Geopolitical uncertainty does not produce a dependable “stocks down, bonds up” result. A shock can hurt equities, but bonds may rise, fall or move little depending on whether it mainly changes growth expectations, inflation, interest rates, credit risk, liquidity or currency values. The practical response is to balance portfolio roles and risks around your goals rather than trade headlines or assume that any bond is automatically defensive.

This is general educational information, not a personal allocation recommendation. The appropriate mix depends on your time horizon, planned withdrawals, liquidity needs, ability to tolerate losses and existing holdings. The evidence available does not establish one universally correct stock-to-bond percentage for geopolitical events.

Why geopolitical shocks do not create a simple stock-bond rule

“Geopolitical uncertainty” can describe very different economic events: a conflict that disrupts energy or food supplies, sanctions that restrict trade, a security crisis that damages confidence, or a diplomatic confrontation that ends without a major economic impact. Markets react to the expected economic channel, not to the label alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Four channels matter most:

  • Growth: weaker trade, investment or consumer confidence can reduce expected corporate earnings and support demand for assets perceived as less risky.
  • Inflation: supply disruptions, commodity-price spikes or shipping constraints can raise prices. Higher expected inflation can push market interest rates upward and reduce the value of existing fixed-rate bonds.
  • Interest-rate policy: investors revise expectations for central-bank decisions. A recessionary shock may lead markets to expect lower policy rates, while an inflationary shock may produce the opposite expectation.
  • Risk, liquidity and currency: investors may demand more compensation for holding risky securities, sell assets to raise cash, or move between currencies. Those flows can affect stocks and bonds at the same time.

Because these channels can operate in opposite directions, a geopolitical shock can produce a positive, negative or near-zero stock-bond correlation. A portfolio that worked during a growth scare may behave differently during an inflation shock.

What stocks and bonds are meant to do in a portfolio

Stocks represent claims on companies. Their long-run return potential comes from corporate earnings, dividends and economic growth, but their prices can fall sharply when investors mark down profits or demand a higher risk premium. Bonds represent contractual payments from an issuer. Their role may include income, liquidity and a source of returns that does not depend directly on equity earnings.

Portfolio role Stocks Bonds
Primary economic exposure Corporate profits, dividends and growth expectations Interest payments and repayment of principal, subject to issuer ability and market prices
Main sensitivity in a shock Earnings, valuation multiples, risk appetite and economic activity Interest rates, inflation expectations, credit spreads, maturity, liquidity and currency
Potential reason to hold Long-term growth and participation in business expansion Income, liquidity, diversification or a planned source of spending funds
Important failure mode Large drawdowns when profits or valuations fall Price losses when rates or inflation rise, or when credit and liquidity risks increase

The table describes roles, not guarantees. A high-quality government bond can lose market value when yields rise, and a stock can sometimes rise during a crisis if investors expect a favorable policy response or limited economic damage.

When bonds can diversify stocks—and when they may not

Low or moderate inflation can support traditional diversification

J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s historical analysis found that bonds were more effective diversifiers for U.S. equities during periods of low to moderate inflation. Its chart uses five-year rolling correlations between the S&P 500 and bond prices alongside U.S. Consumer Price Index data through June 30, 2019. The relationship changed across inflation regimes, and the paper did not find that stock-bond correlations were reliably negative during high-inflation periods. The data and conclusion are historical; they are not a live correlation reading or a forecast. Read the J.P. Morgan historical analysis.

A rate-cutting growth scare is only one possible pattern

If a shock is expected to weaken growth and reduce future inflation, investors may anticipate lower interest rates. Existing high-quality bonds can then gain value while stocks decline. This is the familiar diversification pattern, but it depends on the market’s rate expectations and on the bonds’ duration and credit quality.

An inflation shock can hurt both assets

If the shock raises inflation expectations, bond yields can rise rather than fall. Rising yields reduce the price of previously issued fixed-rate bonds, while stocks may also decline because input costs increase, profit margins narrow or valuation rates rise. State Street Global Advisors documented simultaneous losses in equities and government bonds in 2022, showing that traditional diversification can fail in a particular market regime. That observation does not mean every bond category performed identically. See the 2024 State Street discussion.

Correlation is an observation, not a promise

Correlation describes how two assets moved over a measured period. It does not explain why they moved together, and it cannot guarantee how they will move during the next crisis. A negative historical correlation can disappear when inflation, monetary policy, market liquidity or investor positioning changes.

What recent evidence says about a bond rally

The Bank for International Settlements’ September 2025 Quarterly Review reported that correlations between U.S. Treasuries and other safe assets or uncertainty gauges had approached zero after April 2025. The review also said that most non-U.S. investor selling of U.S. assets in April reversed in May and June, and that the evidence available at publication did not show material portfolio reallocation away from U.S. assets. It noted that any significant shift would likely be gradual. These are observations for that review period, not a forecast for the next geopolitical event. Read the BIS September 2025 review.

The implication is narrow but important: even when markets are focused on geopolitical uncertainty, Treasury prices do not have to move in a reliably opposite direction to stocks. Investors should treat “safe haven” as a conditional description of an asset’s behavior in a particular episode, not as an insurance contract.

Bond risks that matter during uncertainty

Maturity and duration

Longer-maturity bonds generally have greater price sensitivity to a given change in yields than shorter-maturity bonds. In a Reserve Bank of New Zealand-hosted study covering January 1, 1980, through December 31, 2010, researchers found larger cyclical price swings in longer-maturity bonds than in shorter-maturity bonds. The paper analyzed a global stock index, U.S. government bonds and gold from an international investor perspective, with assets denominated in U.S. dollars. Read the RBNZ-hosted study.

That study reported daily-return standard deviations of 0.5% for 10-year U.S. government bonds, 0.9% for the global stock index and 1.3% for gold in its 1980–2010 sample. These are historical sample statistics, not present-day expected volatility or a like-for-like guarantee. A bond’s maturity, coupon, yield and the way an investment vehicle manages maturities all affect the result.

Credit and issuer risk

A bond is a loan to an issuer, not a risk-free claim. Government, municipal, corporate and securitized bonds have different probabilities of delayed payment or default and different sensitivity to economic stress. In a geopolitical crisis, credit spreads can widen even if government yields fall. A bond fund can therefore lose value because of credit exposure, even when a high-quality government bond is gaining.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inflation risk

Fixed payments buy less when prices rise faster than expected. Inflation-linked securities can respond differently from nominal bonds, but their market prices still fluctuate and their protection depends on the instrument’s index, terms, maturity and issuer. Do not assume that any security described as inflation-sensitive will offset every inflation shock.

Supply, demand and market structure

The International Monetary Fund’s October 2024 Global Financial Stability Report discusses how interest-rate changes, quantitative tightening, Treasury supply and a changing buyer base for government bonds can affect longer-dated markets. It also highlights the interest-rate risk that accumulates over the life of longer-dated securities. These are risks the IMF discusses, not a current yield or price forecast. Read Chapter 1 of the IMF October 2024 report.

Currency exposure

A bond can rise in its local currency and still lose value for an investor whose spending currency falls against it. Foreign-currency exposure can add diversification, but it also adds another source of uncertainty. Whether currency exposure is useful depends on where you expect to spend money, the timing of those expenses and the rest of your holdings.

Liquidity and trading conditions

Quoted prices can become less reliable and transaction costs can rise when markets are stressed. A bond fund that normally appears stable may experience wider bid-ask spreads or larger price moves if investors sell at the same time. Liquidity needs should therefore be considered separately from a security’s historical volatility.

Why “safe haven” is conditional

The RBNZ-hosted study examined several crisis episodes and found that assets behaved differently from one episode to another. It explicitly described circumstances in which bonds or gold did not act as a safe haven over part of an event. The authors summarized the limitation this way:

“A safe haven cannot be a safe haven in the long-run or at all times.” — Baur and McDermott, in Safe Haven Assets and Investor Behaviour under Uncertainty (2012).

This is a research interpretation of the 1980–2010 sample, not a promise about future protection. It is also why a portfolio should be evaluated by the job each holding is expected to perform rather than by labels such as “defensive” or “safe.”

A framework for comparing stock and bond exposures

Before changing an allocation, evaluate the following questions. They help identify which risk you are trying to manage without pretending to predict the geopolitical event.

1. What is the money for?

Long-term spending needs may tolerate temporary market losses that cannot be accepted for a withdrawal due next year. Separate money needed for near-term expenses from money intended for long-term growth. A holding that is appropriate for growth may be inappropriate for a known short-term liability, regardless of its historical return.

2. What is the time horizon?

Longer horizons provide more time to recover from a drawdown, but they do not eliminate the risk of having to sell during one. Match the maturity and liquidity of fixed-income holdings to the dates when cash may be needed rather than choosing maturity solely from a recent market narrative.

3. Which bond risks are you actually accepting?

Specify the exposure instead of saying only “bonds.” Record issuer or credit quality, maturity or duration, currency, inflation sensitivity, concentration and liquidity. Two bond funds can respond very differently to the same shock because those characteristics differ.

4. How does the bond exposure interact with existing stocks?

Look through funds and accounts to identify overlapping issuers, sectors, countries and currencies. A portfolio concentrated in one country’s equities may not be well diversified by adding bonds from the same issuer or by adding foreign assets with an unrecognized currency concentration.

5. How much loss can the plan withstand?

Risk tolerance is an emotional response to losses; risk capacity is the financial ability to absorb them without abandoning a plan. Both matter. A theoretically diversified mix can still be unsuitable if a temporary decline would force a sale or cause a change in spending.

Comparison axis Questions to answer Why it matters in a geopolitical shock
Purpose Is the holding for growth, income, liquidity, diversification or a known liability? Different purposes imply different acceptable volatility and time horizons.
Growth and inflation channel Could the event primarily weaken demand, raise prices, or do both? Growth and inflation shocks can push stocks and bonds in different directions.
Issuer and credit quality Who owes the payments, and how might its finances respond to stress? Credit spreads can widen even when high-quality government yields fall.
Maturity or duration How sensitive is the price to a change in yields? Longer exposure usually has greater rate sensitivity and can be more volatile.
Inflation sensitivity Are payments fixed, indexed or otherwise exposed to purchasing-power loss? Unexpected inflation can reduce real returns and pressure nominal bond prices.
Currency In which currency will the investment and future spending be measured? Exchange-rate moves can dominate the local-currency return.
Liquidity Can the position be sold at a reasonable cost when markets are stressed? Cash needs can turn a temporary price move into a permanent loss.
Existing concentration What countries, sectors, issuers and risk factors are already present? A new holding may duplicate rather than diversify current exposure.

How to assess common bond categories without treating any as a guarantee

Shorter-maturity, high-quality bonds

Shorter maturities generally have less price sensitivity to interest-rate changes than longer maturities. They may therefore be useful when the priority is liquidity or limiting duration risk, although their income and reinvestment outcomes change as rates move. They are not immune to inflation, credit or liquidity risk.

Longer-maturity government bonds

Longer government bonds can provide stronger diversification when a growth shock leads to falling yields, but they can also experience larger losses when inflation expectations or yields rise. Their usefulness depends on the shock and on the investor’s ability to hold through price volatility.

Investment-grade corporate bonds

These combine interest-rate exposure with corporate credit exposure. A recession, sanctions or a financing disruption can widen spreads and lower prices even if government yields decline. Evaluate the issuer mix, sector concentration and maturity rather than assuming the investment-grade label removes risk.

Inflation-linked bonds

These are designed to adjust specified payments or principal using an inflation index, subject to the instrument’s rules. They can address a different risk from nominal bonds, but market prices still move with real yields, liquidity and expectations. They are not a universal hedge for commodity, currency or geopolitical losses.

Foreign bonds

Foreign bonds add exposure to another country’s rates, credit conditions and currency. That may diversify a home-market portfolio, or it may introduce a new concentration. Decide whether the currency exposure is intentional and compatible with future spending needs.

A step-by-step process for building a more resilient policy

  1. Write the objective. State whether the relevant goal is long-term growth, funding a near-term withdrawal, reducing drawdown risk, maintaining liquidity or preserving purchasing power.
  2. Map current exposures. List stocks and bonds by country, sector, issuer, credit quality, maturity or duration, currency and account. Include indirect exposure through pooled investments.
  3. Separate time buckets. Identify cash and high-liquidity assets for planned expenses, then evaluate longer-term investments separately. Do not rely on a volatile asset to fund a date-certain payment.
  4. Test more than one shock channel. Consider a growth-led sell-off, an inflation-led rate rise, a credit event and a liquidity shock. The purpose is to expose sensitivities, not to assign probabilities to a particular conflict.
  5. Choose permissible ranges in advance. A written investment policy can specify acceptable exposure ranges, liquidity requirements, quality limits and when a review is allowed. It should be based on the plan, not on a headline.
  6. Check implementation costs and taxes. Trading spreads, fund expenses, taxes and account restrictions can change the result. A theoretically attractive adjustment may be impractical if it creates avoidable costs or a cash shortfall.
  7. Document the reason for each holding. If a bond is intended to provide liquidity, say so. If it is intended to diversify equity risk, identify the specific conditions under which that might occur and the conditions under which it could fail.
  8. Review on a schedule. Reassess when goals, withdrawals, income, risk capacity or existing concentrations change. Avoid making the review itself a forecast of the next market move.

Scenario matrix: matching risks to questions

Hypothetical shock channel Possible market pressure Questions for the portfolio owner
Demand and growth deteriorate Equity earnings expectations may fall; investors may revise rate expectations lower. Would high-quality bonds with suitable maturity provide useful diversification, and can the investor hold them without selling early?
Energy or supply disruption raises inflation Inflation expectations and yields may rise; nominal bonds and stocks can both come under pressure. How much nominal duration and purchasing-power risk is acceptable? Are inflation-sensitive assets being used for a defined purpose?
Corporate or sovereign credit stress Credit spreads may widen and lower-quality bonds may fall with equities. What proportion of the bond exposure depends on corporate or lower-quality issuers, and how liquid is it?
Flight to cash or market liquidity deteriorates Prices can gap and transaction costs can increase across asset classes. Are near-term obligations funded without forced sales, and are liquidity assumptions realistic under stress?
Currency repricing Foreign assets can gain or lose in the investor’s spending currency independently of local returns. Is the currency exposure deliberate, and does it match future liabilities?

These scenarios are analytical lenses, not predictions. A real event can move through several channels at once, and the dominant channel can change as policy and market expectations evolve.

Rebalancing without turning headlines into a trading system

Rebalancing means returning a portfolio toward a previously chosen policy after market movements change its exposures. The reviewed evidence does not establish a universally correct calendar, threshold or stock-bond ratio for geopolitical uncertainty. A sensible policy links any rebalancing action to the investor’s objectives, ranges, cash needs and risk capacity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the mix solely because a conflict appears likely can create timing risk. Markets may move before the news is widely reported, reverse after an initial reaction or respond more to inflation and policy consequences than to the event itself. If the plan changes, record the durable reason—such as a shorter time horizon or a new withdrawal need—rather than presenting a tactical reaction as a guaranteed protection strategy.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every bond is defensive: maturity, issuer, credit quality, inflation exposure and currency all change behavior.
  • Using a historical correlation as a promise: a relationship measured through 2019 or observed in 2025 does not determine the next episode.
  • Ignoring inflation: a nominal bond can lose purchasing power and market value when prices and yields rise.
  • Confusing low volatility with liquidity: an asset that usually moves little may still be costly to sell during stress.
  • Concentrating in one “safe” issuer or country: diversification within both stocks and bonds matters.
  • Changing allocations without checking cash needs: a forced sale during a drawdown can turn a temporary decline into a realized loss.
  • Believing a label is a hedge: “safe haven,” “income,” and “inflation protection” describe intended characteristics, not guaranteed outcomes.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

The historical record is useful for identifying conditions and trade-offs, but it has clear boundaries. The RBNZ study covers 1980–2010; the J.P. Morgan analysis uses historical data through 2019; the IMF report was published in October 2024; and the BIS observation comes from its September 2025 review. None provides an up-to-the-minute correlation series, a forecast for a particular conflict or an investor-specific allocation.

Those limitations do not make the evidence irrelevant. They show how to use it: ask which economic channel is in play, identify the exact risks in each holding, match liquidity to liabilities and judge diversification over a complete plan rather than a single headline or crisis chart.

Bottom line

Stocks and bonds can complement one another, but geopolitical uncertainty alone does not tell you how either will perform. Build the portfolio around goals, time horizon, liquidity, risk capacity, issuer quality, maturity, inflation sensitivity, currency and existing concentrations. Treat diversification as conditional, avoid assuming a bond rally, and use a written rebalancing policy instead of trying to forecast every geopolitical development.
