If your headphone ear pads are already flaking, replacing them with a compatible pair is the practical fix. The coating’s peeling is a wear sign, not something the manufacturer guidance here says can be reversed with glue, polish, or conditioner. First identify whether the damaged part is an ear pad or the headband cushion, then check the exact model’s parts and support instructions before buying or removing anything.
Find the part that is peeling
Check whether flakes are coming from the ear cushions, the headband cushion, or another part. Ear pads usually attach to the earcups; headband padding may require a different repair or service route. A headband cover is not a fix for peeling ear pads.
Use the exact brand and model name when looking up parts. If the maker does not list the headband cushion as user-replaceable, ask its service team about repair rather than assuming an ear-pad replacement method will work.

Look up the warranty terms for your country and product, and contact the maker before disassembling the headset if you think the damage may be covered. Include the model, proof or date of purchase, and clear photos; ask whether the issue qualifies before removing parts. Warranty coverage is manufacturer- and region-specific, not a general promise for peeling.

Confirm the precise model and revision, attachment design, left/right orientation if relevant, and what the replacement kit includes. It may contain inner scrims, foam discs, or a retaining ring that needs to be reused or replaced. A part that looks similar can still have different dimensions or mounting tabs. For example, Valco says its VMK20 pads do not fit the VMK25, while VMK25 and VMK25.2 pads are interchangeable; that compatibility guidance applies only to those models. Replace the pads using the instructions for your model
There is no universal removal method. Sony notes that the process varies by model, and the attachment may use tabs, hooks, a retaining ring, or a twist-lock design. Consult the maker’s instructions for the exact headphones and stop if a part resists; forcing it can break the mount or disturb material inside the cup.

- Find the official instructions. Search the manufacturer support site using the full model number. Check whether the instructions call for a particular tool or caution against one.
- Remove the old pad as directed. Work around the attachment gently. JBL’s guidance, for example, distinguishes between on-ear and over-ear products and cautions against breaking plastic hooks when removing some over-ear cushions. JBL’s ear-pad replacement guidance
- Transfer or replace inner pieces as instructed. Some kits include protective scrims or other inner material. Bose’s consumer guide says to replace the scrims first where the applicable kit requires it, align the mounting flange, and press the tabs into place; it says all 10 tabs per cup must lock for optimal performance, particularly on noise-cancelling headphones. - Align and secure the new cushion. Match its orientation and attachment points to the official directions. Sennheiser’s Momentum 3 manual, for instance, instructs users to align the pads with the retaining-ring notches, position the seam downward, and press around the ring until it snaps into place. - Check the fit before wearing them. Make sure the cushion sits evenly and the attachment is fully engaged. On noise-cancelling models, misplaced inner cushioning can affect noise cancelling or cause echo, according to Sony. Sony’s model-specific earpad replacement guidance
Other designs differ: Valco says its compatible VMK pads twist off and back on. Do not use that method on headphones with another attachment style. Valco’s VMK replacement instructions
Clean and store cushions to limit avoidable wear
Follow the cleaning instructions for the exact model and cushion material. Manufacturer directions differ: beyerdynamic advises cleaning its earpads with a soft damp cloth and water only, without detergents. Sennheiser’s Momentum 3 manual recommends a clean, soft cloth dampened with water for leather parts and cautions against leather polish, detergents, harsh soaps, and damp or humid storage. Audeara advises against harsh cleaners, alcohol, or soaking, and says to keep cushions away from direct sunlight and heat sources.

Moisture, skin oils, heat, storage, and use are among the factors manufacturers identify as relevant to cushion wear. If your model’s instructions permit it, wipe the headphones after use and let damp pads air-dry completely before reassembly or storage. Bose specifically recommends regular wiping, especially after workouts, and complete air drying. Do not interpret air-drying advice as permission to soak the cushions or use alcohol.

Do not assume there is one replacement interval
Pad life depends on the product and its use; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a lifespan for all headphones. Valco estimates its pads typically last about 1–3 years, with use, skin oils, moisture, and storage affecting that estimate. That is Valco’s guidance, not an industry-wide interval. A different, product-specific example is Bose’s A20 aviation headset owner’s guide, which gives a general rule of replacing cushions every six months or every 350 hours of use, depending on how often the owner flies. It lists flaking of the outer covering, cuts or tears, and flattening that reduces seal effectiveness as signs the cushions need replacement. Look for replacement ear pads made for your exact model and revision. Before ordering, compare the mounting design, included inner pieces, material, seller or part authenticity, and return terms. Fabric and faux-leather options can feel different, but the sources here do not support a claim that one material universally lasts longer.

If the headband cushion is peeling instead, check whether the manufacturer sells that specific part or offers service. A compatible headband cover may help cover worn headband material, but it does not repair ear pads and should not be treated as a substitute for a serviceable replacement part.
