To stop websites from starting videos or audio automatically in Microsoft Edge on Windows 11, open Settings and more (the three-dot button) > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Media autoplay. Set the control to Block when that choice is available. If your installation offers only Allow and Limit, choose Limit; it reduces autoplay but can still permit playback when Edge recognizes previous activity on a site.
Disable autoplay from Edge settings
The setting is controlled inside Edge rather than in a general Windows 11 sound or notification panel. It applies to audio and video that a website starts without a click.
- Open Microsoft Edge on your Windows 11 computer.
- Select Settings and more, the three-dot button in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- In the left navigation, select Cookies and site permissions.
- Under site permissions, open Media autoplay.
- Open the autoplay drop-down menu and choose Block if it appears.
- Close the Settings tab, then reload any website that was already open. A page that had already started media may need a reload before the new permission is applied.
That is the strictest built-in setting exposed by Edge. It is a browser permission, so it governs websites in Edge without changing how another browser or a standalone application behaves.

Use the address-bar method when a settings redesign makes the menu path difficult to find, or save the address as a bookmark for future troubleshooting. The internal address works only in Microsoft Edge; entering it in another browser will not open Edge’s settings.
What Allow, Limit and Block actually do
The menu can expose three choices. Their names describe the amount of autoplay Edge permits, but the exact list can vary with browser version and device policy.
| Option | Effect | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Allow | Permits websites to start audio and video automatically. | Choose this only if you intentionally want unrestricted autoplay. |
| Limit | Reduces autoplay and lets Edge make decisions using prior behavior on a site, such as previous visits or interactions. | Use it when Block is unavailable or when you want a less restrictive experience. |
| Block | Intended to stop websites from automatically starting media across sites. | Use it for the strictest built-in control over unwanted video and sound. |
Microsoft identifies Limit as Edge’s default media-autoplay setting. Because Edge can learn from your activity, Limit is not the same as “never play until I click.” A site that you have visited or used before may still start media. Select Block whenever it is available if your goal is to prevent automatic playback as consistently as Edge’s built-in permission allows.

Why a video may still play after you choose Limit
Limit is a reduction policy, not an absolute prohibition. Edge considers its history with a site, including whether you previously visited or interacted with its media. That can produce different results on two websites, or even on the same website after your behavior changes.
- A site you have used frequently may be treated differently from a site you have never opened.
- Interacting with a player can influence how Edge treats later visits when Limit is selected.
- Changing the setting does not necessarily stop a player that is already running until the page is reloaded.
- Some services have their own playback controls that are separate from Edge’s site permission.
If your requirement is “no website starts audio or video without a click,” verify that Block is selected rather than assuming that the default Limit option provides a complete ban.
Confirm that the change worked
Use a simple check instead of relying on a page that was already open.
- After selecting Block, close or reload the tab containing the video.
- Open a page with an embedded video or audio player.
- Wait without clicking the player.
- Confirm that playback does not begin on its own.
- Click the player manually to verify that intentional playback still works when the site and player allow it.
This check tests website media autoplay. It does not test a service’s “play next video” feature, which begins another item after you have already started or finished one, and it does not test pop-up blocking.

What this setting does—and does not—control
It controls website audio and video autoplay
Media autoplay covers audio and video that begins automatically on a website. Edge manages it as a site permission under Cookies and site permissions. The permission is designed for web content loaded in Edge, including embedded players on ordinary pages.
It does not change a service’s next-video preference
Many video services have a separate “play next” or continuous-play setting. That feature decides whether another video starts after the current item; it is not the same as allowing a page to autoplay its first item. If a service continues to advance through a playlist, adjust that service’s own playback control as well as Edge’s Media autoplay permission.
It does not replace pop-up blocking
Pop-ups are a separate Edge permission. A page can be prevented from opening a new window while still having media behavior governed by the Media autoplay setting, or the reverse. If unwanted tabs or windows appear, review Edge’s pop-up controls independently; changing Media autoplay alone will not address them.

When Block is missing
Some Edge installations show only Allow and Limit. Microsoft’s consumer instructions describe Block, but they do not guarantee that every managed installation exposes the same choices. If Block is absent:
- Select Limit as the strongest option visible.
- Reload the affected websites and test them without interacting with their players.
- Check whether the computer is managed by an employer or school.
- Verify the installed Edge version and whether an administrator controls browser permissions.
Do not treat a missing Block option as evidence that you followed the wrong menu path. The available choices can depend on the Edge version and policies applied to the device.
Managed Windows 11 computers and policy restrictions
On a work or school computer, an administrator can manage autoplay through Edge policy. Microsoft documents this control as the AutoplayAllowed policy. When the policy is unconfigured, Edge uses its current media-autoplay setting and allows the user to change it. A configured policy can remove or override the user-level choice.

Microsoft’s policy documentation also describes version-specific behavior when the policy is disabled in Edge version 148 and later. Consequently, the same setting can behave differently after an organization updates Edge, even if the user has not changed the Media autoplay menu.

Signs that policy is involved include a missing Block option, a setting that returns to its previous value, or a control that is visibly unavailable. On a managed device, contact the organization’s administrator and ask whether an autoplay policy is applied. An administrator may need to change the policy; repeatedly changing the local drop-down will not override an enforced setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Version and update checks when the setting behaves unexpectedly
Edge’s labels and available choices can change between versions. If the menu does not match the steps above, first note the Edge version installed on the computer and compare the labels shown on the Media autoplay page. Install updates only through your organization’s approved process on a managed device.
- If the page offers Block, select it and reload the affected tab.
- If it offers only Allow and Limit, use Limit and investigate policy or version differences.
- If the selection changes after restarting Edge, check for an administrator policy rather than repeatedly reapplying the setting.
- If one site still starts media, determine whether the behavior is a site’s next-video feature instead of first-load autoplay.
Re-enable autoplay later
To restore automatic playback, return to Settings and more > Settings > Cookies and site permissions > Media autoplay, or open edge://settings/content/mediaAutoplay directly. Choose Allow if it is available. Choosing Limit instead restores Edge’s reduced, behavior-based approach rather than unrestricted autoplay.

Practical decision guide
Choose Block when interruption is the problem
Select Block if surprise sound, animated news clips, or background video is the reason you are changing the setting. It is the clearest choice when you want every site to require an intentional action before starting media, subject to any administrator policy.
Choose Limit when compatibility matters
Select Limit when a site you use depends on autoplay or when Block is not offered by your Edge installation. Expect Edge to make site-by-site decisions using previous activity, so occasional automatic playback can remain.
Choose Allow only deliberately
Allow is appropriate when automatic media is part of your normal workflow and unexpected sound is not a concern. It removes the reduction that Limit provides.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting checklist
- The video is already playing: reload the page after changing Media autoplay; the permission change may not stop an existing player immediately.
- Only Limit appears: choose Limit, then check Edge version and whether a work or school policy is applied.
- The setting keeps reverting: ask the device administrator about the AutoplayAllowed policy.
- A video starts after another video ends: look for the service’s separate play-next or continuous-play control.
- A new tab or window opens: review pop-up permissions; Media autoplay does not block pop-ups.
- Sound comes from another application: use that application’s or Windows 11’s audio controls; Edge’s permission covers website media in Edge.
- One site behaves differently from another: Limit uses prior site behavior, so different sites can receive different autoplay treatment.
Key points to remember
- The control is under Cookies and site permissions > Media autoplay.
- Block is the strongest available choice; Limit is the fallback when Block is not exposed.
- Microsoft says Limit is Edge’s default and that Edge learns from online behavior.
- Media autoplay is separate from a video service’s next-video preference and from pop-up blocking.
- Browser version and organization policy can change which choices are available or effective.
