A condenser mic can sound distorted because the capsule is overloaded by a loud source, the audio interface or mixer input is clipping, or a connection or setup problem is interfering with the signal. The key is to find where distortion begins: lowering interface gain helps only if the overload is happening at or after that input.

Find out whether the interface is clipping

Reproduce the distortion while watching the interface or mixer’s input meter. Turn down the input gain and temporarily disable processing that might raise the signal, such as a boost or effect in your recording software.

  • If the meter clips and reducing gain clears the distortion: the overload was likely at the interface or later in the signal chain.
  • If the sound stays distorted at low interface gain: particularly during shouting, drums, or a loud amplifier, the mic capsule may already be overloaded before the signal reaches the interface.

Meter colors and thresholds differ by device. In its 2i2 guide, Focusrite identifies green as signal at or above -24 dBFS, amber at -6 dBFS (close to clipping), and red at 0 dBFS (digital clipping). Those readings apply to the cited Focusrite guide, not to every interface. Focusrite’s 2i2 metering guidance

When the capsule is overloaded by a loud source

A microphone has a model-specific maximum sound pressure level (SPL). If the sound at the capsule exceeds what it can handle cleanly, the mic itself can distort. Turning down the interface gain afterward cannot undo distortion that has already happened inside the microphone. RØDE Support makes this point in its 5 May 2026 guidance on reducing recording distortion: distortion at the lowest sensitivity or gain may mean the source is exceeding the mic’s maximum SPL.

For a mic that distorts close to a loud source, Shure advises checking mixer-input overload first. If the input is not overloaded, use the microphone’s attenuator if it has one, move the microphone farther away, or use a microphone rated to handle a higher level. Shure also says excess sound level will not damage the microphone; that guidance concerns sound level and should not be taken as a guarantee against electrical faults or mishandling. Shure’s microphone techniques guidance

Try these changes in order

  1. Move the microphone farther from the source, or reduce the source’s volume.
  2. If the mic has a pad or attenuation switch, follow its manual to enable it.
  3. If the distortion continues, check the mic’s documented maximum SPL and consider whether it is suitable for that source and placement.

When the interface or mixer input is overloaded

If reducing input gain makes the recording clean, the preamp or a later stage may have been receiving too much level. Keep the input below its clipping point while preserving enough signal for a clean recording. If the input meter continues to show clipping, reduce gain further and check for processing that adds level.

Audio-Technica AT2020 Cardioid Condenser Studio XLR Microphone, Ideal for Project/Home Studio Applications, Black
  • The price/performance standard in side address studio condenser microphone technology
  • Ideal for project/home studio applications
  • High SPL handling and wide dynamic range provide unmatched versatility
  • Custom engineered low mass diaphragm provides extended frequency response and superior transient response
  • Cardioid polar pattern reduces pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of desired sound source.

A pad can help when it attenuates the signal before an overloaded preamp. But a pad farther down the chain cannot repair distortion that began inside the capsule. The right fix depends on which stage is overloaded, and there is no universal pad attenuation value established for all microphones or setups.

Check the connection, input, and phantom-power setup

Follow the manuals for both the microphone and interface. Use the microphone input and XLR connection as specified. In its 2i2 guide, Focusrite warns that routing a line-level source through an XLR mic input can overload the preamp. Also check whether your specific condenser mic requires phantom power; requirements vary by model.

  2. Enable phantom power only if the microphone’s documentation calls for it.
  3. Turn phantom power off before unplugging the microphone, following Focusrite’s connection procedure.

Focusrite’s phantom-power connection instructions provide this sequence. Consult your own equipment manuals for model-specific directions.

Isolate an intermittent or suspected cable fault

If distortion comes and goes or changes when the cable moves, test with a known-good XLR cable. If the problem remains, try another interface or mixer input, or another interface if one is available. These swaps can help identify a faulty component, but they are diagnostic steps—not a universal cure for overload and not proof that the microphone is defective on their own. When to compare microphone or interface specifications

There is no single maximum SPL threshold for condenser microphones. Compare the specifications for the exact models you are considering, using their manuals rather than a generic figure. Relevant details include the microphone’s maximum SPL and the conditions under which it is specified, whether it has a built-in pad and its stated attenuation, and the interface’s input headroom and metering.

For an existing setup, start with the meter and placement checks before buying anything. A replacement cable is worth considering only when testing points to a cable fault; an attenuator is a conditional option only when the overload is downstream of the capsule.
