A job-list integration must distinguish three outcomes: the employer’s board does not exist, the board loaded successfully but has no open jobs, or the request failed. Treating all three as an empty array can make a broken connection look like a company that stopped hiring. The fix is to check the HTTP response, validate the payload for the specific ATS, and preserve the result state instead of falling back to [].
How does a broken API request turn into a false “no jobs” result?
A common shortcut is return data.jobs ?? []. It appears to handle a missing field gracefully, but it can erase the difference between a valid empty board and an invalid or unexpected response. It also assumes every provider returns a jobs property.
That assumption breaks for a bare-array response, such as the Lever response shape reported in the article that examined these four integrations. A request can also return a 404 for a wrong board token, a 429 because of rate limiting, a server error, or an unexpected non-JSON body. If the application converts any of those cases to [], its interface may confidently show “no open positions” when it has not successfully retrieved the board at all.

Which result states should the integration preserve?
Keep transport, parsing, and business outcomes separate. At minimum, represent the result using distinct states such as:
board_not_found: the requested board or token could not be found. Use this only when the endpoint and status support that interpretation; a 404 from a malformed URL or unrelated route is not proof that the employer has no board.no_open_jobs: the request succeeded, the response matched the expected schema, and the validated jobs collection contains zero published jobs.request_failed: the request did not succeed, including HTTP errors such as rate limits or server failures. Preserve the status code and response context in logs.parse_or_schema_error: the response was successful at the HTTP layer but could not be parsed or did not have the expected provider-specific shape.jobs_found: the request and schema checks succeeded and the normalized collection contains one or more jobs.
Do not infer a hiring change from a network or parsing failure. Keep the last successfully retrieved data, if the product needs to display cached results, visibly separate from the latest refresh status.

How should a safe parser handle the four ATS response shapes?
First check response.ok and retain the HTTP status. Only then parse JSON and validate the structure for the selected provider. The article reports that Greenhouse, Ashby, and Workable wrap job results in a jobs property, while Lever returns an array; this is an implementation observation, not a guarantee that every endpoint or future response has that shape. Confirm against the provider’s current documentation and actual endpoint response before deploying a parser.

In production, make parseProviderPayload explicit for each ATS, validate the fields the application depends on, and record the requested board token and status without exposing credentials. A 404 can be classified as board_not_found only when it comes from the expected board endpoint; do not let a bad route or unrelated proxy response masquerade as a missing employer board.

What differs across Greenhouse, Lever, Ashby, and Workable?
The safest integration is provider-aware: endpoint family, authentication, response shape, and synchronization behavior are not interchangeable. The documented and reported distinctions below help identify what to verify before writing an adapter.

How do you tell a nonexistent board from a real empty board?
Verify the board token or URL from the employer’s own careers site before interpreting its response. A guessed slug that happens to return HTTP 200 does not establish that the board belongs to the company you intend to represent. The article’s board-ownership warning is especially relevant when an integration discovers boards automatically: a valid-looking response may still belong to another organization.

- Record the ATS board address or token reached through that link; avoid relying on a company-name guess alone.
- Request the board through the intended endpoint and inspect the HTTP status before parsing its body.
- Validate the provider-specific response shape, then count the published jobs returned by the successful response.
- Store the source board identity and refresh outcome so a failed refresh cannot silently replace a previously valid job list with an empty one.
A confirmed board can legitimately have no published jobs. That result should be shown only after a successful response and schema validation; it should not be used as a catch-all for an unknown slug, an API outage, or a change in response format.

What do the example job counts actually tell you?
The article matching this topic reports live requests made on August 28, 2026. These are dated observations by the article’s author, not current totals, independently reproduced measurements, or evidence that one ATS has more jobs overall. The article also notes that counts move daily.

What should you log and display when a refresh fails?
- Record provider, verified board token, endpoint family, HTTP status, refresh time, and parser outcome.
- Track rate limits, server errors, network failures, invalid JSON, and schema mismatches separately from successful zero-job responses.
- On failure, show a refresh problem or the timestamp of the last successful update—not a new “no jobs” result.
- Alert on repeated schema errors. A provider response change should be visible to maintainers rather than silently converted into an empty list.
- Follow each provider’s pagination protocol and exhaust pages when the integration needs a complete list; for Lever, use the returned
nextoffset token rather than inventing an offset.
This makes the product’s statement proportional to the evidence: an empty validated response means no published jobs were returned at that refresh, while a failed or unrecognized response means the current hiring status could not be confirmed.
