If an email is appearing under Other in Outlook, it is usually still in your Inbox—not in Junk Email. Outlook’s Focused Inbox separates incoming Inbox messages into two tabs: Focused and Other.
You can either disable the split so every Inbox message appears in one list, or tell Outlook to keep messages from a particular sender in Focused. The correct menu depends on whether you use new Outlook, classic Outlook, Outlook on the web, Mac, or mobile.
What the Other tab means
Focused Inbox automatically sorts Inbox messages based on signals such as your interaction with senders and whether a message looks automated or bulk-sent. A message in Other has not necessarily been treated as spam; it remains in the Inbox.
Focused Inbox affects only the Inbox. Turning it off does not move messages out of Junk Email, Deleted Items, Archive, or custom folders.

Option 1: Turn off Focused Inbox
This is the most reliable fix if you do not want Outlook separating your Inbox. After you disable it, the Focused and Other tabs disappear and all Inbox messages are shown together.
New Outlook for Windows
- Open new Outlook.
- Select View > View settings.
- Select Mail > Layout.
- Choose the account whose Inbox you want to change.
- Under Focused Inbox, select Don’t sort my messages.
- Select Save.
If you do not see View > View settings, you may be using classic Outlook. Use the classic Outlook steps below instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsClassic Outlook for Windows
- Open classic Outlook.
- Select the View tab.
- Select Show Focused Inbox to turn it off.
The Focused and Other tabs should disappear from the Inbox. New Outlook and classic Outlook have different commands, so do not look for the new Outlook Layout setting in the classic application.
Outlook on the web or Outlook.com
- Open Outlook on the web or Outlook.com.
- Select Settings.
- Go to Mail > Layout.
- Under Focused Inbox, select Don’t sort my messages.
- Select Save.
This changes how the Inbox is displayed. It does not disable spam filtering or change messages already placed in other folders.
Outlook for Mac
The steps differ between the newer and legacy Mac applications.

If Focused Inbox is useful overall, you can train Outlook to place messages from a specific sender in Focused.
New Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, and Outlook.com
- Open the Other tab.
- Right-click the message.
- Select Move > Move to Focused inbox to move only that message.
- For future messages from the sender, select Move > Always move to Focused inbox.
The Always move command is sender-based. Use it only when all or nearly all messages from that sender belong in Focused.
Classic Outlook for Windows
- Open the Other tab.
- Right-click the message.
- Select Move to Focused to move just the selected message.
- Select Always Move to Focused to affect future messages from that sender.
Outlook for Mac
- Open the message in Other.
- Select Message > Move to Focused to move only that message.
- Select Message > Always Move to Focused to change the sender preference.
Outlook mobile
- Open the message in Other.
- Tap the three dots or More options.
- Tap Move to Focused Inbox.
- Choose Always Move for future messages, or Move Once for only the current message.
If you choose Move Once, Outlook does not create a permanent sender preference.

When the email is not in Other
If neither Focused nor Other contains the message, turning off Focused Inbox will not solve the problem. Check these locations and settings:
- Junk Email: Open the Junk Email folder and look for the message.
- Deleted Items: An Inbox rule or another mail client may have deleted it.
- Inbox rules: In Outlook on the web, select Settings > Mail > Rules and inspect rules that move, delete, or redirect messages.
- Other devices and apps: A phone, desktop mail client, or third-party service may be moving messages after delivery.
- Search all folders: Search by sender, subject, or a distinctive phrase rather than looking only at the Inbox.
- Clutter: If you see a Clutter folder instead of Focused and Other, the mailbox may still be using Microsoft’s older Clutter feature.
Focused Inbox is also not available in the same way for every account type. Microsoft lists support in Outlook for Windows for Microsoft 365, Exchange, and Outlook.com accounts; POP and IMAP accounts may not show the Focused Inbox controls.

Force selected organizational messages into Focused
For messages such as payroll or HR notices, an Exchange Online mail-flow rule can add Microsoft’s Focused Inbox bypass header:
New-TransportRule -Name "Payroll to Focused" `
-From "Payroll Department" `
-SetHeaderName "X-MS-Exchange-Organization-BypassFocusedInbox" `
-SetHeaderValue "true"
The exact header is case-sensitive:
X-MS-Exchange-Organization-BypassFocusedInbox: true
This supported method bypasses Focused Inbox classification and places matching messages in Focused. It is not a general command for placing mail in Other. Administrators can verify the rule by inspecting the message headers.
Shared mailboxes and other limitations
Focused Inbox does not work for a shared mailbox in the normal shared-mailbox scenario. This is by design. Outlook for Windows may still display Focused Inbox-related hints for a shared mailbox, which can be confusing.
Adding a shared mailbox as a full account can expose different capabilities, including Focused Inbox support in new Outlook. That is different from simply opening a shared mailbox as an additional mailbox.

FAQ
Is the Other tab the same as Junk Email?
No. Other is a Focused Inbox tab, and messages there are still in your Inbox. Junk Email is a separate folder used for messages Outlook identifies as spam or potentially unsafe.
How do I stop all emails from going to Other in Outlook?
Turn off Focused Inbox. In new Outlook or Outlook on the web, go to Settings or View settings, select Mail > Layout, choose Don’t sort my messages, and save. In classic Outlook for Windows, select View > Show Focused Inbox.
Can I move only one sender from Other to Focused?
Yes. Right-click a message in Other and choose Move > Always move to Focused inbox in new Outlook or the web. Classic Outlook uses Always Move to Focused. On mobile, open the message, choose Move to Focused Inbox, and select Always Move.
Why can’t I find Focused Inbox settings?
You may be using a different Outlook version, a POP or IMAP account, or a shared mailbox. New Outlook, classic Outlook, Mac, web, and mobile use different menu paths. Focused Inbox also has limited support for shared mailboxes.
Does turning off Focused Inbox recover missing emails?
No. It only removes the Focused/Other split from the Inbox. If the email is absent from both tabs, check Junk Email, Deleted Items, Inbox rules, other folders, and other devices or mail applications.
Can an administrator disable Other for everyone?
An Exchange Online administrator can set the organization’s FocusedInboxOn value to false with Set-OrganizationConfig -FocusedInboxOn $false. Users may still be able to re-enable Focused Inbox individually in their Outlook clients.
The Bottom Line
For a single Inbox with no Other tab, turn off Focused Inbox and choose Don’t sort my messages. If you only need to correct one sender, use Always move to Focused. If the message is not in either Inbox tab, investigate Junk Email, Deleted Items, rules, and other connected mail apps instead.
