To reduce buffering on a Fire TV Stick, first check its network status, then work through simple connection and restart steps before considering new equipment or a factory reset. Buffering can come from the Fire TV’s connection, the router, or a wider internet outage, so no single step is guaranteed to fix every case.
Start with Fire TV’s network diagnostics
Use the device’s built-in tools to see whether the problem is between the Fire TV and router or between the router and the internet. Amazon says the Network Status tool checks both parts of the connection and can offer recommendations. On compatible devices, it may also show a speed test and advanced network details.
- On Fire TV, open Settings > Network.
- Press the Play/Pause button to open Network Status. If an error screen appears, choose Network Diagnostics.
- Follow the on-screen recommendations. If available, review the speed test and advanced network details.
See Amazon’s Fire TV Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and its explanation of the Network Status tool.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi
If the connection still seems unstable, turn Wi-Fi off and back on. If that does not help, forget the network and reconnect by selecting it and entering its password.
Restart the modem and router
Unplug both devices for one minute. Reconnect the modem first and wait for it to come online; then reconnect the router and allow it to connect. Restarting the network equipment may resolve a connection problem affecting the Fire TV.

Find out whether the problem is just the Fire TV
Check whether other devices in your home can access the internet. If several devices are offline, a broader network outage or router/modem issue may be involved. Consider wired or upgraded Wi-Fi only when the evidence points there
Test Ethernet if your Fire TV model supports it
A wired connection can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem. Some Fire TV devices need an Ethernet adapter, and compatibility depends on the specific model. Check the model’s requirements before buying or connecting an adapter. Amazon describes Ethernet as an option in its Fire TV Wi-Fi setup troubleshooting.
Address weak whole-home coverage
If diagnostics and device placement point to poor coverage across a larger home, a mesh Wi-Fi system may help extend whole-home coverage. Amazon also suggests a Wi-Fi 6E-or-higher-capable router for compatible Fire TV devices. These are conditional options: compatibility and the actual coverage problem matter, and an upgrade is not a guaranteed buffering fix.

- The Right Angle USB-C Ethernet Adapter is compatible with Fire TV Sticks with USB-C connectivity.
- As the USB-C version, this accessory is incompatible with Fire TV Sticks with micro-USB.
- Supports up to 480mbps when used with Fire TV Sticks.
Keep power and HDMI setup advice in perspective
Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions say to use the supplied power adapter with a wall outlet and to use the HDMI extender when needed to reach the port. Follow those instructions when setting up the device, but Amazon’s cited setup guidance does not present them as general fixes for buffering.
Use a factory reset only as a last resort
If the network checks, restarts, Wi-Fi reconnection, and placement steps have not helped, Amazon lists a factory reset as an escalation step. A reset is more disruptive than the earlier fixes, so do not start there. Follow the on-screen reset process and be prepared to set up the Fire TV again.
