chrome’s on-screen privacy explanation before selecting it. |
If Chrome shows a red Dangerous site warning, Google’s guidance is not to visit the site. Do not bypass the warning merely because a popup says that continuing is necessary to remove a virus.
Handle fake virus, update, and prize popups safely
A web page cannot reliably diagnose your Android phone merely by displaying a banner. Messages such as “Your device is infected,” “You must update Chrome,” “You won a prize,” or “Call support immediately” are designed to create urgency.
Recommended Free Tools
- Do not tap the warning, the phone number, the download button, or an “allow notifications” prompt.
- Do not install an APK offered by the page.
- Close the tab with Chrome’s tab switcher. If the page traps the back button, close the entire tab or force-close Chrome through Android’s recent-apps screen.
- For an update, open the official app store or the software maker’s official website yourself.
- If Chrome displays the red Dangerous site page, leave the site rather than choosing an option to proceed.
Legitimate Android security notices come from the operating system or a trusted security application, not from an arbitrary website demanding that you press a button in its page.
When ads appear on every site or over other apps
Persistent, device-wide advertising is an escalation signal. If unrelated websites show the same behavior, or ads appear when Chrome is not open, an unwanted app may be responsible. Changing Chrome’s pop-up setting alone will not remove that app.

Restart Android in Safe mode
Safe mode starts Android with downloaded apps temporarily disabled. The exact key combination differs by manufacturer, so use the method shown in your phone’s support documentation. A common procedure is:
- Press and hold the power button until the power menu appears.
- Touch and hold Power off until Android offers a Safe mode restart.
- Confirm the restart. A Safe mode label normally appears on the screen.
- Use the phone for a few minutes and check whether the ads stop.
If the ads disappear in Safe mode, a downloaded app is a strong suspect. If they continue, revisit Chrome site permissions and Android notification settings; the cause may be a browser permission or a system-level issue rather than a recently installed app.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Remove recently downloaded apps methodically
- While still in Safe mode, open Android Settings and view the installed-app list.
- Sort mentally by installation date and identify apps added shortly before the ads began. Pay special attention to apps installed from outside the official app store or with names you do not recognize.
- Uninstall one suspect app.
- Restart the phone normally.
- Use the phone long enough to determine whether the advertising returns. If it does, repeat the process with the next recent suspect.
Removing apps one at a time makes it possible to identify the cause and avoids deleting unrelated software unnecessarily. Do not reinstall an app simply because its icon looks familiar; check its publisher and installation source first.
Verify Google Play Protect
- Open the official app store on Android.
- Open your account or profile menu and enter Play Protect.
- Tap the Play Protect settings control.
- Ensure Scan apps with Play Protect is enabled.
- Run a scan if the option is available and follow the removal or disable instructions for anything identified as harmful.
Keep Play Protect enabled after the immediate problem is resolved. It is an additional check, not a replacement for cautious downloads and notification-permission review.

Even when covered, the WiFi router functions normally. The EMF-proof WiFi router cover preserves the range of WiFi signals we typically use.
- 【Protecting From Now】The proximity of harmful sources to our bodies directly affects the amount of radiation we are exposed to. Additionally, the longer the exposure time, the greater the potential harm. As we rest or engage in entertainment activities at home, the router's radiation is constantly present. However, with this cover, we can significantly improve our health and well-being.
- 【Promoting a Greener Living Environment】While the harmful effects of WiFi routers may not be extremely high, they still emit microwave radiation. Numerous studies have linked this radiation to various illnesses and neurological problems. Often, we believe we are keeping our children safe without realizing the dangers of exposing them to electromagnetic toxins. This WiFi router cover offers protection against such risks.
Use the symptom to choose the next troubleshooting step
| Symptom after the first fix | Next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| New windows stop, but alerts remain in the notification shade | Revoke the site’s notification permission through Page info > Permissions | Pop-up blocking and notification permissions are independent. |
| Only one unfamiliar domain causes redirects | Close its tabs, clear its permission, and avoid returning to the page | The problem is scoped to that site or its content rather than all Chrome browsing. |
| Several sites redirect or show identical fake warnings | Confirm Safe Browsing is enabled, then investigate recent apps in Safe mode | A broad pattern can indicate malicious content or an unwanted app. |
| Ads appear while Chrome is closed | Check Android notifications and use Safe mode to test downloaded apps | Chrome cannot be the only source when it is not running. |
| A red Dangerous site warning appears | Leave the page and do not bypass the warning | The warning indicates a potentially unsafe destination. |
| Ads return after removing one app | Repeat the one-app-at-a-time removal process and run Play Protect | More than one unwanted app, or a different recent installation, may be involved. |
Clean up after blocking the ads
Once the alerts stop, remove the conditions that allowed them in the first place.
- Review Chrome’s global notification list and remove every site you do not recognize.
- Leave Pop-ups and redirects disabled unless you have a specific, trusted site that genuinely requires a popup.
- Keep Safe Browsing on Standard or Enhanced protection.
- Keep Play Protect’s app scanning enabled.
- Install apps only from a source you trust, and read the requested permissions before accepting them.
- When a site asks to send notifications, decline unless you have a clear reason to receive messages from that site.
- Close suspicious tabs instead of interacting with their buttons, chat widgets, or telephone links.
Common mistakes that make popup problems persist
Only disabling pop-ups
This blocks browser windows but leaves previously granted notification permission untouched. If the symptom is an Android notification, remove the permission as well.
Clicking “Allow” to dismiss a warning
Many deceptive pages make the allow button appear to be a close or verification control. Granting notification access can create a continuing stream of alerts. Use the browser’s tab controls instead.
Installing a “cleaner” from the popup
The download may be the unwanted software causing the problem. Use Android’s built-in Safe mode workflow and Play Protect rather than an unknown APK advertised by a page.

Bypassing a Dangerous site warning
A warning is a reason to leave, not a challenge to complete. If you need the information, look for the organization’s legitimate site by entering its address yourself or using a trusted bookmark.
Deleting every app at once
Mass removal can destroy useful data and still fail to identify the cause. Remove recent suspects one by one, restart normally after each removal, and observe the result.

When to seek additional help
Escalate the issue if ads continue after notification permissions are removed, recent apps are checked in Safe mode, and Play Protect reports no resolution. Record which screens appear, whether Chrome is open, the domains shown in notifications, and the names of recently installed apps. Do not call a phone number displayed in a popup or give a stranger remote access to the device. A manufacturer’s official support channel or a trusted technician can use those details to investigate without relying on the deceptive message.
