If people on a call hear their own voices after you speak, audio is probably playing through a speaker and being picked up by a microphone—possibly on your device or someone else’s. Find the device returning the sound, remove duplicate audio connections, then reduce speaker pickup. If your own voice merely sounds hollow in a room, that is more likely reverberation than a call echo.

First identify what kind of echo you hear

What you notice What it may indicate Start by checking
Other callers hear their own voices repeated after you speak. Call audio is being played by a speaker and captured by a microphone, or more than one audio path is active. Echo cancellation or a microphone problem may also contribute. Which participant or device is returning the audio; duplicate computer and phone connections; speaker volume and microphone selection.
Your voice sounds hollow, distant, or as if you are speaking in a cavern. Sound reflections in the room may be making the voice reverberant. The room and microphone placement, and whether the sound is also being sent back to other callers.

The two problems can occur together, but they are not the same. Echo cancellation is intended to reduce returned speaker audio; it does not necessarily make a reverberant room sound acoustically dry. Microsoft’s explanation of Teams audio processing distinguishes echo from room reverberation, while Zoom’s room guidance notes that a reverberant room can remain reverberant even when processing is used.

Find which participant or device is causing the call echo

The device sending the echo may belong to someone else on the call. Zoom identifies several possible setups: one person has both computer and telephone audio connected; two nearby participants both have speakers active; or multiple computers in one conference room have audio connected. Loud speakers, a microphone problem, or echo cancellation that is not working as intended can also be factors.

  1. In a group call, mute participants one at a time and see whether the echo stops. If you cannot identify the source, mute everyone and unmute them one at a time.
  2. When muting someone stops the echo, ask that person to check their device and audio connections. The source is likely in that setup, although muting alone does not establish the exact cause.
  3. Disconnect extra audio connections and devices, then check whether the echo is gone.

Muting a microphone may not be enough if its speaker remains on and is playing call audio. Zoom specifically cautions that microphone mute does not turn off the speaker.

Remove duplicate audio paths and reduce speaker pickup

Disconnect extra connections

  • If a participant joined by both computer and telephone, disconnect audio from one of them.
  • If several computers in the same room are connected to call audio, disconnect audio on the extra computers.
  • If two nearby people are in the same call, keep call audio active on only one nearby device.

Lower the chance that a microphone captures a speaker

  • Turn down speaker volume.
  • Try headphones or a headset with a microphone if the speaker is still being picked up. Google Meet recommends headphones as an echo-reduction measure and a headset with microphone for poor audio; neither is a guaranteed fix for every setup.
  • Mute your microphone when you are not speaking, while remembering that microphone mute alone may leave the speaker playing.

Check the call app’s microphone and speaker selection

Confirm that the app is using the microphone and output device you intend. For example, a headset may be connected for listening while the computer’s built-in microphone remains selected. Google Meet includes device selection among its audio troubleshooting checks. Correcting the selected devices can prevent the wrong microphone from picking up nearby speaker audio.

Review processing settings only after basic checks

Zoom says its desktop app includes software echo cancellation for echo created by a microphone or room acoustics. It also offers advanced audio settings, including Windows processing options. These controls are intended for users who understand their device setup; changing them without a specific reason can make audio worse or affect other applications.

Zoom also says noise suppression and echo cancellation are on by default. Its musician and live-performance audio profiles can preserve more microphone audio without those filters, so they are not a sensible first adjustment for ordinary call echo. If you use one of those profiles, return to the standard processing setup before experimenting with advanced controls.

Windows: check the output device and audio enhancements

If the issue appears to be local to a Windows computer, first confirm that Windows and the calling app are using the intended output device. Microsoft’s Windows audio guidance also says that disabling audio enhancements may resolve some audio problems. On Windows 11, Microsoft points users to the Get Help audio troubleshooter. These are general audio checks, not proof that Windows is the source of an echo in a group call.

For a reverberant room or a room conferencing system

If your voice sounds cavernous even when no one hears their own voice returned, consider room reflections and microphone placement rather than treating the sound as a call feedback loop. Noise reduction does not necessarily remove room reverberation.

For Zoom Rooms specifically, Zoom documents speaker, microphone, and audio echo tests. Persistent room-system problems may require checking microphone placement or firmware as part of installation-level troubleshooting. These checks apply to Zoom Rooms equipment, not every home computer or meeting app.

When the echo continues

  • Repeat the participant-by-participant mute test after disconnecting duplicate audio paths.
  • Recheck that the intended microphone and speaker are selected in the app and, on Windows, that the intended output is selected in system settings.
  • Test with lower speaker volume or headphones to see whether speaker pickup is involved.
  • Use an app’s advanced processing controls only when you know which setting you are changing and why. For Zoom, consult its current support guidance for version-specific instructions rather than relying on old version requirements.
  • If the sound is room reverberation rather than returned call audio, focus on room and microphone setup; call echo cancellation may not eliminate it.
