On Android, turn off the dedicated Wi-Fi scanning setting: Android 12 and later use Settings > Location > Location Services > Wi-Fi scanning; Android 11 and earlier use Settings > Location > Wi-Fi scanning. This stops the named feature, which scans for nearby access points to help apps estimate location. Windows has location privacy controls, but no equivalent universal switch that guarantees every app and radio function has stopped scanning.
Turn off Wi-Fi scanning on Android
- Android 12 and later: Open Settings > Location > Location Services > Wi-Fi scanning, then switch Wi-Fi scanning off.
- Android 11 and earlier: Open Settings > Location > Wi-Fi scanning, then switch it off.
Google describes this setting as allowing the device to scan for nearby Wi-Fi access points so apps can get better location information. Menu names and paths can vary by device maker. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for “Wi-Fi scanning”; that is a navigation tip, not a guarantee that every manufacturer uses the same label. Choose the right scope: scanning, accuracy, or location
These Android controls are not interchangeable. Start with the dedicated Wi-Fi scanning switch if you want to disable that feature without broadly changing location behavior.

Google documents Android location settings and Location Accuracy separately. Disabling all device location is not necessary just to switch off Wi-Fi scanning.

Why scanning may continue—and what it means for battery life
Android apps can request Wi-Fi scans through the WifiManager.startScan() API. Requests are subject to permissions and throttling; Android can disable scanning while idle or reject requests made too frequently. On Android 10 and later, the documented limits allow all background apps combined one scan in a 30-minute period, while foreground apps can make four requests in two minutes. These are limits on app requests, not a guarantee that the device radio never scans for system functions. See the Android Wi-Fi scanning overview.
Google’s Android vitals documentation identifies more than four background scans per hour as excessive for a background app. Google notes that background scans wake the CPU and excessive scanning can noticeably shorten battery life. This is an Android vitals threshold, not a general hardware or legal limit. Developers can investigate scan activity using Battery Historian; ordinary users should not assume their device provides a universal per-app scan log. Windows: limit location access, not every scan
In Windows 11, open Settings > Privacy & security > Location to turn location services off or manage location access for apps. Windows location can use nearby wireless access points, and access to Wi-Fi APIs that expose nearby networks or BSSIDs is gated by location consent. These controls limit access to location information; they are not a dedicated, universal stop-scanning switch. Microsoft cautions that some third-party applications may use radio-based technologies even when device location is off.

If battery drain or scanning concerns remain
- Confirm the operating system and version before changing settings; Android paths differ by version, and device-maker menus can vary.
- On Android, disable Wi-Fi scanning using the version-appropriate Settings path above.
- If battery drain continues, review battery usage and recently installed apps, then check whether location-dependent app features are needed. Do not assume a particular app is responsible without evidence from your device.
- Consider Location Accuracy or device Location only if you accept the broader effect on location-dependent services.
- On Windows 11, review Location and individual app permissions. Treat these as location privacy controls, not proof that every app or radio function has stopped scanning.
If you use a platform other than Android or Windows, check its OS-specific guidance before applying these steps; the controls and their scope are not universal.
