The safest sharing method depends on what the recipient needs. Choose WhatsApp’s HD option for a convenient in-chat preview, send the photo as a document when the untouched file matters, use a Google Photos link for albums and mixed devices, or use AirDrop with All Photos Data for original data between nearby Apple devices. “Quality” includes more than pixel dimensions: compression, file format, metadata, edit history and Live Photo motion can all change independently.
Choose the sharing route before you tap Send

How to send an original through WhatsApp
Use HD for a convenient chat image
- Open the chat and attach an existing photo or video.
- Choose the HD quality option before sending.
- Confirm the HD indicator, then send.
WhatsApp’s current product page says, “Send any video or photo with full HD quality on WhatsApp.” That is an official product description, not an independent test of every pixel, metadata field or file property. HD is therefore the practical choice when the recipient mainly needs to view the picture in the conversation.
Use the document route for the file itself
- Open the chat and choose the attachment option for a document or file rather than the photo gallery.
- Select the photo or video from your device’s files.
- Send it and tell the recipient to download the attachment before editing or printing.
WhatsApp says, “Send files as big as 2GB to your chats for free without compressing.” The recipient may not see a normal inline photo, but this route is the better choice when the original file is more important than a quick preview. The 2 GB limit is a documented product maximum and can change with app versions.

Check backup quality first
Google Photos’ Original quality setting stores photos and videos at the resolution captured, with no quality change, and counts them against your Google Account storage. Storage saver can compress supported photos and resize photos above 16 megapixels to 16 megapixels; videos above 1080p can be resized to 1080p. In regions where Express is available, photos above 3 megapixels may be resized to 3 megapixels and videos above 480p may be resized to 480p.

Those are backup settings, not universal rules for every sharing app. In Google Photos, open the item’s details or backup information and verify that the copy you intend to share is the original-quality version when fidelity is essential.
Create a link or shared album
- Open Google Photos and select one or more pictures.
- Tap Share, then choose Create link or create a shared album.
- Send the link through your preferred messaging app.
- Review the album’s sharing controls afterward. Google’s guidance says anyone with the link can view a shared album, including people who do not have a Google Account.
For sensitive photos, use the sharing controls to remove people or reset the link when the audience should no longer have access. A link is convenient for mixed-device groups, but it is not the same as sending a private file directly to one person.

Send original Apple photo data with AirDrop
- In the Photos app, select the picture or pictures and tap Share.
- Tap Options and choose Current if you want to prevent file-format conversion.
- Turn on All Photos Data. Apple documents this control for AirDrop; it sends the original file with edit history and metadata.
- Choose the nearby recipient in AirDrop and accept the transfer on the other device.
Choosing Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV, which can improve compatibility but changes the format. Apple also cautions that a device or service without Live Photo support receives only a still image. AirDrop is consequently the clearest Apple-to-Apple option when edit history, metadata and Live Photo data matter.

Why a photo can look worse even when resolution seems unchanged
- Compression: a service can discard image information to reduce file size.
- Resizing: fewer pixels limit later cropping, printing and editing.
- Format conversion: JPEG, HEIC, PNG, MOV and other formats carry different capabilities and compatibility.
- Metadata removal: capture date, location, camera details and other fields may be stripped.
- Edit-history loss: a rendered copy may not retain the original adjustment data.
- Motion loss: a Live Photo can arrive as a still image on unsupported devices or services.
Verify the result before deleting your original
- Open the received item on the destination device.
- Check pixel dimensions, file extension and file size in its information panel.
- For important work, compare metadata and confirm that a Live Photo still includes motion.
- Keep the original in your camera roll or backup until the recipient confirms a successful download.
Product features and limits can change by app version, operating system and region. If the received dimensions or format are different from the source, resend using the document/file route, Original quality backup, or AirDrop with All Photos Data rather than relying on a higher-looking preview label.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does WhatsApp HD send the original photo?
No. WhatsApp describes HD as full-HD media and separately describes document sending for large files without compression. Use the document/file route when the untouched file, metadata or exact format matters.
Can anyone see a Google Photos shared album?
Anyone who has the album link can view it. Review sharing controls and reset or remove the link when access should end.

What does AirDrop’s All Photos Data include?
Apple says it sends the original file together with edit history and metadata through AirDrop. A destination without Live Photo support may still receive only a still image.
