If Instagram messages are appearing in Messenger, first check whether you are seeing an actual conversation, a phone notification, or messages in a business inbox. Those are different problems, and turning off a notification does not necessarily stop a conversation from being available in an app. Meta’s older cross-app messaging instructions are marked outdated, so there is no verified, universal iPhone or Android switch to recommend for stopping Instagram DMs from appearing in Messenger.
Identify where the Instagram message is appearing
Check the screen where you see the message before changing account settings. The right place to troubleshoot depends on whether Messenger contains a conversation, your phone displays an alert, or a business inbox shows customer messages.

Check current message controls for a cross-app conversation
Start with Instagram’s profile menu and use Settings search, if available, for terms such as “messages,” “message controls,” or “cross-app.” Also inspect Messenger’s current privacy settings. Treat these as places to investigate, not guaranteed menu paths: labels and availability can vary, and an exact current route for iPhone and Android is not confirmed.
Meta’s September 2020 announcement described controls for deciding whether certain messages and calls went to chats, message requests, or were not received. It also said Instagram-to-Instagram messages and calls stayed in Instagram, while Messenger users could reach Instagram users through the cross-app experience. If only a notification is appearing
- Open Instagram’s notification settings and review message notifications.
- Open Messenger’s notification settings separately and review what that app is allowed to alert you about.
- On your iPhone or Android phone, open the operating system’s notification settings for each app and adjust alerts or previews as desired.
- Send or receive a test message, then check whether the conversation is still accessible in either app. Notification changes control alerts; they do not necessarily change where a conversation can be opened.
Exact phone-setting names differ by operating-system version, so use your device’s Settings search for “notifications” and the relevant app name rather than relying on a single path.

If messages appear in a business inbox
For Instagram customer messages shown alongside Facebook Page messages, inspect which Instagram account and Page are connected and who or what is assigned access to the inbox. A business inbox is not the same symptom as a personal push notification or a cross-app conversation. The current official steps for changing that setup are not established here, so consult the in-app Help Center for your account type and region before disconnecting or reassigning anything.
What not to change blindly
- Do not unlink Accounts Center as a first fix. Meta documents connected experiences such as cross-posting and single sign-on, but that does not establish that unlinking accounts stops DMs from appearing in Messenger. Meta’s Accounts Center overview
- Do not turn off cross-posting expecting message routing to change. Cross-posting is a separate connected experience.
- Do not treat notification muting as message blocking. A conversation may remain available even when alerts are off.
If a relevant control is missing, update Instagram and Messenger, then check the current in-app Help Center. Meta says Accounts Center can be reached from the settings of Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, and adding multiple accounts to one Accounts Center is optional; neither fact confirms a DM-routing control.
