There is no universally correct percentage of stocks, bonds, and cash. The appropriate mix depends on a specific goal, when the money may be needed, how much loss you can financially withstand, and how much volatility you can stay invested through.
Start with the goal and its date, then match the portfolio’s potential growth, liquidity, and risk to that date. Use diversification within each asset class, account for fees, and set a deliberate review process rather than changing course because one category recently performed well.
What an allocation decision actually solves
Stocks, bonds, and cash do different jobs. Stocks provide the greatest long-term growth potential among these broad categories, but they can fall sharply over short periods. Bonds are generally less volatile than stocks and usually offer more modest returns, although risk varies widely by bond type. Cash and cash equivalents are useful for liquidity and near-term spending, but their lower expected return can allow inflation to reduce purchasing power.
Allocation is therefore a matching exercise, not a contest to identify one winning asset class. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) puts it plainly in its Beginner’s Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing: “The asset allocation decision is a personal one.” A portfolio that is sensible for a retirement goal decades away may be unsuitable for a house deposit due next year.

The three questions that determine the mix
- What is the goal? Name the purpose: retirement, education, an emergency reserve, a vehicle, a home purchase, or another identifiable use.
- When might you need the money? The expected date is your time horizon. A longer horizon may give volatile assets more time to recover; a short horizon leaves less time for that recovery.
- What loss can you handle? Consider both your financial ability to absorb a decline and your willingness to remain invested while values are down.
Stocks, bonds, and cash compared
| Asset class | General role | Return and volatility trade-off | Important caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stocks | Long-term growth and participation in business performance | Highest historical returns among the three broad categories, with the greatest historical risk and substantial short-term volatility | Losses can be large over short periods; past historical results do not guarantee future returns |
| Bonds | Potential income and a generally steadier component than stocks | Typically less volatile than stocks and offers more modest returns | Bond categories differ; high-yield bonds can carry materially higher risk |
| Cash and cash equivalents | Liquidity, spending needs, and emergency reserves | Very low investment-loss risk in general, but lower return potential | Inflation can erode purchasing power; a cash-like product is not automatically risk-free in every respect |
This table describes broad characteristics, not a recommended percentage mix. The SEC and Investor.gov do not establish one allocation that fits every investor.
Stocks: growth potential in exchange for volatility
A stock represents an ownership interest in a company. Across the three broad categories, the SEC describes stocks as having the greatest historical risk and highest historical returns. That combination makes stocks useful for goals that need substantial growth and have enough time to tolerate market declines.
The trade-off is visible when the money has a near-term deadline. A stock-heavy account can be worth considerably less when a tuition bill, home closing, or other payment arrives. Even a diversified stock fund can decline; diversification reduces the damage from one company or sector but does not remove market risk.
How to use stocks thoughtfully
- Use them for the portion of a long-horizon goal that can remain invested through substantial fluctuations.
- Check whether a fund is broad or narrowly focused. A fund concentrated in one industry, country, or theme may not provide the spread you expect.
- Review overlapping funds. Owning several funds does not guarantee diversification if they hold many of the same companies.
- Do not treat a strong recent stock-market period as evidence that your allocation should permanently become more aggressive.
Bonds: a steadier component, not a guarantee
Bonds are generally less volatile than stocks and tend to offer more modest returns. They can provide a counterweight to stock exposure and may be useful when a goal needs more stability but still has a horizon longer than an immediate cash need.
“Bonds” is not one uniform risk category. The SEC specifically notes that high-yield bonds can carry higher risk. A bond fund’s name alone is not enough to establish how much loss it can experience. Read the fund’s holdings and description, and understand that lower volatility than stocks does not mean no volatility.
Questions to ask about a bond holding
- What types of bonds does it own, and how concentrated is it?
- Could the fund’s risk be higher because it emphasizes lower-quality or high-yield debt?
- How does the holding fit with your other bond funds, stocks, and cash?
- What fees reduce the return you actually receive?
For a short-term obligation, replacing cash with a bond fund solely to seek a higher return can introduce a loss at the wrong time. The correct choice depends on the date of the obligation and your capacity to tolerate a decline.
Cash and cash equivalents: liquidity with an inflation cost
Cash and cash equivalents generally have very low investment-loss risk and are easy to access. Investor.gov identifies a savings account as one possible home for short-term goals or an emergency fund. That makes cash the natural starting point for money that must be available on demand or on a known near-term date.

The cost is lower growth potential. If the return on cash remains below inflation, the amount may buy less in the future even though the account balance does not fluctuate much. Cash can therefore be appropriate for a reserve or a near-term purchase while being a poor sole solution for a goal that requires growth over many years.
Separate liquidity from long-term investing
Identify the amount that must remain accessible before deciding how much of the remaining money can be exposed to market volatility. Keeping a liquidity reserve can help prevent a forced sale of stocks or bonds during a decline. The size and location of that reserve depend on your circumstances; the key is to match it to actual spending needs rather than an abstract target percentage.
Time horizon changes what risk means
Time horizon is the period until the money may be needed. A long horizon can permit more exposure to volatile assets because there may be time to recover from a decline. A short horizon calls for greater attention to stability because the date of withdrawal is close.
Near-term goals
For an emergency reserve or a purchase expected soon, liquidity and preservation of the amount needed usually matter more than pursuing the highest possible return. A savings account or another cash equivalent may fit this role. Avoid assuming that a short deadline can be extended if markets fall; plan around the date you actually expect to need the funds.

For a goal several years away, decide how much fluctuation the date can tolerate. Some investors may use a combination of cash and bonds, with any stock exposure sized so a market decline would not derail the payment. There is no universal dividing line between short and long term; the deadline and consequences of a shortfall are what matter.
Long-term goals
Retirement and other distant goals may have more capacity for stocks because growth can be important and temporary declines may be tolerable. As the spending date approaches, reassess how much volatility the remaining horizon can support and whether more of the required amount should be in steadier assets.
Risk tolerance has two parts: capacity and willingness
The SEC treats risk tolerance as both the ability and the willingness to lose money in exchange for potential return. These can point in different directions.

Risk capacity
Capacity is the financial ability to withstand a loss. A person with secure income, substantial savings outside the account, and a distant goal may be able to wait through a decline. Someone relying on the account for a payment due soon may not have that capacity, even if the person describes themselves as aggressive.

Risk willingness
Willingness is the emotional ability to stay invested. An investor may be financially able to tolerate a large decline but likely to sell in panic. That behavior can turn a temporary market loss into a permanent result. A less volatile mix that you can maintain is often more useful than a theoretically higher-return mix you abandon.
Resolve conflicts explicitly
When capacity and willingness disagree, let the goal’s deadline set the outer boundary: money needed soon cannot safely depend on a recovery that may not arrive in time. For the remainder, choose a level of volatility you can hold through normal market cycles and document why it fits.
A practical sequence for choosing your mix
- Write the goal in one sentence. State what the money is for and the amount you expect to need. “Retirement” is less actionable than “income beginning in a particular year.”
- Set the expected date. Use the earliest realistic date you might need the funds, not only an optimistic date. Mark whether the date is flexible or fixed.
- Assess capacity and willingness. Consider income stability, other reserves, the consequences of a shortfall, and how you would react to a substantial decline.
- Reserve liquidity. Identify money that must remain accessible for emergencies or near-term spending before allocating the rest for longer-term growth.
- Compare risk, return, diversification, and fees. Investor.gov lists these considerations, along with liquidity, when evaluating investment products. Read what each fund owns, how concentrated it is, and what it costs.
- Choose an implementation and a review rule. Decide whether you will use individual holdings, diversified funds or exchange-traded funds, or a target-date fund, then specify when and how you will review the mix.
Diversification is more than three percentages
Owning some stocks, some bonds, and some cash does not automatically create a diversified portfolio. Diversification should occur both among asset classes and within them. A narrow fund may leave you concentrated in one sector or geography, while several funds may overlap in the same underlying holdings.
Inspect the contents
- Read the fund’s objective, holdings, and concentration information.
- Check whether two funds own many of the same companies or bonds.
- Look at the combined portfolio, not each account in isolation, when the same investments appear in multiple accounts.
- Include cash held outside the investment account when judging how much liquidity you really have.
Funds and exchange-traded funds can make diversification easier, but the wrapper does not guarantee it. A fund marketed around a single theme can still be narrow.
Target-date funds: a simpler implementation for a dated goal
A target-date fund holds a mix of investments and typically shifts from a more stock-heavy allocation toward more bonds as the target year approaches. This can simplify maintenance for a retirement goal with a target year. The SEC’s target-date-fund bulletin is dated March 25, 2025; its guidance emphasizes that the glide path is personal and must fit the investor’s circumstances.
What to compare before choosing one
- Glide path: How does the stock, bond, and cash mix change before and after the target year?
- Holdings: What funds and securities are inside, and are they broad or concentrated?
- Fees: What ongoing costs reduce returns?
- Target date: Does the year reflect when withdrawals begin, when they end, or another assumption?
- Other investments: Will holdings in your other accounts duplicate the fund or make the combined portfolio more aggressive or conservative than intended?
Funds sharing a target year do not necessarily have identical allocations or outcomes. A target-date label is a starting point for comparison, not proof that the fund is suitable.

Rebalancing without chasing performance
Rebalancing brings the portfolio back toward the allocation you selected after market movements change its proportions. The SEC describes both periodic and threshold-based approaches. A periodic method reviews on a set schedule; a threshold method acts when an asset class moves a specified distance from its planned level.
Build a rule you can follow
- Record the intended mix and the reason it fits the goal.
- Choose a review interval or a threshold in advance.
- At review time, compare the current mix with the plan and account for contributions or withdrawals.
- Make only the changes needed to restore the intended risk level.
- Document the decision and reset the next review date.
Do not alter the mix simply because one category has recently performed best. That approach turns a long-term plan into a series of performance-chasing decisions.

How the choice changes by goal
| Goal situation | Primary question | Allocation emphasis to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency reserve | Can the money be accessed immediately without relying on market prices? | Cash or a cash equivalent suitable for the reserve’s purpose; growth is secondary to availability |
| Near-term purchase | What happens if the account falls shortly before the purchase date? | Lower-volatility holdings and enough liquidity to meet the known payment |
| Education or another dated expense | How fixed is the first withdrawal date, and are later withdrawals spread over time? | A mix that protects the earliest withdrawals while matching the longer schedule for later ones |
| Retirement or another distant goal | How much growth is needed, and when will withdrawals begin? | More capacity for stock exposure early, with a deliberate plan to adjust risk as the date approaches |
These are decision frameworks, not model portfolios. Your income, reserves, tax situation, account rules, and goal size can change the appropriate implementation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare investment options on six axes
When choosing between a fund, a target-date option, or a self-managed combination, compare the options on the same dimensions:
- Exposure: What proportion is in stocks, bonds, and cash, and how will that change over time?
- Risk and potential return: What size and duration of decline could the holdings experience?
- Liquidity: When can you access the money, and does that match the goal’s withdrawal date?
- Diversification: Are holdings broad, and do they overlap with investments you already own?
- Costs: What fees apply, and how do they affect the amount that remains invested?
- Maintenance: Who rebalances, how often, and under what rule?
A product that looks simple may shift responsibility to you through hidden concentration or a glide path you have not reviewed. A product with more moving parts may require ongoing decisions you are unlikely to make consistently.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using an age-based percentage as a complete answer
Age can be relevant, but it does not identify the goal date, required growth, other savings, or willingness to tolerate loss. Start with the specific goal and its consequences instead of applying a formula automatically.
Calling every bond “safe”
Bond risk varies, and high-yield bonds can carry higher risk. Read the holdings and do not substitute a bond fund for cash when a near-term obligation cannot tolerate a decline.

Keeping all long-term money in cash
Cash can protect a near-term reserve, but inflation may reduce its purchasing power over time. For a distant goal, evaluate whether the expected growth is sufficient rather than focusing only on avoiding day-to-day fluctuation.
Assuming several funds equal diversification
Funds can overlap substantially, and a narrow fund may be concentrated despite holding many securities. Check the combined holdings and exposure.
Changing the plan after a recent winner
Recent performance does not establish the right future allocation. Rebalance according to the rule you set, not according to headlines or a category’s latest return.

- Identify the cash needed for emergencies and near-term obligations.
- Write down the maximum decline that would threaten the goal and the decline you could stay invested through emotionally.
- Review every proposed fund or account for asset exposure, concentration, overlap, liquidity, and fees.
- Select a diversified approach that you understand and can maintain.
- Record a periodic or threshold-based rebalancing rule.
- Revisit the plan when the goal date, cash needs, income, or ability to tolerate loss changes—not merely when markets move.
